Aztecs Radio Team Announced (Aug 31, 2007)

Two broadcasting veterans are in the Aztecs radio booth!

Ted Leitner and Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton are teaming up to bring you play-by-play coverage of the SDSU Aztecs football team for the upcoming season, which begins a few days away!

Aztec Sports Properties, a Learfield Sports' property, and Clear Channel Broadcasting announced Thursday that Ted Leitner and Lee Hamilton will serve as the broadcast team for the upcoming 2007 San Diego State football season. The pair can be heard on AM 600 KOGO, the new radio home of Aztec athletics. (as well as on kogo.com)

Leitner continues his role as play-by-play announcer, signing a five-year deal to remain as the voice of both Aztec football and men's basketball. Hamilton will provide football color commentary this season, while working as on-air talent at both KOGO and XTRA Sports Radio (Los Angeles).

"It is very exciting to have two people of this caliber in the same booth at the same time," said SDSU Director of Athletics Jeff Schemmel. "Aztec fans will benefit by having two of the premier announcers in San Diego calling our games."

A legendary sports personality, Leitner is one of the most recognizable media figures in San Diego, where he has served as the voice of the Aztecs, Chargers and Padres on radio and television. The Oklahoma State graduate has been a part of SDSU broadcasts as far back as 1978, and his most recent stint includes working the last two Aztec football and three men's basketball campaigns.

Hamilton has also been a mainstay in the San Diego radio community, calling both San Diego State football and San Diego Chargers games. He has broadcasted games for USC, Arizona State and the Seattle Seahawks and began his career calling college basketball, minor league baseball and hockey contests, as well as playing host to several sports talk shows.

"We are thrilled to have these two veteran announcers together for the upcoming football season," said Bob Bolinger, vice president and market manager for Clear Channel San Diego.

In addition to Leitner and Hamilton, Mike Costa returns for his second stint as sideline reporter for all Aztec football home and away games, having served a similar role from 2002-04.

This past March, Aztec Sports Properties and Clear Channel Broadcasting in San Diego, reached a five-year agreement to make AM 600 KOGO the Aztecs' flagship station beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. KOGO is the highest rated AM station in the San Diego market and will air all SDSU football and men's basketball games, in addition to weekly coach's shows and 15 additional live Aztec sporting events.

San Diego State opens its 2007 football campaign on Saturday, Sept. 8, when it travels to Seattle, Wash., and Qwest Field for the first-ever meeting with Washington State beginning at 4 p.m. PT.

San Diego State Athletics Moves to AM 600 KOGO (Aug 31, 2007)

Five-year deal puts Aztec Athletics on top AM station in San Diego

Aztec Sports Properties, the Division of Learfield Sports that holds multi-media rights for San Diego State University Athletics, has signed an agreement that will make Clear Channel Broadcasting in San Diego and AM 600 KOGO the radio home of Aztec athletics. The five-year agreement will begin with the 2007-08 academic school year.

AM 600 KOGO, the highest rated AM station in the San Diego market, will air all San Diego State football and men’s basketball games, and weekly coaches shows from September through March. KOGO’s signal stretches from north of Santa Barbara to south of Tijuana. In addition, Clear Channel will showcase 15 additional live sporting events, including baseball and women’s basketball games.

“We are pleased that Learfield has been able to put together a new radio deal for San Diego State,” San Diego State Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel said. “Having our football and men’s basketball games and coaches shows all on one station and to have that be the highest rated AM station in the market gives us a great opportunity to better serve our Aztec fan base. In addition, Clear Channel’s commitment to provide coverage to additional sports, as well as its ability to help promote San Diego State athletics to a variety of demographics, will help our entire athletic program grow.”

“We are proud and privileged to be the new home of the Aztecs and begin a strong new partnership with SDSU,” Clear Channel Vice President and Marketing Manager Bob Bolinger said. “We know the Aztecs are committed to a winning program and we are committed to providing the best college sports broadcast in the country for the fans, the alumni and the community.”

San Diego State has partnered with Clear Channel the past three years to play host to the annual KGB SkyShow event in conjunction with an Aztec football game. The results have been successful as the SkyShow event has accounted for three of the five largest home crowds in school history.

“We have worked with Clear Channel on other initiatives and they have a proven and exceptional reach in the San Diego marketplace,” said Steve Becvar, General Manager of Aztec Sports Properties. “It’s important to be creative and find ways to grow our fan base and the Clear Channel partnership will allow us to do that.”

AM 600 KOGO, San Diego’s News and Talk Station, is owned by Clear Channel Communications. Clear Channel Communications is a global leader in out-of-home advertising and entertainment. The company owns radio and television stations, outdoor advertising displays, produces live entertainment productions and owns venues in 65 countries, including throughout the United States. In San Diego, Clear Channel owns a total of six radio stations in addition to AM 600 KOGO: KGB-FM (101.5), KIOZ-FM (Rock 105.3), KMYI-FM (STAR 94.1), KHTS-FM (Channel 933), KUSS-FM (US 95.7 FM) and KLSD-AM (AM 1360).
