Radio Wires (Feb 5, 2011)Los Angeles Times: Thanks to a record-breaking regular season for viewership and ubiquitous parties this weekend, the National Football League's signature event is poised to become the most watched television program in American history as a pair of evenly matched, old-school teams prepare to battle for the championship. Gary Lycan: "Hanging out with friends" is how Ryan Fox describes his role as the new morning personality on "Go Country" KKGO 105.1 FM. He starts Monday (Feb. 7) with Ashley Paige as his sidekick from 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays + Jamie Gwen, the popular chef with her own show Sunday mornings on KFWB 980 AM, got the call last weekend to go to snowy New York City to be on the Sirius XM Martha Stewart Living Radio - Sirius 112 and XM 157. Other Wires (Feb 5, 2011)RAIN 2/4: Verizon iPhone pre-order sells-out, breaks company records. Yesterday, Verizon began pre-orders for the iPhone 4 -- previously exclusive to AT&T in the U.S. Hours later, pre-orders had sold out and broke launch-day records at Verizon. The pre-orders were only available to current Verizon subscribers. This should all be welcome news to webcasters. The iPhone arguably ushered in the age of mobile Internet radio and many of those upgrading are surely ditching "last-generation" devices running on platforms relatively unfriendly to apps. RAIN 2/3: "Blackberry Radio" app shows off platform's radio options. "BlackBerry Radio" -- a new app from BlackBerry-makers RIM -- aims to spotlight the Internet radio apps available for the smartphone platform. The app includes streams from Slacker, Clear Channel, Corus and others. RIM says it isn't trying to replace other Internet radio apps, only help users discover them. Sports Wires (Feb 4, 2011)Tom Taylor radio-info: The Dallas Cowboys give nationwide radio rights to Compass, in a five-year deal. It's a deal with "the #1 brand in the NFL", Peter Kosann tells TRI - "this will capture a lot of peoples' imagination" because of the national profile of "America's Team." Owner Jerry Jones' crew will still operate its own regional network in 65 markets, but Peter Kosann-run Compass Media Networks will produce and market the pre-season and regular season Cowboys games for the rest of the country. This builds on the business model Kosann is already using with the NFL Oakland Raiders, though in that case he's pretty much doing everything, from local to national. Now Compass can add the Cowboys, the team that's the clear leader in branding (and website visits) among all the NFL teams. Dial Global is again in the picture with Compass, through its role as the national sales rep for Compass. Dial Global tells TRI that it's hiring Greg Leader as "Vice President of Sports/Affiliate Relations", to collaborate with Compass. Greg's worked at both Sports USA and Westwood One. (Kosann is a former CEO of Westwood.) Beyond the Raiders and the Cowboys, Compass will have more NFL games this coming season, thanks to deals struck with individual teams. It's also fielding a lineup of college football - with details on both levels of pigskin action TBA. John Maffei: TV/Radio Sports: Broadcasters, players know it's not just another Sunday. Broadcasters, Troy Aikman says, are no different than players. Other Wires (Feb 4, 2011)Free Fights on TJ TV? (Feb 3, 2011)When I hear those paid ads for pay per view fights on Cox cable, I just can't help but to turn to my TV set hooked by an antenna, aim it towards Tijuana, and see if I can get those fights (though with Spanish language announcers dubbing over an English language feed from HBO or Showtime) on one of the channels.TV Azteca 13 affilliate on analog channel 27 or digital channel 28.1 features a weekly bout called "Box Azteca". It usually runs early Saturday nights. Just the other day, I caught a glimpse of a boxing bout on a low power channel 7 from near Poway. It was on an early Friday night. Glad to see some kind of boxing on free per view once again with English language announcers.
Watch The Super Bowl on Analog TV (Feb 3, 2011)The catch? You have to be near a Mexican-owned TV station.San Diego is one of the cities that's close enough to Tijuana so that everybody who still has an analog TV set can still watch the Super Bowl. XEWT channel 12 (or digital channel 32.1) is offering the game in Spanish. Even if you still have an analog TV, just tune in to XEWT 12 to see the game. If you prefer to hear it in English, turn on your radio to 1090 or 1700 to hear the Westwood One announcers for the Super Bowl.
Radio Wires (Feb 3, 2011)Tom Taylor: A smiling Rick Dees reaches a major deal with Westwood One, giving him a new weekday show. "Daily Dees" may well wind up competing in some markets against Premiere's "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" - that is, against the guy who replaced Rick on Clear Channel's CHR KIIS-FM in Los Angeles. Westwood One EVP of Affiliate Sales Dennis Green says "Daily Dees is a long-form show designed for midday or afternoons", with all kinds of elements. Affiliates can "build the show" around Rick's content including drops and "talk-ups to songs and artists." Here's the business model - Westwood's not asking for any network inventory in the show itself. Stations need to barter only three minutes a day, Monday-Sunday, between 5am and 8pm. Green says "this is the first time as far as I know that any syndicator is offering a show without the inventory in the product." He says the result is "unprecedented local market sales options" and the chance to build the Dees brand for the local station. But Rick's deal with Westwood is broader than "Daily Dees" -Major radio advertiser H&R Block is sued by rival Jackson Hewitt Tax Services. When we say "major", Media Monitors counted H&R Block running 39,056 radio spots in the most recent week. That's compared to the category's #2 advertiser, Jackson Hewitt at 4,188. Jackson Hewitt filed suit in Manhattan alleging that its rival is using "several literally false, misleading and highly disparaging advertising claims." It even alleges that H&R Block left damaging marketing material inside Jackson Hewitt offices. Jackson Hewitt is asking for an emergency injunction during the height of the tax-prep season - which could be hurtful to radio if H&R Block pulls back. Or - maybe a positive if H&R Block needs to modify its message and get it out there fast. Randy Dotinga: I heard the news today (in a song) . Los Angeles Times: It's been nearly a decade since his last regular program on KCRW-FM, where Joe Frank created a sensation with strange, tragic-comic dramas that sounded like nothing else on radio. Today, Frank still has a lot to say. He's doing it on Facebook, where he has 3,600 friends, and in occasional one-man shows. Other Wires (Feb 3, 2011)The White Stripes Calls It Quits. Legal (Feb 2, 2011)Yes, we can say "Super Bowl" as in watch the Super Bowl this Sunday on Fox-TV and hear it on Westwood One radio, as a news organization (of one person), but we can't use it in selling products unless we pay a rights fee to the NFL for use of its trademarked phrase and logo. There is a business in La Mesa that is calling itself "Super Bowl", and I often see it advertised on "Get 1 Free" magazine. I don't think this is legal.
Duran Duran "All You Need is Now" (Feb 2, 2011)Feels like the fall of 1983 ("Seven and the Ragged Tiger") once again with this new song. Rodney on the Roq played it a few weeks ago. 91X is finally playing it.
And for old time's sake, this one from that year.

Radio Wires (Feb 2, 2011)All Access News: WESTWOOD ONE has announced a partnership with DEES ENTERTAINMENT to add a brand new suite of RICK DEES shows to its roster of programming, including: THE DAILY DEES, RICK DEES 80s AT 8, RICK DEES 90s AT 9, WEEKLY TOP 40 (archives) and THE TEEN TOP 20 WITH KEVIN DEES. RAIN 2/1: Canadian ISP sets monthly usage limit, but cap shouldn't cramp online listening. Some Canadian Internet subscribers will soon be hit with a 25GB per month data cap, with additional data priced at around $2 per GB. If this sets a trend -- if other ISPs in Canada and elsewhere follow suit -- some may expect Internet radio to suffer. But would Net radio listening actually be affected? Probably not, if you just look at the numbers. But imposing data caps may make Internet subscribers apprehensive about using anything but the "bare necessities" online. "You need to listen every day and see how I come down on every issue," he straightforwardly suggests. "When someone is wrong and when I disagree about something or someone, I'm going to be honest. We bring a different aura in presentation, delivery and ideology of a conservative radio show."
Today's Kids on 70s and 80s Technology (Feb 1, 2011)Radio Wires (Feb 1, 2011)Mel Phillips: The FCC doesn't regulate satellite radio, yet they are going public on Sirius XM subscription rate increases, which the satcaster has in mind. Cumulus Media Inc. to acquire its big-market sister, Cumulus Media Partners. Privately-held CMP is the former Susquehanna Radio, and it has been managed since 2006 by publicly-held Cumulus Media Inc. - which also owns 25% of its equity. Its three partners in CMP are the private equity groups Blackstone, Bain Capital and Thomas H. Lee Partners. The just-announced deal has Lew Dickey-run Cumulus Media Inc. buying them out using its own stock. Blackstone gets shares of Cumulus ("CMLS"). But since Bain and Thomas H. Lee Partners have attributable interests in Clear Channel, they'll get shares of a new class of Cumulus non-voting stock. The deal values CMP at $740 million and Cumulus Media is issuing 9,945,714 shares of its own stock to pull it off. Cumulus says the price works out to 7.8 times cash flow.
