The Fourth of July is still two weeks away, but this weekend has an All-American TV feel to it. Jay Posner TV/Radio: London calling: Enberg taking hiatus for Wimbledon. The timing figured to be just about perfect. The Padres would be terrible and Dick Enberg would welcome the break as he headed off today to enjoy that little tennis event known as Wimbledon Who Da Guy Hawaii: 93 KHJ: Inside Boss Radio - Excerpt # 5: I had to see this. Steele sat in the drab announce booth, chain smoking, his monitor turned up above normal human range. The announce booth contained a funky mike, VU meter, earphone-jack plug and one switch. Period. I'd had a Plexiglas bulletin-board-type thing made, and the jocks faced that. 5x7 inch cards were plastered all over that. The news announce booth was off to the right, about the size of a modest aquarium, and the engineer was 90 degrees to port. I stood behind crew-cut Ken Orchard, the board operator on duty. Orchard recalls, "There was a natural high you could feel throughout the building. Everyone was charged up." The final "Cavalcade of Hits" song was fading. 3:00 p.m. "BOOM ... Ladies and gentlemen, presenting The Real Don Steele Show ... with a Sneak Preview of the all new Boss Radio, on ... KHJ, Los Angeles." The Motown sound crashes in over the fading tympani. Steele jumps on in, "It's 3 o'clock in Los Angeles!" Multichannel News: FCC Votes 3-2 To Launch Broadband Transmission Classification Inquiry. Now and Then: It's The Music That Drives Online & Mobile Listening -- For those who believe that music is dead, put the black clothes back in the closet. There will not be a funeral today. Naysayers have been trying to bury the music of today by failing to see that the old methods of exposing and selling music moved to a new address. SDNN: Eight ways to spend $8 or less at the San Diego Fair FCC releases new spectrum. Looking to alleviate some of the growing spectrum shortage crisis, the FCC has announced a plan to open new spectrum for mobile broadband development. The Commission's goal is to make 500 MHz of new spectrum available for Wi-Fi services by 2020. That includes a plan to get TV stations to voluntarily return some of what they're using. Multichannel News: 'Hot in Cleveland' Sizzles For TV Land. TV Land's first original scripted series Hot In Cleveland sizzled in its debut, setting a network ratings record. Radio World: I Remember the Power of Nighttime Radio. Prompted by our recent article on AM DXing, RW's resident history expert and radio lover James O'Neal offers an essay about the joys of a certain kind of listening experience. Bill Pugh is out as Clear Channel's ops manager for San Diego, about two years into the job. His major-market experience includes being the PD of Sporting News Radio, and of course he has a family interest in sports - Dan Patrick (Pugh) is his young brother. The San Diego Board of Radio-Info.com is talking about the cut now Ratings, Schmatings (June 18, 2010)The Walrus 105.7 takes third place. Magic 92.5 takes fifth. Z90 takes sixth.KYXY is doing the impossible: falling out of the top eight and landing at number nine. Are people finally tired of hearing "Unbreak My Heart" everyday? Smooth Jazz 98.1 is at number 10, also doing a fall. KSON 97.3 is at number 11. KGB continues to loose listeners and is at number 15, proving that it was Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw that propped up the ratings for the station for the longest time. With an inept music director and programmer, and the worst imaging of any station in town, KGB can no longer rely on what really hasn't been working for decades. Jack FM is at number 13. The station's playlist is reminiscent of the waning days of KPRI with no variety outside of classic and modern rock like what Walrus is doing today. 91X and KPRI are proving to be non competetive in their formats. KPRI can relax knowing that KUSS-FM is the lowest rated San Diego FM station in town. The popularity of the Los Angeles Lakers is helping KLSD from being a complete Blutarski, but the sports talk format remains unwanted and unpopular. XMOR does a tad worse with its ESPN Radio format.

That's due to nearly $50 million in projected performance royalty payments. Robertson writes, "Pandora must devise a way to lower this royalty amount if they're to build a long standing profitable company." Multichannel News: CBS Wants Its Retrans Cake. The CBS broadcast network, poised to reap about $100 million in retransmission-consent revenue in 2010, is expected to more than double that take in the coming years as its fees from distributors rise and as it captures 50% or more of those funds from its affiliate stations, chief financial officer Joseph Ianiello said at an industry conference Wednesday Gary Lycan: Bob Barker may have retired from "The Price Is Right" in 2007, but he continues to be a strong advocate for animals. I understand televisions cost much more than an iPhone but radios do not. Even the recent history of HD radio - did they sell 600,000 HD radios in all? Or satellite radio - without the car radio install - how many satellite radios would capture the imagination and wallets of entertainment consumers? That's how big the portable Internet is becoming because I'm sure you'll agree these phones are not flying off the shelves because they only make phone calls on the AT&T network All Access: It's another lawsuit for Limewire. Cox said Tuesday it has hired Fox Networks to negotiate licensing fees for Channel 4 with AT&T's U-Verse and the satellite TV providers, which have long complained that Cox's exclusive rights to Padres games hamstring their ability to attract subscribers in San Diego County. Cox said the entire channel, which includes the programs "Sam the Cooking Guy" and "San Diego Insider," will be licensed to the competing TV providers. Read the rest at the link. "I am going to get rid of my colo soon. It's on old hardware and costs too much. If anyone feels strongly enough about keeping this board alive to provide a new home, I'll be more than happy to work with you and get that done. Otherwise... "If there's interest in and progress towards keeping it alive, I will not kill it. If there is no real interest, I'll say July 31st is the last day you can expect to see it around. And if there' s no interest at all, it might well disappear before then and save myself another month of hosting costs. "Please feel free to email me with questions or ideas. I'll start a thread in Suggestions in case anyone wants to discuss publicly.

Who Da Guy Hawaii: 93 KHJ: Inside Boss Radio - Excerpt # 4: The TV and office employees looked down their noses at us. We were just the latest in the KHJ Radio Format-of-The-Month Club. It was obvious there'd be little support from our fellow RKO broadcasters. We would rely on our own small Boss group, and our collective desire to do or die. The day began with a promo jingle recording session at a small studio a few blocks away, down Melrose Avenue. By noon, hysteria swept through the radio section of the building. New KHJ deejay Roger Christian, formerly of KFWB, was the co-writer of the Beach Boys' hit, "Little Deuce Coupe." Roger and Brian Wilson let us use the track to overdub our new "Boss Jock" deejay lineup. So the jocks, none of whom could sing a note, were down the street in a sound booth talking in rhythm to the song's beat (read Excerpt # 4 - 93 KHJ: Inside Boss Radio). USA Today: Starbucks will begin offering unlimited free Wi-Fi at all of its company-operated U.S. locations next month. Inside Music Media: What does it say about a music industry that can't sell CDs, doesn't want to allow consumers to cherry pick tunes even if they pay for them and refuses to fuel the viral growth of music by allowing file sharing? How about - dead business. Now - and sit down for this - Tom Petty and Live Nation are turning to Tribune, the publishing and TV station owner currently in bankruptcy to help them sell concert tickets. You see, giving away free downloads is an extra when the end game is actually selling out the venue. What does that say about the value of music? Cleveland Plain Dealer: Recording artists and radio stations fight over royalties, air play and spin. Tommy Kramer: RadioÆs getting too generic, and people are settling for the ôwell everybody can identify with thisö reasoning far too much. If it can be done on any day, then itÆs not really about today. That makes it NOT topical. We donÆt want to be just an audio magazine, with random articles ôof interestö to people. Mel Phillips: FCC Commissioner Brings Back An Old Refrain -- FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn floated what sounded like a new idea when she spoke at the 35th Annual Community Radio Conference in Minnesota last week, but was it?
