Update: LPTV's Etc. (Nov 6, 2009)Jo on the hdtv.forsandiego.com forum posted the news that "INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK, INC. K61GH has been granted temporary authority to transmit digital on channel 50, 15Kw from Mount San Miguel."I haven't done this in a while, so let's update what's going on in the underground world of low power television in San Diego county. To recap, last month, KSDX signed off its analog channel on 29 and has launched its digital channel on physical channel 9 (virtual 29.1) from Mount San Miguel. On June 12, Entravision signed off its analog Telefutura affilliate channel 36 and launched its digital KDTF-LD on physical channel 51 as soon as KUSI signed off its analog signal on 51 earlier that day. It transmits KDTF's programming as virtual 36.2, but also piggybacks its two other stations, KBNT-CA (Univision) on 36.1, and XHDTV (MyTV) on 36.13. Relaying XHDTV on a local digital signal makes sense because XHDTV's analog signal isn't receivable in places where its behind a mountain to the south as XHDTV's transmitter is deep into Baja California. KBNT-CA is not only relayed on KDTF 36.1, it's also relayed from Mount Woodson in Poway on channel 46 (KTCD-LP), and from a hill in Vista on channel 49 (KHAX-LP). KZSD-LP channel 41, the Azteca America affilliate in San Diego, is piggybacked onto KGTV's digital signal on 10.15. K09YL-D is broadcasting on channel 9 from its studio on Ruffner Street near the mythical area of Downtown Kearny Mesa. Like KSDX, this station is low power, and its signal doesn't seem to travel far because low power VHF stations in the channel 7-13 range can broadcast up to 300 watts (not kw) of power, making it hard for DTV stations to pick up. Three stations are reportedly interested in moving to channel 25 as of July. I haven't come across anything that's changed since then. K63EN filed a displacement application to transmit on channel 25 (15kw) from Mount San Miguel. They also have a construction permite for channel 7 (3kw) from Mount Woodson. KBNT-CA filed a displacement application to move to channel 25, 15kw from Mount Soledad. McGraw-Hill Broadcasting, owner of KGTV and KZSD-LP, TV-41 and 10.15, Azteca America, also has a pending "NEW" App for channel 25, 15kw, Mt. Soledad. K63EN might get the application over McGraw Hill's application since the former is for a displacement. KBNT-CA's move to channel 25 from Mount San Miguel could interfere with whichever of the two other operators of channel 25 from Mount Soledad materialize. KZSD-LD also filed a displacement application for channel 39, 15kw, Mt. San Miguel. I'm thinking that KZSD-LD wants to be on 25 from the West and 39 from the Southeast parts of the county so the station can cover the area better. Moving KZSD-LD out of the digital signal of KGTV could allow KGTV to use the entire spectrum for higher definition television like KFMB's non multiplexed signal does today. K35DG (UCSD TV) has a pending displacement app. for channel 11. I have seen no updates regarding the statuses of the four stations operating out of Mount Woodson near Poway to file for a displacement application or do a flash cut to digital. The analog stations on 41, 43, 46, and 48 are all low power operations. Two stations broadcasting from coastal North County, 26 and 49, are low power operations with no news about digital conversion to share.
