CBS Corp. Purchases KFMB AM/FM/TV Stations (Apr 1, 2006)

In a surprise move, Midwest Television has sold the KFMB AM/FM/TV radio/TV combo outlet to CBS Corp. for an undisclosed sum sources said.

KFMB-TV, which has been a CBS affilliate since the station signed on almost 60 years ago, will become a corporate-owned and operated television station as of today, with many local staffers replaced with automation and their news anchormen dismissed in favor of transferring the anchormen from other CBS-owned television stations, reasoning that the longtime San Diego local news outlet has apparently lacked professionalism and still hasn't shaken the image it received when it once aired the live kid show host Shane in Wonderland in the 60s.

CBS will experiment with the program schedule of KFMB in the daytime, transferring the rights of "Dr. Phil" to XETV, dropping the 4pm news because it was proven to be redundant and takes away the ratings of its flagship 5pm broadcast, and replace the 3pm-5pm block with CBS Chick Flicks, a daily movie showcase of movies aimed at women from the 80s-90s.

KFMB-AM 760 will not be going through any changes in its schedule for now, but KFMB-FM 100.7, which currently programs Jack-FM(tm), will be changing formats to classic rock and roll oldies from the 60s-80s, similar to KRTH-FM in Los Angeles. The longtime program director of 100.7, Tracy Johnson, will be transferred to run Jack-FM in Los Angeles.

Says an insider about this move, "Jack-FM has been a complete failure in San Diego. The imaging is horrid. The songs don't stand the test of time. There is no personality. Monique and the Man aren't doing their job against Jeff and Jer. In short, we've gotten sick of answering e-mails and phone calls about what songs were played to the listeners who just don't know that they can look up what we've been playing by going to our radio station website."

Says another insider, "The Arbitrends for March are predicted to have Jack-FM fall to below a 2.0, and are on its way to the Bluto Blutarski 0.0 at this rate. That's why a decision had been made to sell the stations and change the way things are done."

Says an inside close to Tracy, "He believed in the Jack-FM format. What he got was lower ratings, lost Jeff and Jer, and they can't go back to Star because Clear Channel took the handle and even hired the announcer of the Star sweepers for their operation. Tracy goofed up big time and he's been hating it more and more with each Arbitrend report coming out."

Possible deejays for KFMB-FM include voice-tracking former top San Diego radio personality Shotgun Tom Kelly into an afternoon shift, running reruns of the late Robert W. Morgan's morning show until a new morning team can be found, rehiring Brian Beirne to host a nightly late night 50's doowop show, and picking up the late Wolfman Jack show to run in the early evening.

On the weekends, expect KFMB-FM to run old unscoped airchecks of B100 from the 70s-90s.
