The Wires (Apr 28, 2007)

ZWire: The recent FCC ruling takes HD Radio from “experimental” to “standard” in the industry, which means stations will no longer need permission from the FCC to begin broadcasting in HD. It also permits AMs to begin broadcasting HD at night. These changes are expected to open the door for more stations to begin converting their signals to HD. In Northeast Pennsylvania, this has already been happening.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New YORK yesterday (4/25) ruled that digital music and media downloads are not "public performances" and should not be subject to a public performance license and additional royalty payment, Digital Media Wire reports. Performing rights organization ASCAP had proposed that a public performance royalty also be applied to downloads, but the Digital Media Association (DiMA) and others filed opposition briefs.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Lincoln Financial Media is exploring the sale of its broadcast and media subsidiary and is in the process of hiring advisors for a potential deal. A sale of the television and radio stations and production and syndication operations might raise $1.5 billion for the company. Lincoln Financial Media owns 18 radio stations including four in San Diego, three TV stations, and the production company that produces and distributes SEC and ACC football and basketball. Lincoln acquired the stations when it bought Jefferson-Pilot Corp. in 2005.

CBS Talk KSCF 103.7 is welcoming syndicated morning man Adam Carolla back to town for a live local broadcast 6pm-10pm on "Carolla De Mayo" on May 3 at the Wave House in Mission Beach. Carolla and sidekicks Danny Bonaduce and Teresa Strasser will be joined by special celebrity guests for the evening. Happy Hare: The Virginia Tech shooting happened April 16th. The Texas City Disaster occurred April 17th 1947. This is the anniversary month of my bloody baptism into radio when I rushed to Texas City to pick up bodies, many of the unrecognizable as human. By the end of that day I was hired when I was asked to do remote broadcasts from that carnage, my first experience in talking over the radio. Everything I needed to know about radio I learned at KGBC in Galveston. In fact, the most exciting thing that happened to me in my career was not getting to know Frank Sinatra during my KLAC days. Almost but not quite.

Media Hog of the Month of April 2007 (Apr 23, 2007)

I was looking though all of my old articles that I have done for SDN since 1998 and I came across a feature that I used to do for a while back in 1999 called the Media Hog of the Month, given to a person in the media who is there just too much.

The winner: Sanjaya, the just booted-off contestant from American Idol.

Maybe with his falsetto singing style, he should grow his hair long, put on a dress, and go out looking like RuPaul on stage. He better work!

This edition of SDN is brought to you by RuPaul's Frozen Fish Sticks...the only seafood made from clownfish.
