Baseball Season's Greetings (Apr 4, 2006)

Yesterday, the Padres powered by Jake Peavey defeated the Giants 6-1 with Barry Bonds being not much of a threat in the season opener. Mike Piazza homered at his first appearrance as a Padre, the ninth Padre to ever do so.

Jerry Coleman started a new season for the umpteenth time, along with Ted Leitner and Tim Flannery to share the play by play duties in the SAIC Studios wherever that may be where the Padres are playing at the time. They all appear on XX Sports 1090 and FM 105.7. 1090 can reach up and down the coast while 105.7 reaches eastwards towards Imperial and Mexicali.

On La Poderosa XEMO 860, the Spanish-language broadcasts are handled by Eduardo Ortega and Juan Angel Avilia.

On Cable Channel 4 San Diego as well as Channel 704 HDTV, Matt Vasgersian and Mark Grant are the men calling the plays. Tony Gwynn, number 19, will be filling in for 30 home games.

Channel 4 will broadcast 145 Padres games, mostly the late afternoon and prime-time games. They won't be carrying 14 midweek road day games (why not compete with Erica Kane?) or three Saturday day games carried by Fox (channel 6 locally or FM 87.7 MHz audio) so that some of the cable-disadvantaged viewers can watch the Padres for free at least three times this season.

Every Friday and Saturday game televised by Channel 4 also will be shown on Mi San Diego channel 43, NBC San Diego's Spanish-language station, which is also on Cox digital 143.

Mexico's cable system, Cablemas, will carry every game of the Channel 4 telecast. The audio on Mi San Diego and Cablemas is a simulcast of the Padres' Spanish-language radio broadcast on XEMO-AM (860) with Eduardo Ortega and Juan Angel Avila. As an option, the Spanish-impaired listeners can listen to the XX Sports audio on their radios while watching the video of the Padres on Mi San Diego.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is scheduled for just 58 games this season on Fox Sports West. The Dodgers will be on Fox Sports West 2. The problem is that MLB won't allow the cable systems to broadcast those games into the San Diego market in order to protect the Padres, which the MLB has authority for like the Dodgers and the Angels, from out of market competetion, like it really hurts the Padres? Oh please. Cable systems that carry the Fox Sports Wests have to put on substitute programming from Fox Sports Net when the Dodgers and Angels are on.

Most of the Dodgers TV schedule will appear on FSN2 (if you're lucky to get the games on there where available) or on KCAL Channel 9 in L.A. if you live far enough north so that the low-power TV signal of KOXM 9 doesn't interfere with it. Those in South San Diego as well as North have a better chance of catching some of the Angels games on KCOP 13 (over the air, not on cable). Check anaheimangels.com and dodgers.com for more TV game information.

Dodgers flagship radio station KFWB 980 in Los Angeles and one of its sister FM stations, KLSX 97.1, have announced that, beginning with yesterday's season opener against the Atlanta Braves, all Dodgers games will be available on KLSX's HD2 channel, Free 2 HD, or 97.1-2. Says Pat Duffy, "When the Dodgers are on the radio, listeners come from all over the dial. Now fans can hear [Dodger play-by-play announcers] Vin Scully, Rick Monday and Charley Steiner on the next generation of the radio dial on HD Radio."

The Angels games will be on KSPN 710 Los Angeles. XSPN 800 will begin coverage of the Angels on Friday.

WGN will carry 75 Cubs games and 31 White Sox games this season.

TBS will again carry Braves games, with 28 contests scheduled through the end of May.

D.T. Returns!!! Go Padres! (Updated 9am Apr 3, 2006)

And just in time for the Padres regluar season opener. Jake Peavy will be the starting pitcher when they open their season at home today at 4:05pm for a three-day stand against the San Francisco Giants, then battle again at 7:05pm Tuesday and Wednesday just as the sun begins to set as we open our first week in Daylight Saving Time (not Savings). The games can also be seen on Channel 4 San Diego as well as digital channel 704, their high-def channel, XX Sports Radio 1090 AM and their newly-acquired 105.7 for points to the near and far east of the Outland. XEMO 860 has the games in Spanish. On satellite, subscribe to XM Radio and listen to the Padres on a channel to be announced weekly, and this week, they're on channel 189. ESPN2 Will air the game as well.
