Dehesa Valley Gazette (January 16, 2009)Author: Jimmy Valentine.kogojimmyv@gmail.com - e-mail him if you want to be a part of his new mailing list since Roger repossessed the original Flashfax mailing list. http://www.dehesavalleygazette.com DEHESA VALLEY GAZETTE http://www.dehesavalleygazette.com Published periodically from San Diego, CA (The Official BUT UNAUTHORIZED Organ Of Mayor Jimmy Valentine) FRIDAY JANUARY 16TH 2009 To subscribe or unsubscribe email kogojimmyv@gmail.com It's an old clichT but clichTs become such because they are much used phrases. The one that comes to me today is that sometimes you can be too smart for your own good. I place in evidence the matter of the termination of one Jimmy Valentine as Executive Producer of the Roger Hedgecock Show. As Roger phrased it, "I am making a change at the Executive Producer position." And indeed he had already done so. Prior to confronting me with his "change, " on Monday November 10th Roger had already "hired," my replacement, one Brent Winterble, the producer of the soon (at that point) to be defunct Michael Reagan Show. Roger had set a wage for Brett, benefits and holidays. Brett was nervous and wary but accepted and took the news to Michael. Deal done. These employment discussions between Roger and Brett commenced in October and had concluded by the date of my firing by Roger. I'm gone and Brett is in. But wait. The "too smart," part now comes into play. One works on Roger's show at his pleasure. His contracts at KOGO stipulated that he had a voice in hiring, firing and maintaining members of his staff. You were paid by Clear Channel but were responsible to Roger. So it's important to note that there are two players here…..Roger and Clear Channel. While Roger "terminated" me, Clear Channel "eliminated," my position based on Roger's finding disfavor with me. The job of "local talk show producer," for Roger no longer existed. That subtlety is important because while Roger "hired," Brett, Clear Channel did not. In fact there was no position on the payroll for Brett to fill. My POSITION had been eliminated. Stricken from the rolls. In order for Brett to come on board the Clear Channel payroll a NEW position must be created. (Syndicated show producer?) Thus while Roger and his PR folks announced Brett's hiring to the radio media, Brett in fact was not hired, at least not by Clear Channel. As of this writing that is still the case. Brett remains in some kind of limbo. Either Roger has been paying Brett (Roger still has his first dime from his paper route) or Radio America has had to keep Brett on their payroll. Or Brett may be on unemployment while he works for Roger. Factor into this scenario the upcoming "layoffs," or "firings," promised for announcement on Tuesday January 20th. Clear Channel stations across the country got their marching orders last week in San Antonio and will execute those cuts next week, at least so it is being reported. At the same time that Clear Channel is eliminating personnel, Roger finds himself in the position of advocating that Clear Channel take on a new employee in a new position. The order is to cut. Roger wants to add. Making matters worse for Roger and perhaps Brett is that Roger's suit bud at KOGO is gone. Bob Bolinger was ousted as top CC dog in San Diego a couple of weeks ago. Any unsigned (verbal) deals that Roger may have had with Bob are now subject to review by a new top dog, who comes to San Diego from Tucson with orders to perform payroll surgery. This may all play out in Roger's favor and for Brett's sake I certainly hope so. But it will take some doing to Hire a new employee for a new position at the same time you are firing perhaps scores of local workers. Corporate gonna buy that? And note please that Roger is no longer a Clear Channel employee. He works for Radio America. Radio America has a producer for Roger's show working full time in Virginia as well as technical staff and web site staff etc. Radio America is likely not keen on keeping Brett on their payroll inasmuch as Roger's original deal with RA was that Clear Channel would pay for three local folks on his staff and then Roger inadvertently eliminated one of those positions from the CC payroll. Roger promised Brett a job that he now cannot (at least until this very day) deliver. Poor Brett lives up in Simi Valley with his children and school teacher wife and is not likely to move to San Diego (you think there is a lot of school teacher hiring going on around here these days). Roger demands that Brett be in San Diego at least a couple of days each week, so Brett must commute - drive, Greyhound or Amtrak to and fro unless Roger is putting him up in his spare bedroom. Meanwhile at KOGO Brett is kind of a "guest," without credentials. Several insider folks tell that Brett does not have full security access. Perhaps he is listed as an "intern." (Don't make me tell the Larry Stirling story) Here the announcement from some weeks ago about my departure and Brett's "arrival." "Jimmy V." Exits Hedgecock Show: Longtime KOGO/San Diego producer Jimmy Valentine gets the axe as the Roger Hedgecock Show -- which Valentine has produced for years -- gets set to move from a local broadcast to a national show via Radio America next January. Valentine will be replaced by Brett Winterble as Executive Producer for Hedgecock's new national show which is taking the slot currently occupied at Radio America by Michael Reagan. Winterble was most recently with Mt. Wilson Broadcasting News/Talk simulcast KGIL/Los Angeles-XESURF/Tijuana-San Diego. MUTTERINGS **Did Rush visit the White House? Dined with Bush?
