MISS AN ISSUE OF THE DVG?

CATCH UP HERE:

Rain has come as forecast. Thank you Lord. It's impossible to water the way he does. We need rain. Humans, critters and green stuff. The showers will produce wild flowers. Some have already begun to pop up on the hillside by the house. The entire bank will soon be covered. Seems to be happening a bit early this year. Then they'll go away and grubby weed like stuff will begin to grow, be green and then turn into stuff that you have to weed wack away as part of your "home defense," fire barrier.

When we get a good rain the big creek down the hill roars. It's a pleasant sound. Nice go to sleep music at night. I hope it rains hard enough.

We're more appreciative of rain than most folks. When we turn on a faucet the water comes from the earth not from a treatment plant. So we depend on rain right here and right now. I do conserve. When I shave I fill the sink with water rather than let the water run the duration. I'm always mindful of an open spigot. We've never had a water problem but a couple of neighbors have had to dig their wells deeper over the years.

Of course this is San Diego. The rain is expected to continue thru Saturday. By Sunday we'll be whining about the lack of sunshine.

MUTTERINGS

**You think you have strange neighbors? Fuggetaboutit!! I'll only tell you about one but yikes this one is enough. A couple of the others are weird but. His name is Joseph (Iseppi). He lives on about 3 acres of property that has no legal structure. County code has been at him for years for living on the property without legal dwelling. He remains. He builds tree houses and clay castles and strange folks visit at strange hours. He's lightened up a little in recent years. Used to be if you came up the road next to his property he'd jump out and throw stones are you. Folks out here think he got medicated and that calmed him down a bit.

There is no running water down there. No bonafide sewage. Iseppi kinda lives off the land. He used to ride a bike everywhere but now he's seriously into old Vws. Some guy up the road either sells or barters the old cars to Iseppi. He'll drive one for a month or so and it'll break down and along comes another. I think he's got four of them down there right now. One runs. For now.

Iseppi wears a turban and some kind of robes. He knots up his hair and may not have had it cut for one or more decades.

Various neighbors have called code on Iseppi over the years. Most recently for not cutting back brush on his property to create a fire barrier. County had to come in and cut stuff down. Iseppi still hasn't paid that bill from 2003. (according to in the know neighbors). Code folks have a foot high file on Iseppi and even code inspectors have horror stories to tell about being threatened etc. But he remains.

It has taken some time but I've come to kind of like Iseppi. I may need a county permit to shovel a hole to plant a tree. Iseppi don't need no stinking permit. To do anything. Most folks have to go to work daily. Iseppi don't do no work. (there are rumors about his "plantings" however. I could go on but you get my drift…I envy Iseppi.

He is even featured on a greeting card. I kid you not. All the words in the language we love cannot describe my bud and pal Iseppi better than this picture. You have to enlarge it to get the full benefit. My neighbor Iseppi:

Yea dats him in the crouch. You can top this?

**Roger must have been the inspiration for a cartoon in a recent issue of The New Yorker Magazine. A cartoon king is lying on a psychiatrists couch, a tear coming from his eye. His nut doctor tells the king: "Well, if you're going to wiretap your people you are going to hear some things."

**There is some good news to report regarding Roger's widely acclaimed nationally syndicated radio programme. Insiders tell us that he's just landed "Dulcolax," as a major sponsor. The advertiser finds Roger's audience particularly appealing and is pleased to note in a press release that Roger will do personal endorsements for the product. Told you this show would be a success.

**We've mentioned in recent editions that Roger has abandoned Homefront San Diego. Support for our military families does not suit the "format," of his national show. Huh? I'll tell some stories about his "support" of Homefront in a future Gazette. In the meantime Homefront Lives!! And we're gonna do our best to maintain a radio exposure. I know a number of radio folks (and TV as well) get the Gazette. I need some airtime periodically to keep the story of this community standing tall for Navy and Marine families alive. And we can use some print help as well.

The Jack Rice show on KOGO will give us a slot every other Friday from 6p-7p. I'm hoping that Rick Amato on KCBQ (9p - 11p weekdays) will host our volunteers periodically to reach out to donors and those families in need. We may be able to do something on WS radio via the internet. And we'll keep pumping at y'all in the Gazette.

We may be doing a slow pull from Iraq but Afghanistan looms and gosh only knows where our Warriors will be called next. Meanwhile we continue to treat low ranked Heroes and their families like …you fill in the blank.

At risk of beating a very tired and wet horse, here are a couple of reasons Homefront fights to stay alive and will remain active:

To whom it may concern,

It hurts me to even have to write this letter asking for help. I am a husband, soon-to-be father, and member of the military with pride and I still don't understand why I can't provide for my family. I have exhausted all of my resources trying to provide for my pregnant wife and soon-to-be child, but I am only one person with limited time. I would get two jobs if I could, but I get home to late and I am already beat from work. I will not and am not asking for money. I am only asking for help with food, clothing, and necessary items for our child when it is born this June. My wife and I are really good about budgeting and have done all we can, but food it still an expense and often it's the one that suffers. I need my wife healthy if I ever want my child to have a chance. Our need for clothing is nothing eccentric. I need only new uniforms and running shoes for PT. I have had my shoes since boot camp and they are falling apart. My uniforms are getting small and my command wants me to be new ones, but I can't afford them. On top of all this my child is going to need clothes as well as my wife during her pregnancy. I am at the end of my rope and don't know where else to turn. Thank you for any help you can offer.

(I omitted his name)

THIS FROM ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS APPEALING HER CASE FOR HOMEFRONT TO HELP A HERO WHOSE CAR HAS STOPPED. I QUESTIONED THE EXPENDITURE BECAUSE OF RANK (HE'S AN E-5). OUR VOLUNTEER ASKED FOR A SECOND CONSIDERATION:

Jimmy I see what your saying but talking to Steven (THE WARRIOR) he sounds desperate a little history this is their only car they have four children and unforntuly they have a car payment of 515.00 a month I know not real smart I know that Dennis Bell will be talking to him about budgeting his money. His mom will lend him 1000.00 but cannot lend him more. I would give this one a yes but know that allot of expensive car repairs the last couple of months so will abide by what your final say is. Just wanted to plead my case.

Our best guidance comes from our volunteers who deal directly with the families. Based on this note I signed off on the expenditure (a couple of grand). Would you have refused this Warrior?

**Emails, we get Emails…we get lots and lots of Emails:

Good luck Mr. Valentine,

From my perspective and from what I know, it was Roger's perogative to shake up his staff and make changes. However, it seems he could've done it in a classy straightforward manner.

Anyway, I wish you well and look forward to my subscription to the Dehesa Valley Gazette.
