CBS pulls the plug on WFNY (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK (May 24, 2007)

From All Access: FREE FM/N.Y. Stunting Into Flip. As ALL ACCESS was the first to confirm, CBS RADIO FM Talk WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK has dropped its embattled Talk format and is stunting with a montage of NEW YORK-themed clips punctuated by the phrase "today at 5" excerpted from a TV news promo. The flip occurred after OPIE AND ANTHONY's show THURSDAY; the hosts noted that they had been told to attend a meeting with GM TOM CHIUSANO immediately after their show.

"...Free FM" was CBS' attempt at a Howard Stern-less Hot Talk format on the various CBS-owned stations around the country that had previously carried Stern's terrestrial radio show before the debut of Sirius' Howard 100/101 satellite channels. "Opie & Anthony," the replacement for David Lee Roth's and Rover's dismal morning shows on most "Free FM" East Coast and Upper Midwest stations, had drawn impossible-to-achieve 0.0 shares in the ratings for "Free FM" outlets in Chicago, Dallas and Las Vegas, and Penn Jillette's midday hour, perhaps the most consistently intelligent program on the format, ended its run in March...:

It marked the end of a brief and troubled life marked by low ratings, the embarrassing David Lee Roth morning show and most recently the removal of hosts JV and Elvis over a prank phone call.

Update: Free FM,has returned to its rock roots is known once again as WXRK, or K-Rock. Opie and Anthony remain on the air in AM drive.

K-Rock and its WXRK call letters returned at 5pm EDT as "The Rock of New York." "Bringing K-Rock back to New York is the right move," said Tom Chiusano, who apologized before the station fittingly kicked-off with Nirvana's "All Apologies."

K-ROCK will be aimed at the 25-34 men demographic (rather narrow if you ask me), and play rock from the 90s and today.

Here is what K-ROCK played in the the first hour:

NIRVANA - All Apologies
AC/DC - Back In Black
LINKIN PARK - What I've Done
GUNS N' ROSES - Welcome To The Jungle (played 2x)
SMASHING PUMPKINS - Bullet With Butterfly Wings
GREEN DAY - American Idiot
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
TOOL - The Pot
OFFSPRING - Come Out And Play
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - Dani California
LED ZEPPELIN - D'Yer Mak'er
PAPA ROACH - Last Resort
PEARL JAM - Alive
RACONTEURS - Steady, As She Goes

Too bad it didn't flip to the good old WLIR 92.7 alternative rock/dance hybrid format of the turn of the millenium. That would have been way cool.

Editor: will 103.7 Free FM be next? Stay tuned.
