NFL TV in San Diego History (July 23, 2009)

In 1960, KFMB-8 had CBS's NFL, and XETV-6 had ABC's AFL, which began playing games starting with that season.

In 1965, the AFL moved to NBC, so beginning that fall, KFMB-8 had CBS's NFL, and KOGO-10 had NBC's AFL.

After the merger of the NFL and the AFL, The AFL league became the AFC, while the original teams in the NFL league made up the NFC beginning with the 1970 season.

In 1970, ABC got into the NFL with Monday Night Football, so XETV-6 was back in the NFL business. XETV-6 had ABC's MNF, KFMB-8 had CBS's NFC, and KOGO-10 had NBC's AFC.

In 1973, the ABC affilliation moved by order of FCC to KCST-39, so beginning that fall, KCST-39 had ABC's MNF, KFMB-8 had CBS's NFC, and KGTV-10 had NBC's AFC.

In 1977, ABC and NBC swapped affillations, so beginning that fall, KGTV-10 had ABC's MNF, KFMB-8 had CBS's NFC, and KCST-39 had NBC's AFC. KCST became KNSD in the fall of 1988.

In 1994, the NFC moved to Fox beginning that fall, so XETV was back in the NFL business again. KGTV-10 had ABC's MNF, XETV-6 had Fox's NFC, and KNSD-39 had NBC's AFC.

In 1998, the AFC games moved to CBS beginning that fall, so KNSD-39 was out of the NFL business for the first time since the 1972 season. Also for the first time since then, the NFL packages were on three local VHF affilliates again. KGTV-10 had ABC's MNF, XETV-6 had Fox's NFC, and KFMB-8 had CBS's AFC.

In 2006, Monday Night Football moved to ESPN, while Sunday Night Football, which had been on TNT and ESPN alternating since it started up in 1987, moved to NBC. ESPN had Sunday Night Football 1987 through 2005 NFL seasons. TNT had Sunday Night Football for the first halves of the 1990 through 1997 NFL seasons, while ESPN had the rest of the games for the second halves.

Beginning in the fall of 2006, KNSD-39 had NBC's SNF, XETV-6 had Fox's NFC, and KFMB-8 had CBS's AFC. ESPN had MNF.

In 2008, the Fox affilliation moved to KSWB-69, and once again, XETV-6 was left without a network that carried the NFL for the third time; the first time because the network lost the football contract, and the last two times because the network affilliation moved to another station.

Beginning in the fall of 2008, KNSD-39 had NBC's SNF, KSWB-69 had Fox's NFC, and KFMB-8 had CBS's AFC. ESPN had MNF.

Since 1960 and through 2009, here's how many seasons each of the five local stations had a network with an NFL affilliation.

XETV-6, 1960-1964, 1970-1972, 1994-2007. Years: ABC(AFL)-5, ABC(MNF)-3, Fox(NFC)-14, none-28. NFL-22.

KFMB-8, 1960-1993, 1998-2009. Years: CBS(NFL/NFC)-34, CBS(AFC)-12, none-4. NFL-46.

KOGO/KGTV-10, 1965-2005. Years: NBC(AFL/AFC)-12, ABC(MNF)-29, none-9. NFL-41.

KCST/KNSD-39 (since 1968), 1973-1997, 2006-2009. Years: ABC(MNF)-4, NBC(AFC)-21, NBC(SNF)-4, none-13. NFL-29.

KTTY/KSWB-69 (since 1984), 2008-2009. Years: Fox(NFC)-2, none-24. NFL-2.

KUSI-51 (since 1982). Years: none-28.

KNSD had two different prime time NFL packages in its history.
KFMB had two different Sunday afternoon NFL conference packages (including the NFC, the predecessor of the old NFL league before the merger) in its history.
XETV had the AFL Sunday afternoon package, but not when it became the AFC by 1970. It also had the NFC Sunday afternoon package.

KGTV had the most years with a nighttime football package.

Since 1970, a nighttime football package for broadcast TV aired on XETV, KCST, then KGTV for Monday Night through the 2005 season. Since 2006, KNSD had a nighttime football package for Sunday nights; it was the second time that station had a network with a prime time NFL package.
