Radio Caller Confesser Now Known (Aug 7, 2008)

Way back in November of 2006, we remember the night that one of the strangest things in radio history happened.

Here's a repeat of the story we ran on SDN three days after it aired.

Way back on the date of November 3, 2006, on the syndicated Tom Leykis show, a female caller boasted proudly about killing a one-time fling for not paying child support, then after the talk show host informed her that she broke the law, she hung up the phone.

On the third hour of the Tom Leykis radio show, Tom received a phone call from a listener who was very proud of herself for what she did. She told him the story as proudly as she could, and then he had to point out to her that she wasn't as smart as she thought she was.

Tom, who was broadcasting out of Portland, Oregon, for the live broadcast that day, pointed out that the phone caller might also be a prank phone call, which is also illegal, and says that he will find the caller responsible for the murder confession regardless.

The call seemed to originate from the Phoenix, Arizona area, where Leykis broadcasts his show on a Free FM affilliate, 101.5, over there. The media and the police departments there are working on the case after hearing the replay of the call an hour after it was broadcast so they can tape the call and use it in their hunt for the caller.

Sue from Ahwatukee, Arizona, placed the call shortly after 6pm Phoenix time. In that call, Sue told Tom that she worked with her ex-one night stand in a hospital, and laughed about him being dead. She says that he got her pregnant when she was 19 and had the baby a year later. She went to her lover and told him she was having the baby, but the lover didn't tell her to have the abortion and didn't offer to marry her. When she hed the baby, her lover refused to give her child support, so she went to family court to have his wages garnished from his paycheck to pay for child support. He got angry and quit his job so that she couldn't get child support out of his paycheck. She got really mad, so she went over to him and asked him to pay her the money. He refused, so she shot him in the heart and killed him.

She told him she was a nurse and knew where to aim the gun to kill him, then laughed again.

Tom then asked her how often they let her make calls from prison, assuming that she was doing time, but she said that she got away with it.

Tom asked how, and she told him that she lied to the police that he shot himself because he was drunk.

Tom then got really serious. After getting the facts straight, he then told her that she went to trial, of course. She then replied, no, she didn't go to trial. When she lied to the police about the death, the police believed her and she got away with it.

Tom told Sue that he's not an attorney, but he told her some bad news. Since she never went on trial, she just confessed on a national talk show about committing a murder.

Sue then told Tom that they would have to prove it and that her lover had been cremated.

Tom told her that we got her confession on tape (as all of the talk shows are taped) and she has just confessed.

Sue then said that people call up and make up stories all the time.

Tom told Sue that his show has an 800 number, and when a caller calls into the radio show, because the show pays for the incoming call, they have the caller's phone number.

Sue told Tom that it's not her cell phone.

Tom tells her that it doesn't matter because the police departments are going to find her, and when they find her, she will go on trial.

She abruptly hangs up the phone.

Tom told the screener Dean to call the Ahwatukee police department about the caller. He tells the audience that they're going to send her to prison forever. Tom was livid about Sue for proudly confessing a murder she thought she could get away with, until she realized that she made a serious mistake in confessing about it on a national talk show where hundreds of tape machines and millions of listeners are witnessing what she was saying on the radio that night.

Tom says that if it's not her cell phone, the police department will find out who is registered with the cell phone and who Sue is.

Tom is offering a ransom for any information leading up to the arrest and conviction of Sue the caller. He offered $5,000 out of his own pocket as ransom and immediately afterwards, two callers offered to add to his ransom.

Now that should go under the Stupid Criminal file. People are stupid, and once again, we've proven it.

End of Archived Story

Tom Leykis posted a link to the long awaited update on the status of the police's efforts to apprehend and charge the female radio caller with murder.

Read the complete story in the East Valley Tribune.

Excerpts: "Phoenix police are set to seek charges in the 7-year-old death of an Ahwatukee Foothills man — originally written off as a suicide — after a woman claiming to be the dead man’s girlfriend said on a national radio talk show that she killed him.

"Detectives have continued to work on the case that drew attention on Nov. 3, 2006, when nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Tom Leykis took a call on his live show from a woman claiming she got away with murder. Police have linked the call to the March 2001 death of Tortsen Rockwood.

"Phoenix police Sgt. Joel Tranter would not release the name of the woman on Wednesday, but did provide police report numbers and information about court records that police say are relevant to the case. Tranter said an arrest won’t be made, but that police will take the case to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office as soon as Thursday seeking charges.

"The trail has led to Megan Suzanne Vice, a 30-year-old El Mirage woman, according to court records. Phoenix police filed a “reasonable cause statement” showing that they believe Vice shot and killed Rockwood, her live-in boyfriend, in March 2001, while their 2-year-old son was in another room. The court record shows that Vice told police the couple argued about Rockwood hitting her son and that she thought Rockwood shot himself.

"Vice could not be reached for comment."

"Tranter said the woman faces charges of first-degree murder and obstructing a criminal investigation, the latter for filing a false police report. He said that the woman won’t be arrested because of circumstantial evidence and admissions the woman made to police.

"“This is an extremely unusual case,” Tranter said. “It’s not unusual, however, not to book someone but seek charges. We’ve determined that this woman is not a flight risk.”"

During the November 3rd episode when Megan called Tom during his live broadcast from Portland, Oregon, Megan said she was a nurse at the same hospital where her former boyfriend worked. They had a child when she was 19 in about 1997. When her ex-boyfriend quit his job so he wouldn't have to pay child support anymore, Megan said she tried to ask him why, but he wouldn't listen to her. She then told Tom that she shot her ex-boyfriend dead.

She told Tom that she was a nurse and knew where to aim, which was his heart, and used his gun to shoot him.
