The CW Should Have Gotten Monday Night Football (Oct 1, 2009)

Ratings being published elsewhere indicate that Monday Night Football is still a big hit even though it moved to cable in 2006.

Ratings for MNF on ESPN are so strong that its beating the ratings for the top-rated broadcast network in its time period.

In cities where ESPN's broadcast is being repeated on TV stations in home team markets where one of the two teams are represented, MNF's ratings are through the roof.

Anyone care for Gossip Girl when football is on? The CW should have gotten MNF.

Mel Phillips: The answer to whether or not the FCC can mandate FM radio for cell phones is no. However, how many of you ever believed the agency could mandate that analog TV become digital? I didn't think so. Jeff Smulyan has championed the inclusion of an FM signal on all cell phones but like the name he chose for his company, Emmis, he believes in the truth - the literal Hebrew to English translation of his company name

SDNN: Faltering Radio Industry (Oct 1, 2009)

æJeff and JerÆ continue to search for home in faltering radio industry.

Excerpts:

The traditional media world has been turned on its head by the Great Recession and radio is no exception. ItÆs a simple equation really. Fewer advertisers equals less revenue, which equals smaller budgets, which equals cutbacks, resource reductions and eventual layoffs.

In August, the news that longtime morning show duo Jeff and Jer (Jeff Detrow and Jerry Cesak) were leaving Star 94.1 after a contract dispute, left a tangible example of just how deep the struggles of the industry are.

ôI canÆt even listen to the radio now, just because how disconnected the medium is,ö [Chris] Cantore said. ôItÆs about content, content, content. [Radio stations] love to blame the Internet [for the decrease in popularity], but all the Internet did was prove to people that they can get better content than what they were being force fed foràwell, ever since the beginning of the medium, really.ö

He said that the Internet now just simply does it better.

ôRadio stations didnÆt listen to their consumers and now the consumers are out there with the birth of new and social media. People are more interested in what a blogger has to say about music, pop culture, and entertainment, than what the radio has to say,ö Cantore said.

Mel Phillips: You may have missed this gem of a story that could affect how loudly you play your car radio. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) filed suit against AT&T three months ago, alleging that each time a musical ringtone goes off in public the mobile phone music snippet constitutes a performance and violates copyright law

Daytime Confidential: Insiders tell TV Guide Canada that ABC may cancel "One Life to Live" next year. The website editor hears it could happen as early as Spring. Says the DC editor: "Watch One Life to Live!"

Comment by KeiraNY: If OLTL is indeed cancelled, I'm giving up on ABC!! Why is it that OLTL continues to be treated like the 'stepchild' of ABC?? It's the BEST show they have right now. Do they really believe we want to watch the crapiness that GH has become? That AMC is barely recognizable these days? If Mr. Frons had any brain power left, he'd take a look at "fixing" AMC first and look to return it to its glory days while telling Bob Guza at GH that there needs to be less mob/killings and more romance, storytelling! THAT MR. Frons is what can save the ABC Daytime division. But what the hell do we know? We're only 'dumb' fans of the show and we'll watch whatever you put in front of us, right? .

Opposing comment by kitty: Why should I care about a show that doesn't care about me? OLTL is not watchable. I could care less about Rex/Gigi and whoever else they put in that mess, not to mention Cole/Starr. If anyone behind the scenes (this means Ron and Frank) cared, we still wouldn't be having Rex/Gigi promos when the story has bombed from day one. They want my viewership, give me what I want, and Dorian pretending to be gay isn't my idea of entertainment.
