Should Sirius XM call it a day and try to sell its operation to the highest bidder? Or should Sirius XM forge ahead with its current strategy and hope against hope that everything will be OK? To answer those questions won't be easy. Daily Breeze: Now is the time for radio to do great things. Unfortunately, it won't come from the big guns such as CBS and Clear Channel. It will come from the independents and the smaller groups. So I reissue this challenge to every programmer and owner in the country: Give us a reason to tune in. Make radio fun again. If you build it, they will listen, and the ad revenue will come. Inside Music Media: So, here it is -- the promotion that radio should do (and do fast, before a competitor does it). Giveaway jobs on the air. That's right -- nothing is more valuable today than employment (unfortunately, we know that all too well in the radio business). And don't listen to it on your favorite Classic Rock station because it won't be there either. You'll hear it at halftime on Sunday night's NFL game between the Cowboys and the Redskins. It's yet another sign that the new music exposure platform has totally shattered. Your chances of hearing new music outside of traditional broadcast radio stations continue to grow. Excerpt: KSIQ at 96.1 has an FCC construction permit to move its city of license and its transmitter to Campo. It has recently applied to the FCC to add a 125 watt booster on Mt. San Miguel that would rebeam its 96.1 signal into hard-to-reach areas such as El Cajon and Chula Vista. The main 96.1 transmitter would be transmitting at 25kw, a reduction of its current 50kw power.Karel Fired For Expletetive Tirade (Nov 12, 2008)Karel, a former KFI host that had a talk show on KGO in San Francisco, was fired.Karel had been working weekends and weeknight fill-ins for the station. On November 2nd, during an ABC News report, Karel was heard exclaming an expletetivie-filled tirade saying "f--k G--d--- JOE the G--d--- motherf---ing PLUMBER! I want motherf---ing JOE THE PLUMBER dead." Karel was suspended after the incident, and was fired a week later.

One of rock radio's most enduring brands is being reborn in a twice-a-week, 90-minute show hosted by veteran Rockline personality Bob Coburn. More performances are planned when Dial Global re-launches the show in January. Inside Music Media: LA Radio will do under $1 billion for the first time since 2002. Radio stocks are worth pennies. Audiences decline even though loyalists whip out studies that show how many hours a day people listen. Radio lost the next generation. Need I go through this again? XHDTV-TD To Be on 47 (Nov 11, 2008)Michael Horgan announces on the hdtv.forsandiego.com board that My Network TV affilliate XHDTV from Tecate going to have a digital channel on 47 in 2009. They will be operating on 47.1. XHDTV-DT will be mapped to 49.1. XHDTV-DT won't have to co channel with KJLA-DT from out of Los Angeles. It is expected to be carried on cable systems in the San Diego area.

Thus, the present conundrum. So, in response to their dilemma, the labels are doing what ever red-blooded American business would do -- cutback. On staff. On music discovery. On innovation. Sirius XM is a billion dollars in debt. Neither company by itself or as a combo has made a penny since each were launched in 2001. A new lineup premieres on Wednesday with not much hope that it will ever get out of debt with the current model of servicing that it has. Many similar channels will be merged into one. SDRN won't speculate prematurely, but whatever lineup is released on Wednesday will upset people no matter what. |
