Letter: Pirate Radio (Nov 14, 2009)

From Tom Blackwell:

I saw the movie "Pirate Radio" last night.

I recommend it for adults with backgrounds in music & radio.

When I was an undergraduate student at UT in the mid 1970's, the man who owned the apartment complex where I lived had stories about investing in one of the pirate radio ships. So in those years I knew people with ownership interests in 2 ends of radio, with the others being in San Antonio.

In 1972 or 1973, KLIF-1190 hired another student from my high school as an overnight DJ. He had an accident with a stack of carts, and responded with the "F" word. His mic was open. He was fired the next day. In the movie, the word is used intentionally, but it was from a location beyond any government jurisdiction.

There's an underlying message with this movie, that a lot of listeners are motivated when unreasonable government policies try to stop them from using content, like Rock & Roll. In a different way the US Government did the same thing with "Radio Free Europe."

The Fall of NBC (Nov 14, 2009)

Since Jay Leno was demoted to prime time's 10pm slot, it's been downhill for NBC's late night sked since Conan O'Brien took over The Tonight Show in June.

Ratings for Tonight, followed by Conan's old show, Late Night, now hosted by Jimmy Fallon, have fallen so much that last week, CBS's "Late Show" and "Late Late Show" hosted by David Letterman and Craig Ferguson respective are all of a sudden competetive with NBC's late night shows. In fact, CBS's late night shows could beat NBC's late night shows regularily for the first time since who knows when.

Leno's ratings for NBC's 10pm slot are so low that most of the shows from CBS and ABC are beating it. Funny thing is that I'm watching parts of Leno myself instead of watching the other networks' mundane offerings opposite it. Leno's show looks more like a displaced Tonight Show instead of a traditional prime time variety show that would work better in the 10pm slot.

In the 60s and 70s, I was aware of variety shows hosted by Dean Martin, Flip Wilson, Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn, The Hudson Brothers, Donny and Marie, and others including the long running Carol Burnett Show, where the hosts did some monologues and sang, plus introduced the guests. They even appearred in comedy sketches on a regular basis. Flip did more and had some of his sketches involve people in the audience.

There were also Ed Sullivan and Lawrence Welk shows, but they were in a class by themselves. Sullivan just introduced the guests while Welk introduced the guests and sometimes conducted his band in the background.

Leno is an oddity in prime time. He's a talk show host who does a monologue, hosts some comedy sketches, has a chat with a few guests, and introduces a musical act. He's a workaholic type of television host. The odd part is that Leno doesn't perform music himself or conduct an orchestra, but he, like Flip, get some of the people in the audience into some of his sketches like game show takeoffs.

The ratings for Leno are dim, but does NBC mind? As long as it's cheap to produce, it's OK, but with low ratings for the 18-49 audience, how long will NBC stick with this show?

Update: LPTV's Etc. (Nov 12, 2009)

KSDX-LD has changed its virtual channel to 9.1. Over the air tuners need to rescan to pick it up. This ends the confusion with XHTIT-DT from Tijuana, which had been using 29.2 for a while. XHTIT is now using virtual channel 29.1

Cox Cable South QAM Users Need To Rescan (Nov 12, 2009)

From Steve of Cox:

On Nov. 12, 2009, Cox is required to make changes to PSIP data that will affect customers who use digital TV's to tune to digital channels that Cox provides 'in the clear.'

As a result, customers using QAM tuning digital televisons to pick up broadcast HD (and a few other) channels will need to re-scan for digital channels on November 12, 2009 to find their new locations. The new locations and names will be:

107 NBC Weather Plus
111 V-me
117 NBC Universal Sports
119 C-SPAN2*
120 C-SPAN3*
136 KDTF Telefutura
409 XHUAA
416 KSDX
705 Fox5 HD
706 SD 6 HD
707 KNSD HD
708 KFMB HD
709 KUSI HD
710 KGTV HD
711 KPBS HD
*C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3 can already be found on Ch. 119 and Ch. 120 by conducting a re-scan.

These changes are reflected on our channel lineup located at: http://ww2.cox.com/wcm/en/residential/datasheet/sandiego/channellineup_sd.pdf

Comments and Questions For Above from the HDTV Cox forum:

The channel numbers given are Cox set-top-box numbers, not PSIP "virtual channels" that our TVs tune. Does this mean that we can no longer tune in KFMB-HD on our QAM tuners by entering 8.1?

It sounds as though they're changing the PSIP data so that the numbers will match the leased box and CableCARD numbers.

Cable systems are not supposed to change OTA signals in any way. Since the PSIP data is part of the ATSC signal, they should not alter it. Changing the actual channel (channel 75 @ 531MHz, for example) is fair game and would require a re-scan, but that's about it. We'll see.

Thanksgiving Season Mid-Holiday: Veterans Day (Nov 11, 2009)

Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling.

Veterans Day, honors all American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country. November 11 of each year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in the lives to keep our country free.

On this day, take some time out of your day to thank a living Veteran for being part of the team of one of the Armed Forces in the mission of keeping America free. If you can, treat a Veteran to a dinner (not fast food) at a restaurant, buy them a new digital TV, donate some food and clothes, buy him a David Tanny comedy CD, just about anything you can think of to thank a veteran for giving up a couple of their years in exchange for helping to protect our mother land.

Stupid Criminals from New Zealand (Nov 10, 2009)

We bring you this video from the Stupid Criminal department of YouTube. The description reads:

It's a classic.

Twittering (Nov 10, 2009)

Chrissy of Fox 5 wanted me to take an IQ Test. I purposely got all of the questions wrong. Then, it asked me for my cell phone number. Guess what? I don't own a cell phone. I entered a phone number that I made up. Then it directed me to enter a PIN number. I made up a fake one. It said that it was wrong. Aha! I guess my I.Q. is way up there because I'm not stupid enough to enter a PIN number for a website that has no business of getting PIN numbers.
