Monday at 3pm (on Nov 12, 2007)

...is when we should be in the middle of our observance of Veterans Day.

"Veterans Day is an American holiday honoring military veterans. (Since November 11 falls on a Sunday, Monday is when we will observe this holiday with school, government, and business closings that are normally closed on Sunday.)

"Veterans Day is both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states; it is celebrated on the same day as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

"Veterans Day is largely intended to thank veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to United States national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty."

So instead of paying attention to some corporate radio monster who's gotten as much free press as Hannah Montana (who too is too corporate for my tastes and I agree with Halloran that Interpol is better than her), pay some attention to our living veterans and do something to thank and honor all of our veterans who served honorably in the military. Acknowledge that their contributions to our national secrurity are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

Thank you to our veterans for helping to keep our country free, to help liberate the people living under regimes who don't recognize humanity, to help the other countries keep peace and to assist when under distress, and to help keep our dreams of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness alive for our generations to come as well as for our ancestors from generations past.

When possible, just do something for your neighboring veteran. Buy them a tankfull of gasoline. Get them a meal. Give a gift certificate for them to buy a toy for their child that's age appropriate. Do their yardwork. Change their oil. Pay for a car repair job. Treat them to a pizza. Anything is fine. Buy them a David Tanny Stupid Audio CD from davidtanny.com as a present. Get them a Osama Bin Laden dart board. Anything to thank a veteran.

Randy Dotinga: Veteran local disc jockey Delana Bennett may soon be the hardest working radio personality in town.     FMQB: musicFIRST Suggests Lower Performance Royalty Rates For Some. Reports say that the organization is proposing flat rates for small commercial stations, non-comms and college stations.

    RadioInk: Free Radio Alliance: 'Don't Be Fooled' By MusicFIRST Proposal. The Free Radio Alliance says "don't be fooled" by MusicFIRST's proposal of flat performance royalties for small and noncommercial broadcasters.

    Radio and Records: Atsinger: Salem Will Sell Underperforming Stations. Christian- and family-themed Salem Communications will sell its underperforming radio stations, if it determines the stations can't be improved enough in their current formats or through a format change, to achieve a better bottom line, Salem CEO Edward Atsinger said. In San Diego, Salem owns KCBQ and KPRZ.

    All Access reports that within two months LIVE365 slipped two positions among the top music sites in minutes per visitor, per month, going from 23.1 minutes to 16.5 minutes in SEPTEMBER, according to COMSCORE MEDIA METRIX, writes MARKETINGCHARTS. Meanwhile, CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO's ONLINE MUSIC & RADIO (CCOMR) network maintained the second-place spot for the fourth consecutive month, at 18.6 minutes per visitor, behind MTV's 19.3 minutes. CCOMR is fifth in monthly uniques among music sites, according to the COMSCORE data, behind YAHOO MUSIC, MYSPACE MUSIC, AOL MUSIC and MTV.COM. Among radio broadcaster sites, CLEAR CHANNEL remains the outright leader with 9,800 monthly unique visitors, according to NIELSEN/NETRATINGS; the next closest is CBS with 3,000

    Hear 2.0: From Mark Ramsey -- As a San Diego resident, I recently complained about the lack of the specific information on local radio I need to know about a coming wildfire, especially commercial radio. Today I see an article on this very topic: "Traditional Media Evolves for Wildfire Coverage, But Hyper-Local Still Lacking." Yes, radio - commercial radio - must do a much better job of the hyper-local in order to be relevant as an emergency source in the years to come - assuming, of course, the power doesn't go out and all other options disappear

    Happy Hare: To a man in his early 40’s, and just reaching boomerdom, “Oldies” is a word that denotes approaching senility. It’s bad enough that his prostate is beginning to falter. He doesn’t have to be reminded. And certainly, no woman wants to be associated with the word “Oldies.” The word “Oldies” passed muster among maturing teens as they hit their 20’s and 30’s, because they were the ones who named it, so that made it okay - then. Actually the title “Boomer Radio” doesn’t cover it. What’s looming on the musical horizon is far broader than the 42-60 boomer demos. Top 10-40 times have a’changed.

    RadioInk: MusicFIRST Proposes Flat Royalties For Some Broadcasters. Radio Ink has obtained a document the MusicFIRST Coalition -- a group formed to push for performance royalties from radio -- is circulating on Capitol Hill, proposing flat royalties for small commercial stations, noncoms, and college stations.

    Inside Radio: Glenn Beck signs $50 million contract. The Premiere Radio talk host signs a new five year contract that makes him radio's third-highest paid talent, behind Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. The New York Times says the $10 million a year deal includes a combination of salary and profit-sharing from syndication. Premiere Radio says Beck's show has seen its adults 25-54 ratings grow 16% in the last year.

    DOJ could clear XM-Sirius merger this week. Word out of Washington is Justice Department antitrust chief General Thomas Barnett will sign-off on the deal by month's end - possibly as soon as this week. That's despite a staff recommendation advising the merger be rejected. If the DOJ approves the deal, it would give the satellite companies momentum at the FCC.

    HD interference becomes a federal case. WYSL, Rochester, NY owner Bob Savage has filed a formal complaint with the FCC alleging his station is suffering "continuous" interference from a Boston station - 353 miles away. His filing says the "IBOC hiss" is "likely to cause loss of advertising revenue" saying, in essence, "WYSL has been condemned to "daytimer status.

    Don Imus on TV? The Tennessean reports that an announcement of a deal between RFD-TV and Don Imus for a TV simulcast of his new Citadel radio show may come "possibly as soon as this week." The paper says that the deal is expected to boost RFD-TV from its present 30 million homes to 50 million homes by the end of 2008. RFD-TV President Patrick Gottsch would not confirm that a deal is imminent but says that the network is in talks with the talk host and that verbal agreements to add the network to systems operated by Comcast and Time Warner have beem reached with deals expected to be signed within the week.

    Disney Channel's Hannah Montana is coming to the San Diego Sports Arena on Thursday, November 8th. Just in case you haven’t heard, it’s one of the hottest concert tickets of the season (sorry Corn on the Cob concert or whatever it is in dementialand), with every show selling out in mere minutes, all across the country.
