Oldies Returns to FM...For Two Hours! (June 23, 2007)

At 3pm right after Dennis Miller ended, and hundreds of spots about some lawyer show on Saturday afternoons, and right before the Tom Leykis show was supposed to begin...

BOOM!

103.7 Free FM has been blown up! In it's place. K-Surf 103.7, playing oldies from the 60s and 70s. Art Michaels was the deejay. Right when we were just getting into the format, faster than you can say "Build Me Up, Buttercup..."

BOOM!

Then Switches to Sophie @ 103.7 (June 23, 2007)

The station has flipped formats after two hours. This was the shortest time ever for a radio format in San Diego's history. So the whole thing was a stunt. Yikes!

What do we get?

Sophie @ 103.7.

Website is at http://www.radiosophie.com/

Talk about a chick name for a radio handle. I cringed a bit when I heard a female name. Sounds like a station that would play records by Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, and Mariah Carey. Instead of that, it played a whole lot of songs from some kind of indie genre that I just can't recognize at all.

The call letters remain KSCF-FM. The oldies "K-SURF 103.7" was just a smokescreen stunt to get people to talk about the impending format switch, but who guessed that K-Surf Oldies wasn't going to be the desired format that would fit a gaping hole in the needs for San Diego?

Sophie is a AAA-Hot AC (whatever that means) hybrid. The new format launched with Jack Johnson's "Upside Down" as the first tune. I thought that this song was a bit new for the oldies format. Other initial artists include Corinne Bailey Rae, INXS, Snow Patrol, and Fall Out Boy.

Their slogan? "Now. New. Next."

After listening to Sophie for an hour, and hearing nothing I can relate to, I flipped it off and back to my CD-R player in my car. This station doesn't seem to have any kind of direction. So many songs that I heard are similar to what I hear on 91X, 94.1, 94.9, and 102.1 that this new format doesn't seem to have what it takes to survive. We have too many adult contemporary-ish formats in San Diego as it is today with KYXY, Star, KIFM, urban-leaning Magic, Jack-FM, KPRI, and teen-leaning Channel.

In any case, gone are Jeff and Dave, the midmorning show hosts, the syndicated Adam Carolla with his co-host Danny Bonaduce, Tom Leykis, and Dennis Miller, and a whole bunch of forgettable weekend shows that I suspect are mostly brokered such as lawyer and financial advice shows.

In a related story, 101.5 Free FM got blown up with a stunt with all Paris Hilton songs, and at 5:05pm Friday, the new format was even worse than the stunt it replaced. "The New 101.5 Jamz, Blazin' The Valley's Hitz And Hip Hop." That's one station I'll never listen to next time I visit Phoenix.

What 103.7 Should Have Become? (Jun 23, 2007)

Dance CHR and pop electronica hybrid. That's what San Diego needs! With Internet radio being threatened to go out of business, thanks to the asshole CRB organization, we'll be left without any dance radio stations to listen to on the Internet. I figure that 103.7 could have filled the void with a Groove 103.7 format or something similar to the spirit of the modern dance genre.

Instead, we get a chick version of 91X. No thanks.

Complaints (Jun 23, 2007)

Going to Tom Leykis's website, readers are posting complaints on the format changes of 101.5 and 103.7 that happened this week.

From a post on blowmeuptom.com:

From Chambers: "What the hell is this crap. I tuned in to enjoy flash friday and it turns out to be some girl based station called Sophie FM? What can we do to A)get our Free FM back or B) get leykis back on a different station?"

From riccismiles: "CBS is wimpy wimpy wimpy.. the radio station they put on in San Diego is made for dreamers! I turned on the station today to hear Leykis and instead was, seriously give "if you leave me now, you take away the biggest part of me"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHUT! That song alone sums up the problems with relationships, if you are looking for 'your other half' check in with the psych ward. Not being a WHOLE person is dangerous and finding someone to make you WHOLE means you admit you arent a whole person already. So what are you, half a person? Doesnt that sound like a handicap in life?"

And...

"Just wanted to say I've been listening for about, well, uh since Howard Stern went off the air and I'm totally SHOCKED 103.7 would make such a strange business choice, DROPPING LEYKIS and the talk radio format. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING..WHO LISTENS TO MUSIC ON THE RADIO WHEN WE CAN DOWNLOAD AND CREATE CD's, CARS HAVE iPOD JACKS!!!! WHO WANTS TO HEAR WHAT SOME RADIO CLOWNS PROGRAM!!! The fun of the TALK radio format was listening to the idiots who call in to shows like THE TOM LEYKIS show (to justify Tom's claim that MOST of his listeners are essentially elitist smart people, I have a Ph.D. in Microbiology and have been LIVING THE LEYKIS PLAN SINCE SEAN CONNERY PROVED HE WAS THE BEST BOND (via TV for me).. MY GOD SAN DIEGO AND 103.7 WEARS PANTIES!!!

TOM, keep up the good work in markets and on stations that have the testicles that you grew after a few divorces -poor soul-.

Keep teaching little boys how to be men.

-- from a guy who has NEVER been burned.. Serial monogamy is my game and every chick I've ever boned KNOWS how I get down!

From sfradio on the radio-info.com board: "dose san diego really need another format like this? I think oldies would of probably do better ratings wise than the new format would do, too many stations like this on the dial already, 102.1, 94.1, 94.9, 91.1"

From Big "F":

What the "F" is going on?. I need my father back!
