Gary Lycan: A slew of traffic reporters is silenced by layoffs as Clear Channel downsizes its Orange County-based AirWatch operation, which provides traffic reports to 42 stations – Mike Baez (Taylor), Barbara Brooks, Jim Curran, Walt Darocha(Jackson), Alan LaGreen, Sharon Reardon, and, at this writing, Mike Nolan, the "KFI in the Sky" the past 20 years

Inside Music Media: From Jerry Del Colliano -- Our society is addicted to cell phones -- and smart phones such as the Blackberry or iPhone. I reported what happened recently when I assigned my USC students a project to go cold turkey for two days -- they suffered high anxiety and couldn't wait to connect again to their phones and resume text messaging. Simple cell phones are to today what portable radios were in the 60's. And what smart phone devices will be to tomorrow

Lee Abrams: Rediscovering my roots. That’s what the Led Zeppelin Channel is doing for me, as is Bob Dylan’s show and Tom Petty’s show. With The Zeppelin Channel, I have really gained a new realization of why I am so enamored with the 1968-1975 era of British Rock. Pink Floyd, early Yes, Jethro Tull, the Who and others all shared a level of intellect that is rare to hear these days in rock. The rediscovery included the cerebral lyrics. Sometimes you are so bombarded by the might of Zeppelins music that you miss the fact that lyrically they were on another planet—in a good way. It WAS rock n roll poetry

Inside Music Media: From Jerry Del Colliano -- The RIAA has filed a brief in an Arizona U.S. District Court against two average citizens (Jeffrey and Pamela Howell) who committed the dastardly crime of ripping their CD collection to MP3s so they could enjoy them around the house and perhaps on their iPods. The RIAA is also alleging that the Howell's put their ripped music on file sharing networks -- perhaps a trusted trump card for them in their case

FMQB: Does the RIAA now believe that ripping songs from a CD is illegal? According to documents from an RIAA lawsuit, the organization calls MP3 files converted from a CD "unauthorized." Switched.com and many other tech Web sites are up in arms over this, as it goes against a 2005 court case, where the RIAA said that digital copies for personal use is protected by law

Duran Duran Now Podsafe (Dec 13, 2007)

Ariel Publicity has announced on her blog that "Duran Duran is now part of the Cyber PR family, and we are thrilled."

While not exactly The Beatles in their day, Duran Duran's videos like "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Rio" took the artform of filming videos into another direction, and gained a huge following for about two years. There was no truth to the rumor that Duran Duran attempted to film a video on the planet Mercury. It would have been a hot one.

As today's radio continues to shun the group, Duran Duran continues on as a veteran pop modern rock group as they play various venues and put out new recordings every now and then.

I do have a favorite member of Duran Duran. Roger Taylor. Why? Because he shares the exact same birthday as I do: April 26, 1960. So it's no wonder that I could consider him as a birthday twin, or a cosmic twin.

So as the year 2008 rises above the horizon, we'll be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the group becoming popular on the charts as I play some of their hits on my new radio podcast show titled "The Mad Music ____ Zone," debuting the weekend of January 5, 2008.

On "Zone", I will play a segment of songs in each show that is definitely not demented or funny, but stuff I enjoy hearing, including Duran Duran, plus other artists that deserve to be heard, but radio forgets to play.

More on the "Zone" later.

Artist of Note from Ariel Publicity (Dec 13, 2007)

The Ugli Stick. Album Title: Nostoi. Formed in 2000, the timing of The Ugli Stick couldn't have been more prophetic: a new millennium to usher in a new style of music. And just like the music, the fans are equally diverse and dedicated. Playing nearly 250 shows a year, Ugli Stick fans of all ages and from all backgrounds pack venues to see the dynamic and engaging live stage shows.

Happy Hare: I receive E-mails while I am on the air and have to come up with spontaneous, amusing answers. Here are examples of the broad range I have to cover. An E-mail asking me my opinion about the general subject of living together. This says, Dear Hare, a fine man wants me to live with him for a while to see if we're compatible. What do you think? I replied - First, I think it’s none of my business but generally, I have a better way to judge compatibility. When you live together, you are often on your best behavior. Don’t risk the mutual embarrassment of a ... (read more - www.HappyHareOnline.com)

Inside Music Media: From Jerry Del Colliano -- I can't take another day of hearing bad news from my friends in the radio industry who have been let go by Clear Channel in the latest massive clearance sale of top executives in advance of taking the company private. Forget that it's happening at Christmas. Clear Channel apparently has. They say if you don't laugh, you'll cry. These fat cats are wreaking havoc on radio stations and on the lives of many talented and dedicated people who deserve better than a pink slip for Christmas. So, I've come up with a parody called the "Tickle Me Clear Channel"
