Tijuana Returns to Daylight Time Sunday (Apr 3, 2010)

For the readers in Baja California, it's time to move your clocks forward one hour Sunday morning at 2am, which is when Mexico observes Daylight Saving Time.

This Sunday, Tijuana, BCN, and the rest of Mexico except Sonora, will be moving their clocks ahead one hour to join San Diego and the U.S. in observing Daylight Saving time.

Mexico still uses the U.S. 1987 Daylight Saving Time schedule: Begin Daylight Time at 2am on the first Sunday in April, and end Daylight Time at 2am on the last Sunday in October.

In 2007, the U.S. changed its Daylight Saving Time schedule so that it begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Sonora doesn't observe DST because they want to keep in sync with Arizona, which does not move their clocks forward or backward.

For the past three weeks, San Diego and Tijuana have been out of sync by one hour since San Diego as part of the USA observes DST on the second Sunday in March. Tijuana has been one hour behind of San Diego because of this gap.

When it's the last Sunday in October, Tijuana will be one hour behind San Diego again when Mexico returns to Standard Time, but San Diego is still on Daylight Time for one more week.

Gov't Agency: DTV a Mistake. Analog To Resume (April 1, 2010)

The federal government agency that oversees broadcast terrestrial signals have concluded after a nine month study that forcing terrestrial broadcast signals to switch to digital was wrong, and has told them they can resume broadcasting in analog.

This finding comes after fielding complaints that the digital signals, especially on channels 2-13, were almost impossible to pick up in areas that used to pick up the analog versions of the channels before the mandated digital switch took effect last June.

KGTV, a station that flipped to digital in February 2009 saw its number of people who once watched its broadcast signal went from 4,000 to a miniscle 12 when it switched from analog to digital. Of the 12, all of them live in nearby Claremont Mesa.

"We would be more than happy to ditch the digital signal and switch back to analog now that we have been given permission," in a press release from the KGTV Specific Manager. "Many viewers expressed outrage that they can no longer receive KGTV after we went from 316,000 watts of analog to some 14kw of digital. Many complained that they received extraterrestrial signals instead of ours since the digital switch."

KFMB, another VHF digital outlet since February 2009, also expresses the same feelings.

"Our viewers just can't get the signal," says the KFMB Specific Manager. "They resorted to watching old tapes of Larry Himmel At Large on their Betamax machines since losing our signal when we went to digital. We serve just one friggin viewer over the digital signal in Del Mar, and it's just an elderly woman who watches the CBS soaps. It's not the demographic that we want."

KPBS, KNSD, KUSI, and KSWB are also replacing their digital signals back into analog signals.

"Analog is cheaper to run than digital," says an anonymous KPBS-TV skinflint manager. "We once got far more pledges with our analog signal than we did when we had the pledge drive with our digital signal when only five people can receive it today, compared with 10,000 for our analog, so our pledges are way down."

Says the KNSD Specific Manager, "NBC's ratings are way down because our viewers prefer our shows in analog than digital, or does it seem that way?"

Says the KUSI Specific Manager, "F--k DTV! Analog, here we come!"

Says the KSWB Specific Manager, "Well, back to low definition TV. Let's carry some old Honeymooners episodes!"

Furthermore, as of noon today, not only will the TV signals revert back to analog, but to get the analog signals, you need to buy an old black and white TV set from a neighbor since the analog signals won't be compatable with digital TV. Of course it may or may not be true, but just waste some of your money on getting a analog-to-digital converter that does no good and use it as a doorstop.

710 ESPN (KSPN) and AM 830 KLAA, Wednesday announced a new partnership that effective April 5, 2010, will allow listeners of KLAA the opportunity to hear some of ESPN Radio's national weekday programming, while 710 ESPN has agreed to simulcast at least 60 Angels games this season

Inside Music Media: The music industry is trying to hang on to its manufacturing and promotional model that has served it well for decades with the assistance of terrestrial radio. That explains its desire to put an end to file sharing in whatever way it can even if it means suing their customers. But don't confuse file sharing and free views for piracy. It's simply today's generational replacement of radio

Dave Kohl: For the first time ever, the baseball season's first month just might be its most nationally televised month EVER, and that works for me. The only downer about the extended national schedule is that in most instances there are still blackout regions. MLB needs to realize that fans pay for cable or satellite and are entitled to have a complete choice of programming which is offered. At any rate, ESPN follows its season opening Sunday Night Baseball telecast of Yankees vs. Red Sox with 5 games on Monday April 5th

Randy Dotinga: Hey everybody! It's time for yet another round of everyone's favorite question-and-answer feature: Ask the Radio Columnist. Question: There seems to be a new station at 96.1 FM. Or else Lady Gaga has taken over the country and its airwaves in some sort of coup, since they seem to play her songs almost 24/7. Which is it? Answer: Lady Gaga is not in charge of the government. How can you tell? Because there hasn't been a run on sequins or hot pants yet. (Or at least that's what they'd like you to think.) The station at 96.1 FM is Q96, and it's that most unusual of things in San Diego: a new local radio station. It broadcasts from a transmitter in East County and plays Top 40-style music geared toward teenagers, similar to Channel 933 and Z90. The station was based in Imperial County but decided to move west. Its signal isn't incredibly powerful, so you may not pick it up in some parts of North County. And if you're over the age of, say, 16, you may not want to.

Grub Street: Once, not long ago, radio, AM stations and FM, was special. Always entertaining, radio found new music and DJs told us about what the new. Always, radio made listeners wonder and itÆs hard to accept how far radio has fallen. Jerry Del Colliano knows the acme and the nadir of radio. He lived the height of radio success and watched its horrific descent into nothingness. When he says the end of radio is now, not tomorrow, you must believe him. Knowing Jerry Del Colliano, as I do. Reading his blog, ôInside Music Mediaö and speaking, with him, I sense IÆm sitting Shiva for an old, trusted and loyal friend û radio. Radio is not yet dead. Still, weÆd be foolish to believe radio wasn't near the end - Says Del Colliano, " -- weÆll start charging a subscription fee sometime this summer. At this point, the annual fee is $99, but that may change. We continue to work on a plan for taking ôInside Music Mediaö to subscription. Tommy Kramer: From Tommy Kramer -- Here are the reasons why an iPod is better than most MusicRadio stations: It only plays songs I like. If I hit ôshuffle,ö I donÆt know which song will play next, so it actually has some element of surprise. It doesnÆt tease the next song, or the next three songs. (Again, that ôsurpriseö thing)

Inside Music Media: In radio, before consolidation killed the radio show, it was standard operating procedure to order a research project before, during and often after formats were changed. Somewhere along the way the radio industry defaulted on its obligation to observe the Hippocratic Oath of the entertainment industry - "first, do no harm to innovative ideas". When Buzz Bennett developed the ôQö rock format, those who knew him knew that his formatics came from his head - whatever state that was in at the time. Bill Drake drew a format clock for me on a napkin in a Philadelphia restaurant during a very memorable lunch. He did not at all feel obligated to anyone or anything. He was creating something from his mind. And, certainly the Drake format in all its simplicity, was a figment of his imagination before anyone researched it and you saw how well that worked out. You canÆt lead by following

Jacobs Media: The commercial load war yet to come will be much more vicious than the old Doubleday commercial-free tactics from the '80s. Fewer commercials (or none at all) were a big factor in originally putting satellite radio on the map. And as much as broadcasters want to ignore the "first alert" negative they have heard in focus groups and listener advisory panels for decades - too many commercials - the burgeoning digital competition changes the game

Are the radio shows misinformed about Obamacare or do they know more than newspapers would print? Is radio biased or informative when it comes to the right wing talk show hosts discussing Obamacare? DM me with your thoughts.

We know that a San Diego radio station will eventually flip formats sooner or later. When and which? It's anybody's guess. Happens all the time. Nobody expected Star 100.7 to flip to Jack-FM five years ago. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition either.
