Flat Buns a Hit (September 25, 2007)

The Carls Jr. commercial spot (no, I did not get paid to write this article and I don't care to eat their artery-clogging burgers), "Flat Buns," which first got radio and television exposure in late August, has not only generated a heated discussion on newspaper and Internet forums, it's also a hit song.

The Mad Music Dementia Top 20 radio show has been ranking "Flat Buns" for the past three weeks during its weekly funny music countdown show as it's apparent that people are hungry for this catchy novelty song that's a commercial jingle.

Carls' Jr. has created what has to be one of the most successful advertising campaigns of recent history with a catchy jingle, a sense of humor, an ear for a takeoff on another hip hop song (think Big Butts by Sir Mix-a-Lot), a way to offend the humorless twits who don't like funny music, and a hit song on the countdown show.

The ad is generally aimed at men ages 18-34, who are the most likely demographic to purchase hamburgers. What do men like? Hot women. This "Flat Buns" spot is hitting on all four cylinders.

Another ad that's been getting some juice is the Jack in the Box spot where Jack is pushing their sirloin burgers while making potshots at another chain that is offering angus beef as offering something that came from a part of the cattle that should be gotten rid of first (the anus). Sirloin is a cut of beef. Angus is a breed of cattle.

Definition: an angus is a cow belonging to a shorthaired, black, hornless breed of beef cattle that originally came from the Aberdeen region of Scotland. Canadian term: Aberdeen Angus.

So, that's the beef about flat buns.
