Top 10 San Diego Radio Turkeys (Aug 16, 2007)

What were the ten worst San Diego radio formats in recent memory?

What I mean by worst, I mean, a radio station that plays mostly boring music instead of playing merely bad music such as The Macarena and the Crazy Frog.

It's getting harder to make a top ten worst San Diego radio station list nowadays because all over the dial, there's just too many to leave out, so, let's limit ourselves to the top 10 San Diego radio turkeys of today.

And here they are in order of unlistenability from the 10th-worst to the worst.

10. Star 94.1 - the hot AC music mix of today is lacking in depth and warmth. Music for the most part is forgettable.

9. Rock 105.3 - this Clear Channel owned station is nowhere near the peak of its performance since the days when it was once an independent Rock 102.1 Oceanside some 15 years ago. What's with all the noise? Why not play some quality rock and roll?

8. KYXY 96.5 - soft and relaxing. Unfortunately, that's not my idea of such.

7. Magic 92.5 - UPDATE THE PLAYLIST!!!! Overplayed old music gets old fast. Not for long-term listening.

6. Channel 93.3 - this is one of the longest-lasting pop stations in San Diego behind the streak of the 60s-70s hit machine KCBQ 1170. Unfortunately, this station scares away the older listeners with unlistenable MTV pop that's supposed to be aimed for the teens and young adults, which are the prime demographics for listening to iPod players.

5. KGB 101.5 - forget this clunker. Subscribe to XM radio and listen to Deep Tracks on channel 40 and you get a great idea what KGB would have sounded like if they bothered to grow along with us.

4. Blazin 98.9 - light years behind the times. Just hip hop music?

3. Z90 90.3 - light years behind the times. Just hip hop music?

2. Free-FM 103.7 - this defunct FM talker station could have been better if they a) hired better talkers, b) dumped Adam Carolla when Danny Bonaduce was hired, c) told Dave and Jeff to not talk crudely during the daytime, d) played rock and roll on the weekends, and e) promoted their station on the broadcast TV stations.

And the #1 worst radio station in San Diego?

1. Sophie 103.7 - CBS Radio couldn't have done worse than to put on a format that is already well represented in San Diego on other sticks on town. They could have gone after Channel 933 with a top 40 CHR format, but instead, we get this ripoff of KPRI, 91X, FM 94/9, and Star.

And now, the Top 5 San Diego Radio Stations (Aug 16, 2007)

Why five? Because I can't find 10 stations to listen to!

5. KPRI 102.1 - all they need is to harden up their imaging.

4. KSDS 88.3 - traditional jazz is a great way to relax.

3. Jack 100.7 - can be a turkey at times when it plays Alicia Keys and a discoized KISS song from 1979.

2. FM 94/9 - reggae on Sunday mornings, Halloran in the afternoons.

and the #1 best radio station in San Diego?

1. 91X - it took four years to do the job, and two since they went independent of Clear Channel, but, except for the occasional Korn noise like 94/9, it is San Diego's most listenable radio station that you can get without an Internet connection.
