Radio Time Warp (July 19, 2008)

Just Thursday afternoon, I tuned in 100.3 from Los Angeles and heard David Bowie's hit "Let's Dance."

25 years ago that month, I tuned in 100.3 from Los Angeles and heard David Bowie's hit "Let's Dance."

I felt like I turned on a time machine and I almost felt that the station was going to ID itself as KIQQ like it was back in 1983.

Halloran on Vacation (July 19, 2008)

greetings people of earth.

as is the norm on this planet we live on, we humans need to take a break every once in a while.

so...

i am taking a vacation.

a well deserved vacation with the family, to go see ancient walled cities, some of which lie beyond what used to be called "the iron curtain".

my father took me to this place when i was my son declan's age.

when my father died late last year i thought of all the places he took me as a youngster and thought my kids might enjoy these type of trips as well.

i do realize that this might blow up in my face, "dad where's the starbucks?" or "daddy, why don't they speak english?"

maybe it won't be like that at all... "daddy, i wanna move here!"

i am hoping that it will make a lasting impact on my children's thoughts about the world and their place in it.

while i am away i have entrusted my air-shift to none other than garett michaels. i trust he will entertain you as much as you expect he should, plus it's a good chance to call him up and ask where he's been hiding. (he really isn't/wasn't hiding.)

also...on the weekends we wanted to do something super special for the coup d'etat shows that i normally host.......drumroll please!

joe strummer will be filling in on that shift for 8 weeks in a row.

"joe strummer?" you ask as you re-read that last line....

yes joe strummer, THEE joe strummer.

joe used to do a radio show on the bbc world service, they have been archived and now, we want you to hear them.

so starting at 6pm on sunday the 20th of july, for 8 weeks joe will blow your mind.

i was lucky enough to have him on my radio show a few times, back in 1984 and again in 1999.

he was always so cool to interview and you will hear his style of coolness emanate from this frequency soon.

see you when i get back.

love to you and yours.

TV Technology: Dallas/Fort Worth Station to Test Analog Switch-Off. On July 23 between 7 and 9 p.m., TXA 21 engineers will switch off the station’s analog transmitter for approximately 15 seconds.

Kurt Hanson: Attorney David Oxenford writes that a new U.S. Copyright Office notice may open up webcasters to yet another royalty. The CO has issued a notice that non-interactive streaming "could" fall under Section 115 of the Copyright Act, which involves a royalty paid to music publishers for the reproduction of music. However, Oxenford notes that the CO recognizes the issue, "could be very controversial, and states that it takes no position as to the value of the Section 115 right that it finds to exist. That would be left to the Copyright Royalty Board." Read more in today's issue of RAIN: Radio And Internet Newsletter, online at http://www.kurthanson.com.

Inside Music Media: I've got some ideas for broadcasters, new media companies and record labels with regard to the growth industries of Internet and mobile content. 1. Don't confuse a terrestrial radio station's Internet stream with Internet radio. Young listeners aren't confused

How To Really Make Money (July 18, 2008)

Spam I would like to see that really works (if you can find a way to fund number 2).

1. Graduate from high school.

2. Go to a real college (not a trade or community) to get a Masters degree.

3. Apply for a high paying job.

More Ways To Save Money (July 18, 2008)

From Rich:

For Students:

Avoid getting a ride from parents to school. It wastes gas and doesn't help your health.

Avoid taking the bus. Yes, I know...The media would have you believe that the bus or trolley is the 'gas alternative. What do you think they run on? Who do you think will ultimately pay for that? It, too, doesn't do your health any good.

What alternative is there that encourages good health AND isn't effected by gas prices? There are MANY!!

Skateboard, Bicycling, and WALKING...

Get to know your community and nature by taking a human-powered trip.

Mel Phillips: Radio needs a lift after that 10% decline in local radio sales in June and here it is - another recent study showing radio as the major influence in the discovery of new music. Jupiter Research conducted an online study of 2,134 music users that showed that 63% of those reached named radio as the number one method of discovering new music (read more - Mel Phillips)

Ars Technica: Save Christian Radio opposes rules that radio stations must more carefully keep track of their public affairs programming and make this record available even to "those who do not share Gospel values." SCR condemns a proposal that stations must locate their main studio within their signal area, warning that the plan would "force many Christian stations to relocate their main studio facilities." And it rejects the "physical presence" rue, which it protests would affect stations where "all the programming at that time is delivered by satellite" (read more - Matthew Lasar - Ars Technica)

Inside Music Media: While radio was out regionalizing and nationalizing its music, the next generation won control of today's technology and they have become the djs. Where a radio jock might have told their listeners what was "hot" in previous times, they have no credibility with the next generation. Gen Y has Facebook, MySpace, Pandora - and, of course, Limewire - the better to steal music. But, radio had it right in some ways back in the payola days of the 50's (read more - Jerry Del Colliano - Inside Music Media)

Kurt Hanson: Pandora is currently the 4th most popular application for the Apple iPhone and reportedly streamed 3.3 million tracks to the device this weekend alone. 200,000 stations have reportedly been created from iPhones, while users tune in every 2 seconds and listen for an average of one hour per day. Pandora founder Tim Westergren says this has "broken the dam" for Internet radio and sees other ramifications as well.

Randy Dotinga: Ring, ring! Wacko on Line One

From Hilary (July 16, 2008)

I'm writing to inform you that you are owed $47,303,900.76 by the government of Bailiwick of Guernsey (Google it) - congratulations! All you have to do is email your credit card and bank account numbers to Hilary, c/o FM 94/9... ahh, I kid! Someday I'd love to be a spam copywriter. But that's another story...

Really, I just wanted to drop you a line to introduce myself and to say thanks for welcoming me into the FM 94/9 fold. I'm Hilary, and since Anya has headed out on the great rock and roll adventure, I'm your new midday DJ around these parts. Yikes! Even typing it feels good. (Oh, and you'll definitely want to check out Anya's album when it comes out. It's so good. You might need to buy some diapers to go with your first listening experience. Hey, I'm a new mom, I live in the world of diapers...don't hold it against me.)

So, well, I've been on the radio here in San Diego for about twelve years now - my first almost-ten were spent on 91X, and before that I got my start on a lil' college station called KUCI. My big commercial radio break was when I landed a punk rock specialty show in 1994 on KNAC in Long Beach. That's right - hitting the big time with the Wednesday nights at midnight shift. Who was listening to a punk rock show in L.A. at that hour? Convicts and addicts, that about sums it up. Good times!

So that's my history, I guess - but the important thing is, I'm pinching myself because holy cats! Did I really just get hired to work at 94/9? This station has so much integrity and the people are so damn cool and friendly and passionate about the music - I keep waiting for someone to run into the studio and go, "Just kidding! Your new job is really harvesting geoducks, and you start tomorrow!" I'm still getting used to this new reality of playing tunes on FM 94/9 every day before Halloran storms into the studio with a half eaten lunch, a chocolate bar and his motorcycle helmet.

In all seriousness, it's hard to find the words to really express how honored I am to be a part of this station. Never in my career have I experienced a station that truly cares about what you think, how you feel and what you want to hear, like FM 94/9 does. As much as this letter is a chance for me to introduce myself to you, it's also a chance to say that I can't do it without your involvement. So bring on the requests, bizarre phone calls and Desert Island Discs.

I'm so happy to be here and can't wait to get to know all the FM 94/9 Insiders better. So please reach out: hilary@fm949sd.com and/or 570-1949 M-F, 9am - 2pm. What are your favorite bands? What new stuff are you into? What do you do with your days here in SD? What's your sign? Break it down for me! Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hilary - FM 94/9 Middays

Kurt Hanson: The 3G iPhone's slew of Internet radio applications look to be the hottest add-on's for the new device. After successfully testing these applications while driving, CBS News' Larry Magid sees the iPhone's Net radio capabilities as a serious threat to terrestrial and satellite radio. Without aid of Wimax or in-car hi-speed Internet, webcasts are untethered from the PC--a development which could be "incredibly disruptive," as Magid points out.

Comments: Why KGB Sucks Explained (July 15, 2008)

Read and post comments here:

From 136kgb: I found that rather amusing, but not surprising. But he says in there that his jocks are perfect (including him!). Has he ever listened to his own show or even worse his own commercials?

From Jay F: I'm not a fan of voicetracking, but I would take the side of the PD here. The letter writer thinks the world should revolve around their personal tastes. It sounds like they want to shift KGB to something similar to FREE FM, we saw how well that station did.

From Garrett: Live and local listener interaction is important. That said, I wonder how many average listeners really notice the difference so long as they can hear their usual dose of Eric Clapton or the Beatles? I suspect, beyond us radio geeks, most people just don't care.

From Bob Hudson: I was driving around this afternoon and heard Jim McInnes doing a traffic report on Jack-FM and then punched over to KGB to hear Dreck - oops Brick - and I could only think: this epitomizes what is wrong with radio.

Enough About KGB. Switch to FM 94/9 (July 15, 2008)

Monday, Hilary Chambers joined FM 94/9 doing middays from 9am-2pm. She has spent almost a decade in San Diego. She replaced Anya Marina, who stepped back to part-time duties while focusing on her music career. On Friday's midday show, Anya introduced Hilary to the FM 94/9 audience. Hilary commented that the way FM 94/9 jocks do the shows are different than the way the jocks at her former station (Star 94.1) did. The jocks at FM 94/9 work without a net, doing their announcements completely live (with perhaps a slight tape delay to catch any bad words that slip out so they can be edited out before it airs), whereas her former station used voicetracked, or "live", announcements between sets. The songs and commercials on FM 94/9 are all queued up by humans, whereas at Star 94.1, a computer does all the work. So Hilary, hope your skills are up to par because FM 94/9 is the real deal, so get yourself under the hood and make a sweat working the machines.

Inside Music Media: Talented radio people shouldn't be sitting around trying to find ways to shave more expenses off their programming. They should already have that ammunition ready to fight competitors, new media and mobile. The problem is not the Internet - it's a challenge (albeit a big one). The problem is not the next generation -- after all, radio virtually ignored Gen Y while owners were stuffing more stations in their clusters and the next generation simply moved on (read more - Jerry Del Colliano - Inside Music Media)

MichiGuide: It used to be that a radio fan like myself would drive the other passengers crazy turning the radio knob to try and listen to as much local flavor via the radio as possible. But in recent times, much of that is gone, replaced by a sound that is about the same no matter if you're in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, or many of the smaller towns in between - Get off the interstate nearly anywhere and those plazas are filled with the same stores and restaurants as at home. So instead of hearing ads from local stores on the radio when you're out of town, it's the same jingles and voices pitching the same things (read more - MIke Austerman - MichiGuide)
