First Morgan, now I was given another ticket to Wonderland. New guy, new approach and new respect. Steele wasn't at all like Morgan. But he too, had it put together in a way I could never have imagined and made the whole thing work like magic" + Tom Murphy: "Robert W. Morgan used to say that Don Steele could do more with a grunt than most of the rest of us could do in five minutes. I took offense at that because I could grunt, too. But Don did things so quickly. In two seconds he would slide in so much". All Access: Is A Performance Fee An Inevitable Reality? Meet The San Diego Chargers Radio Network Team! Minneapolis Star Tribune: An Associated Press-Univision poll finds many U.S. Hispanics who mainly speak English are turning to Spanish-language TV and radio. The main appeal: sports and entertainment, a cultural connection and a nagging feeling among some Latinos that English-language media portray them negatively. Robert Feder: Nearly 50 years after Dick Biondi first sang "The Pizza Song" - better known as "On Top of a Pizza" - the hit novelty record has been released on CD for the first time. The song, written as a parody to "On Top of Old Smokey" and recorded by Biondi in 1961, became an instant success, selling more than 11,000 copies and helping establish the skinny young disc jockey on WLS-AM (890) as the undisputed nighttime star of rock 'n' roll radio in Chicago. Radio In Sights: Is Radio Dying, Growing, or What? You've seen the comments by new media pundits and radio critics: Radio's dead - No one listens to radio - Everybody knows that the iPod/Satellite/Internet/iPhone/whatever killed radio - Why would anyone still be listening to radio? And on and on. There's blood in the water, and anybody who has an agenda, anyone who has something to sell to "solve" radio's problems thinks now's the time to take their shot. Now and Then: Yearly Trends Show Radio's Condition As Stable -- Radio is in ICU but the condition of the medium is not on life support or even critical, it's stable, according to a year-to-year comparison of different ratings companies. Harker Research came up with the idea of comparing one year trends in PPM markets, Arbitron diary markets and with recent Nielsen numbers. It's Official: 91X Hires Oz Mediana For Mornings. He Returns To 91X To Host Music In The Morning. OZ previously was at 91X as MD/on-air from 1987-1993. Tom Taylor of radio-info: Only 86 FM stations have hiked IBOC/HD Radio power levels in the three months it's been allowed. The reality is, a lot of broadcasters want it and think they need a more robust signal to be heard on car and home receivers. But (speculates the NAB Tech Check newsletter) raising power now would require more "cap-ex" - capital expenditure on equipment, and coming off a year when radio's revenue dropped an RAB-estimated 18%, budgets are super-tight. iBiquity understands that reality. The FCC approved the higher levels in January and began letting stations file for them on May 10. Now three months later, the NAB's Tech Check does a census of stations and finds 51 commercial and 35 non-commercial stations running with greater power. Only six of the 86 have hiked digital power to the maximum. Originally, the Commission allowed the In-band, on-channel HD Radio signal to run at just 1% of the analog power, and that's where the vast majority are today. iBiquity figures about 2,078 stations have converted to its digital audio broadcasting system, counting both AMs and FMs. Only the FM stations are being allowed to raise power. Kurt Hanson: RAIN 8/12: KPIG says their subscription-only, commercial-free streaming is profitable. Freedom, CA-based Adult Alternative KPIG-FM in March shut down its free, ad-supported streams, saying the amount of listening plus record industry royalty fees made the free streams cost-prohibitive. Rather, listeners would have to pay a $5/month subscription fee to hear the station (albeit commercial-free). Mapleton Communications, which owns KPIG, tells Inside Radio the move has been a great success so far. "We went from not making money to being profitable in 60 days," the news source quotes CEO Adam Nathanson. Radio World: California FM Interference Dispute in Holding Pattern. KATY(FM)'s complaint about alleged IBOC interference to its analog signal from KRTH(FM) is in a holding pattern due to the death of KATY consulting engineer Elliott Klein. NY Daily News: After insisting for some eight decades that artists were fairly compensated for radio play by the promotional value of that airtime, the radio industry may be on the verge of an about-face . Robert Feder: For the last word on the National Radio Hall of Fame, let us bow to the King of All Media, Howard Stern, who was snubbed for the fourth time last week by the Chicago-based broadcast shrine. Although he consistently urged his fans not to vote for him, Stern blasted the outcome anyway on his Sirius XM show Monday. Saying "everybody else sucks," he called it "almost ludicrous" that he lost in the national/active category to retired NPR news anchor (and Chicago Public Media luminary) Carl Kasell. New Jersey News Room: Alex Rodriguez and Rush Limbaugh are faring far better than Tom Hicks and Red McCombs these days -- Talk radio on the AM dial has been a savior for some radio stations that could not compete with the FM dial and then satellite radio. ESPN's San Diego affiliate, XHMORE at 98.9, says "Adios." I'm stealing the headline thought of San Diego Union-Tribune writer Jay Posner, who wryly says the station "probably set some kind of radio record for lack of promotion during most of the past eight years." It also never added much if any local content, which the folks in Bristol prefer. The cancellation by Mexican owner MEC Communications is effective at the end of this month and as Posner says, it leaves ESPN scrounging for affiliate. ESPN's Dan Quinn says an interim hope is to persuade XHMORE to keep the lineup going a bit longer. But the extra-short notice makes you wonder what MEC wants to do with the Tijuana-licensed Class B signal. Still unclear - what happens to ESPN Deportes - XESPN at 800. Inside Radio: Terrestrial attracts more listeners online. With help from the World Cup, radio had more online listeners in June. It was the first time terrestrial operators added online listeners in three months. But the biggest growth comes among the web pureplays who now comprise one-quarter of the top 20 broadcasters. Multichannel News: Can Cable TV Cut Down on Kilowatts? Excerpts: As TV viewers watch efforts to go green on the screen, cable operators are starting to make strides to cut their own use of energy. Delivering TV signals is enormously energy-intensive. Electricity is one of the largest operating costs for cable-system operators across the U.S. As a whole, the cable industry can recover an estimated $100 million to $200 million per year in electricity costs just by consuming energy more efficiently. And that's before pursuing sustainable energy options. Like many other industries, the pursuit of sustainable energy in cable is somewhere between "turn off the lights when you leave" and full-on sustainability measures - solar panels, wind turbines, the works. The commitment is there; the timing is early. "Consumers expect us to be more efficient, inside our house, and inside theirs," said Stephen Pagano, executive vice president of special projects for Time Warner Cable. In case you haven't noticed, "green" is no longer even vaguely synonymous with tree-hugging, tie-dye and recycled cereal boxes. Fortune 75 companies have "chief sustainability officers"; Wal-Mart is planning for 100% renewable energy. It's big business everywhere. Cable's energy usage is spread across four segments: The home (set-tops, cable modems); the plant (amplifiers, power supplies); the headend (servers and more servers); and the fleet. A look at the state-of- the-state of "cable and green" follows. Read the full story at the link. Las Vegas Journal: Radio stations adjust to new technology, competition - Listeners tune in, tune out or turn off -- "We're running less commercials," said Tony Bonnici, vice president/general manager of Las Vegas-based Lotus Broadcasting, which owns six stations, including KOMP, KXPT-FM, 97.1 and KBAD-AM, 920. "We went from running 30s and 60s (seconds) to more 10s and 15s. People once ran 18 minutes of commercials an hour. Now it's 12 and 10. Our worst enemy is ourselves, when we get greedy and add more clutter. Listeners will compromise to a degree, but when we ask too much of them, they go away". WS Radio: GM Paul Menard says that SignonSanDiego.com hopes to build out to over 50 shows in the coming months with local programming via the new "Internet Air Waves" - The shows are promoted by The San Diego Union-Tribune and SignonSanDiego.com. Multichannel News: Pay TV Piracy Avoiding Actionable Neglect (Or Worse) Stop Radio Monopolies group on Facebook: There’s a Facebook page to “stop radio monopolies”, started by L.A. owner Saul Levine. Saul is incensed by Clear Channel’s comments in an FCC rulemaking suggesting that it and others be allowed to own more than the current eight stations in a market the size of Los Angeles. He was quoted on LARadio.com calling that a potential “disaster that will destroy what is left of the broadcast industry.” Levine, who owns "Go Country" KKGO, urges the FCC to go the other way and reduce both the caps and the “sub-caps” that specify how many AMs and how many FMs you can own in a particular market. (In L.A., no more than five AMs or five FMs). Tom Taylor radio-info: A $12 million sale of a Southern California AM began with a time brokerage deal. Media broker Mark Jorgenson handled the deal for seller Salem Communications, and he says Korean Gospel Broadcasting has been buying time on KXMX, Anaheim (1190) since 1991. Now it's filing to buy the facility outright for $12 million. KXMX runs 20,000 watts daytime and 1,300 watts at night, both directional. It covers most of the L.A. market in the daytime and Orange County by night. Korean Gospel is apparently borrowing most of the money from a senior lender, and yet Salem retains a security interest “in all assets securing the senior debt." But not the license, which can't be held as security. Korean Gospel also agrees to pay Salem $1 million in a three-year seller note. Chargers Season 2010All times Pacific.
