**Inaugural fever in full pitch. I have the day off so I can mostly watch all the good stuff. Noreen has to work but she'll watch on her lunch break. A million, two million, more? Most folks won't see squat unless they are near a jumbo-tron. And even then they'll hike a couple of miles or more to find a standing place where they won't be able to see anything. Then they'll stand for hours waiting for ceremonies to begin and departure will be no easier than arrival. But these hardy folks will be able to say they were there, in person on this great day of history.

This inaugural has extraordinary meaning for all of us. One wants to provide a special mention of import to Black Americans. I choose not to do so. I have no relatives (that I know of) who were held in bondage. No relatives who risked life and limb to drink from a sacred water fountain, dine sitting at restricted swivel stools at the local cafT nor chose a bus seat that suited ones fancy at risk of my life. I do not have a grandparent who was hung. No great grandparent born to a life of toil without reward. I have no such relatives.

But I am brother by birth to my fellow citizens. We are a nation of greatness because our citizens are great. Tuesday will be a testament to our greatness. We have overcome. I am always proud to be an American. My pride may show a bit more on Tuesday. And I will stand beneath my flag in the courtyard and be in awe and know again that God indeed does bless America.

**The Onion comic on line newspaper carried a recent headline: "Black Man Gets Worst Job In World."

**I don't get to hear Rush much anymore. It's a medical thing. But Noreen tuned in one day last week as the most popular talk radio host in America was telling that he'd acknowledge the Obama inaugural by putting a porta-potty in his studio and he'd make a point of using it every 15 minutes. Hey this guy is the leader of the current version of the GOP. I suspect we have some work to do before 2010? (oh, Noreen gagged and tuned out).

**Speaking of the great one. Guess Rush might be rooting for the Arizona Cardinals today? Can he root for Donovan McNabb? The guy is only at QB for Philadelphia because he's Black.

The worrisome thing about Rush is….he has an audience for this stuff. But hey, the GOP runs a big tent ops.

**Got off the hill a lot this week. Made a trek with the Missus down to Ocean Beach for some fish tacos at South Beach CafT. Mid day on a Friday and you couldn't find a parking spot. OB ain't changed despite the Starbucks on Newport Ave. Beat up VW vans, kids with back packs hustling for change, an early weekend beer party beginning on the sidewalk outside an apartment building. Dogs ever where. Junk (sorry, antique) shops all over the place. We bought some junk for sitting areas on the property. Nice to see some things (places) don't change much.

**On Saturday evening we went to a gathering put on by my new Congressman Duncan D. Hunter. A good turnout at the Ronald Reagan Community Center in El Cajon. Duncan is gonna do fine in his dad's seat. I asked Duncan senior if Duncan D had gotten his old Rayburn building office and Dunk replied, "No, he got a better one. He's a freshman."

Duncan senior's other son Sam has just gotten out of basic training. U.S. Army. Sam is a husband and dad of two kids. We are a nation at war. Sam signed up. It's like family tradition. You serve your nation. Senior was Army too. Duncan D is still a Marine (reserve?) with two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

Duncan Senior was kind enough to call me while we were in Texas for the holidays. As we chatted he told that Sam was back home shortly after basic for the holidays. Sam and Duncan D got to grab assing around. The ole macho Army vs. Marine stuff. When you get combat training there really ain't no way to play physically without some potential for harm. Sam broke two of Duncan D's ribs. A story that shall be told in the Hunter family for years to come.

I hope I can do some volunteer work for Duncan D. I'm blessed to have him represent me in the People's House.

And a thank you to all the folks at the event who were kind enough to come up and chat with me, express concern for Noreen and I and offer their blessings. Most have signed up for the Gazette and I am grateful.

**I also had some time to chat with Jay LaSuer and his wife Lynne. I'm a serious supporter of Jay to be our next duly elected Sheriff of San Diego County. He's of the Hunter family mold. Prior military service, served in the Sheriff's department and then as state Assemblyman. He's a strong border security advocate, staunch on the 2nd Amendment and a citizen's right to carry and he's not a career bureaucrat.

Election is not until 2010 but candidates are lining up. Jim Duffy is in the pack (currently an under sheriff?) as is William Gore who sits at current Sheriff Bill Kolender's right hand. Gore is double dipping after a career stint with the FBI. Word is that Kolender, who has been foggy headed for the past couple of years (they finally gave him a full time driver to keep him out of trouble) will opt to resign before his term and convince the board of sups to appoint Gore as interim boss.

We have some work to do but Jay is out of the gate early. We're gonna work to be a presence up in North County. We'll try to get our GOP congress folks on board. Not sure I have much clout to offer Jay but I've been on board for months and will do whatever I can. The GOP will have to be rebuilt from the ground up. I'm there.

**It was a day or so after the Miracle on the Hudson that cable TV began to note the heroism of the second officer and the flight crew on the flight. The second seat works hand in glove with the pilot. My wife noted that there were three people in the cockpit. I pondered. Was there a Navigator as well? Stupid me. Noreen just looked at me. Her reference, of course, was to God.
