Weird Dream (Aug 23, 2008)

Last night, I dreamt that a teenage nephew of a step brother that I never heard of before invaded my house, rigged my computer so that the desktop icons moved all over the screen, then off of the screen and back again, erased my websites and replaced them with cheat codes written in Fortran for Xbox games, and rerecorded Hannah Montana over my Star Trek DVD collection. What's weird about it? I don't yet own a Star Trek DVD collection in real life.

I had to get rid of him, but then, Willie Aames from Eight is Enough popped into my house and wanted me to zap him an I.D. card so he could buy some beer. I waved my finger at him and hoped that a card would materialize. Nothing. I guess I need to reload my finger with magic. Willie told me that he forgot to watch reruns of Sabrina the Teenage Witch to reload his own magic. I've been watching The Witches of Waverly Place for the magic, but it isn't as effective.

Meanwhile, the teenage nephew was rigging up my XM radio so that it would receive messages from Darth Clear Channel for further instructions. I had enough. I got out my light saber and challenged him to a duel. We fought, but I managed to chop off his arms. You'd think I won? Guess again. Out pops his, um, something between his legs holding a light saber. I showed him a picture of somebody ugly...Tori Spelling at age 35! His light saber sagged and fell off. He disappearred. So did Willie and my house. I found myself on the sidewalk in a neighborhood in the city late at night. Oh no. My mind is playin' tricks on me.

TV Technology: Wilmington Stations to Keep Analog Transmitters Ready for Emergencies. I’ve heard discussions about allowing one or more analog TV stations in a market to remain on the air after the Feb. 17, 2009 transition to provide information on the transition.

Inside Radio: TV has become more splintered than ever. For many years TV viewing was split by just a few stations - but the latest Nielsen data shows television is now divided into the tiniest slices ever, as the gap between radio and TV audience size narrows. The average American home receives 119 channels - an increase of 14% from a year ago. Typically though, only 16 are watched for ten minutes or more a week

Inside Music Media: Radio's Carnac: Many of you ask me what I think the industry will look like in the next five or ten years. It’s always dangerous to predict, but too much fun to ignore. Look back. Kurt Hanson: Does Pandora Have to Die? (Aug 22, 2008)

Excerpts from Kurthanson.com: “MUST PANDORA DIE?” ASKS HANSON: In his blog post at right, RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson writes, “I’ve been talking to several journalists this week about the issue [of Pandora considering shutting down], and the question they always ask me is this: ‘Trying to bankrupt your industry doesn’t make any sense! WHY is SoundExchange doing this?‘ As near as I can read the situation, there are several phenomena at play simultaneously that explain their seemingly-irrational behavior…”

Chris Cantore Answers (Aug 22, 2008)

From Chris Cantore's Myspace Blog:

From Chris in an answer to one of the questions posted on his blog:

"so, here's the deal:

cinco de mayo, 5/5/08, i was presented with a unique opportunity: interactive, new media.

unchartered territory for "the chris cantore show," i agreed to a 3-month "trial."

so there is NO confusion, they were extremely happy with the results. in fact, i was told, together, WE "increased traffic by 44%," broke records on X1TV, slammed the chatroom, and generated "thousands of sign-ups" through the network.

at the end of 3 months, i tried to renegotiate the terms of our "trial"...and, needless to say, it didn't work out.

it was fun. i learned a lot. most importantly, provided my with a forum to reconnect with you.

i wish them nothing but the best. yes, good people in the halls (special nod to andrew/annrae/christian/ramon/diego/edder/javier.)

regarding my next move in broadcasting, hmmm.

i will keep you posted, i promise.

no need to say "thank you," based on your loyalty, i owe you all the thanks.

btw, starting next thursday, 8/28, i will be hosting "tiki thursdays" at the W, between 7 - 9 p.m.

please, stop by, say hello.

End of post.

PC Mag: The Internet Radio Death Watch Pandora Radio is the canary in the coal mine. With about a million listeners every day, Pandora is one of the most successful Internet radio stations on the Web. I'm more of a Slacker fan personally, but Pandora's music-matching technology is among the best in the business. And it generates revenue, perhaps as much as $25 million this year alone. But that isn't enough to pay the royalty fees

Valerie Bertinelli Gets a Sitcom (Aug 22, 2008)

Is the former One Day at a Time sitcom daughter starring in a clone of her past show as a divorced mother of two kids?

According to Variety and other sources, Valerie Bertinelli has signed on to star in a new comedy pilot for TBS from writer and executive producer Dave Caplan. Caplan's credits include TBS's popular sitcom The Bill Engvall Show; two of his shows, George Lopez and The Drew Carey Show, were first-run on ABC.

The sitcom, which doesn't have a name, I suggest "Daugher of One Day at a Time?", centers on a single mother trying to run a business while raising two children.

Bertinelli will also serve as producer.

Should the pilot get picked up, it would be Bertinelli's first sitcom role since the short-lived "Cafe Americain" in the 1993-94 season, and her first regular series role since "Touched by an Angel" went off the air in 2003.

Bertinelli most recently starred in Lifetime's "True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet," which premiered earlier this month. Other recent credits include the TV movies "Claire" and "Finding John Christmas."

KIST-AM gets a CLU (Aug 21, 2008)

KCLU, a four watt NPR station in Santa Barbara whose signal is so weak that it can't penetrate buildings, has purchased a former Clear Channel-owned radio station to boost its signal coverage.

KIST-AM 1340, a 650 watter which went from oldies to sports to talk in the past ten years, is being purchased by California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, which operates KCLU 102.3 in Santa Barbara and part of Montecito, and on 88.3 FM in Ventura. 1340's signal ranges from Goleta and Isla Vista to Rincon (not the Indian tribe in San Diego) in Ventura county. AM 1340 can be heard along the San Diego coastal areas during the daytime.

According to Noozhawk.com, "KCLU plans to begin broadcasting on the AM 1340 station within the next month pending Federal Communications Commission notification. Immediately after the switch, the same KCLU programming will be heard on all three stations. Eventually, the station plans to differentiate some programming to target each region."

USA Today: Martin Wants Broadband Across USA. High-speed Internet access is so important to the welfare of U.S. consumers that America can't afford not to offer it — free of charge — to anybody who wants it, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin says. There's a social obligation in making sure everybody can participate in the next generation of broadband services because, increasingly, that's what people want," he says.

Inside Music Media: There is something seriously wrong when Pandora - arguably one of the most popular Internet streams out there - is close to pulling the plug and shutting down. A million daily listeners and record numbers of iPhone users (and me) are going to be very unhappy. The reason? (read more - Jerry Del Colliano - Inside Music Media)
