Sep 1994 vs. Sep 2009 (Sep 5, 2009)

Sep 1994: working in Kearny Mesa, living on the Internet, and new Melrose Place episodes on channel 6.

Sep 2009: working in Kearny Mesa, living on the Internet, and new Melrose Place episodes on channel 6.

I must be in a rut. I'm a baby boomer stuck in a Generation X routine.

Gen X Finds Its Oldies (Sep 5, 2009)

From Tom Taylor of radio-info: "Gen X" is Clear Channel's new lifestyle target in Louisville. "Gen X" radio WLGX (100.5) will play "grunge, hip-hop, hair bands, boy bands" and more, says the company. Classic/variety hits "Louie" WLUE had run its course after four years, and after considering a switch to hot AC, Clear Channel tries something fresh that's worth watching. The "Gen X" packaging is very broad musically - extremely broad by the standards of today's highly-researched music matching techniques. But the packaging is more important than the music inside the box. So you get rockers like U2, Pearl Jam over to Dave Matthews Band.then Madonna.then Eminem. So it's about lifestyle, not labels like "rock" or "CHR." The attitude is what CC calls "irreverent unpredictability" - very Gen X. Clear Channel Senior VP of Programming Jon Zellner says they're trying to "capture how 30-somethings listen to music" with a presentation that "ignores genres and categories." This is a welcome experiment. Check out the look and feel of the website and listen to "Gen X" here. The Kentucky Board of Radio-Info.com had the "Gen X" thing, the new WLGX calls and the website registrations figured out ahead of yesterday's 5pm debut, and they're still talking.

Here's the first hour of "Gen X" music - It's clearly designed to show off the scope of the playlist. Kickoff song was "Get Ready For This" by 2 Unlimited. Then Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit." "This is How We Do it", Montell Jordan. "Just A Girl", No Doubt. "1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)", Coolio. "Unbelievable", EMF. "How Bizarre", OMC. "All The Small Things", Blink 182. "C'mon and Get My Love", D-Mob. "Santeria", Sublime. "Good Vibrations", Marky Mark. "Ants Marching", Dave Matthews Band. "Mr. Vain", Culture Beat. "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong", Spin Doctors. And "If You Had My Love", Jennifer Lopez. Gen X is "not a typical station", indeed. Though some of the "Jack"-like stations around the country are doing something similar, musically, such as the one South Central runs in Nashville, WCJK (96.3). Also Entercom's new "Buzz" in Sacramento, KBZC (106.5). Every generation eventually wants to hear its oldies - even if they hate the term.

Radio Station Sells for $1 (Sep 5, 2009)

Weird news from Tom Taylor of radio-info.com: This FM translator at 92.7 in Phoenix sells for just $1. It's K224CJ and Robert Ries is acquiring it from fellow Scottsdale resident Joanne Cannon (Zorba Resources) for a buck. Their filing says they "have not entered into a formal written agreement" and have an oral agreement at this point for $1, for "the license and related assets."

Meet Bishop E.W. Jackson Jr. (Sep 5, 2009)

Bishop E.W. Jackson Jr. http://www.exodusfaithministries.org/ is sometimes heard as a partial sponsor on some of the radio talk shows such as "The Roger Hedgecock Show."

About once a week, he delivers a 60-second message of the issues of the day from a Christian point of view.

Bishop E. W. Jackson, Sr. is author of the book, "TEN COMMANDMENTS TO AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE - Making Your Dreams Come True" published in the summer of 2008. He is also Founder of Exodus Faith Ministries, a nondenominational ministry headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia with a satellite church in Boston, Massachusetts.

In a time where political correctness and the leftist media continue to wreak havoc on the people who disagree with their point of view, we're beginning to hear a louder roar from the religious side who won't sit there and take it from what is now the not-so-moral majority to put it in their terms.

In a time where the return of the Fairness Doctrine would threaten the existance of conservative-leaning radio talk show hosts and religious radio outlets by limiting their freedom of speech, people are beginning to wise up to the fact that even what they can say in public if not on the radio may get them sued by the gays on the grounds of verbal harassment. Right now, a ministry and conservative talk show host can say from a Judeo-Christian perspective that homosexuality is an abomination, but if the Fairness Doctrine is reactivated, they won't be able to say that without a threat of equal time and maybe a lawsuit.

E.W. Jackson is also on Twitter http://twitter.com/ewjsr sharing some of his 140-character views on the issues. Here's a few and I'm quoting him:

Pat Mauceri, Christian actress,, fired from ABC soap for refusing to utter line to "gay son" character: "God made you that way." Bless her!

Here's a news flash for the LGBT crowd. God DIDN'T make you that way! It is abnormal, perverse and abominable sin. They need deliverance!

Hope you catch Tucker Carlson's Fox News special on bias in school text books. The bias: Denigrate American history & promote homosexuality.

Further school textbook bias: denigrate Christianity & extol Islam. Never associate Islam with terrorism. Huh?

Further school text bias: never, ever acknowledge the Judeo-Christian foundations of America. That is a no no, facts notwithstanding.

As an editor of Dave's Radio Blog, I want to hear your views whether you agree with Jackson's views or not. What do you think of a religious organization's way of dealing with the issues? Is there a bias in today's textbooks as opposed to the textbooks of 30 years ago?

Pat Mauceri Fired From ABC Soap (Sep 5, 2009)

From Daytime Confidential: http://www.daytimeconfidential.com/ Pat Mauceri claimed that she was fired from the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live" over her "Religious Beliefs", and is exploring legal options against ABC, which owns the soaper. Read the full article here

Here's a question: should the producers have forced a script rewrite instead of firing her? I don't think that it's fair that she get fired for supporing her beliefs, even though that it's not in vogue to be anti-homosexual when you're in showbusiness, a gay-friendly business.

From Facebook E-Mail Alert (Sep 5, 2009)

"Melissa Joan [Hart] became a fan of MellyJHart on Facebook and suggested you become a fan too."

So it's possible to be a fan of yourself. Maybe I should be a fan of myself.

Jay Posner of the SD U-T reports that Chris Ello is returning to XTRA 1360 on Sep 8 from 9am-NOON.

Kurt Hanson: A new in-dash car radio, to be debuted this month by Parrot, is built entirely around mobile music devices and notably lacks a CD player. iPhones can plug directly into the receiver, while other mobile devices can connect via Bluetooth. The devices can be controlled through the radio's color LCD display and stored in a hidden compartment, keeping them out of the way when driving. The radio's direct integration with such mobile devices could make it easier than ever to tune into your favorite webcast on the way to work.
