"W Radio Los Angeles" is the new moniker for XETRA AM 690 and the Rosarito-licensed station is aiming their programing primarily towards the Los Angeles area, not unlike the days of the Mighty 690 and XTRA Beautiful Music, where advertising dollars really do add up.

Their new website is http://www.wradiousa.com/ and they are streaming.

Fox-y Women Gone Mad (Feb 28, 2006)

What's with the prime time programming on Fox's Sunday night? We witness two women threatening their husbands with guns on two separate shows. Makes me long for the return of the days of "Leave It To Beaver."

Prime Time television, as a nightly appointment, is very much gone. Simpsons are stale. King of the Hill is a bore. Family Guy isn't funny. American Dad is a dud. Reality television is uninspiring and boring. As for dramas, nothing but cop, lawyer, medical, and general dramas. Can't these network programming morons think of something else to put on? Too bad the days of variety shows and game shows are history. The glory days of television are over. Forget about buying HDTV gear except for sports. If you don't care for sports, just throw your TV away and take up tuba playing.

Today Roger Is Live (Feb 28, 2006)

Tired of that afternoon talker on the FM side that talks a lot about bagging hot chicks and is intolerant of sissified males? Flip over to Roger Hedgecock on KOGO 600 Tuesday afternoon from 3-6pm as he does his show live and on location.

From Flashfax: "JOIN ROGER LIVE at the Manchester Grand Hyatt downtown on the bay (in the front lobby) as we celebrate Boy Scouting and pay tribute to Norman Rockwell’s commitment to Scouting. A unique exhibit on display. Roger will deal with news of the day and downtown issues, since he’s live downtown, but we’ll also continue our support for the Scouts. C’mon by and say hello and meet some of the future leaders of San Diego."

ON THURSDAY ROGER DOES RUSH. The double dose trick. 9-12 on Rush and the 3-6 on the Roger Show.

"**ALSO AHEAD on Roger’s Community Forum…another special edition. We’re figuring maybe in two weeks on a Thursday. A debate (discussion) on airport placement. Everybody has an idea about this and most folks don’t like anybody else’s idea. Yikes. Will be interesting. We’ll have the major players in the airport search and open phones and open our performance studio to folks who don’t have titles but have property that may be impacted by one of the 600 ideas afloat in the county (and outside the county). Watch this space and start sending ideas and comments now. We’ll likely have a reserved seating thing because the studio can only fit about 30 or so folks. Comments and reservations can come to jimmyv@adnc.com and we’ll be in touch."

Didja Hear? (Feb 28, 2006)

A female employee at Fantastic Sam's corporate office said that Mikey was complaining on his morning radio show yesterday that he had to pay $20,000 in federal taxes. Hey, Mikey, where's your American spirit? Paying Uncle Sam is part of being a citizen. Qwitchabelyachin.

Was that Robin Roth that was doing an afternoon shift on Rock 105.3 this past Saturday?

FM 94.9 is touting that their morning shows have no celebrity gossip, chit chat, or reality TV stars. Good enough for me to listen to in my car. I never watch reality TV; totally useless and a waste of time. Jeff Probst? What a bore.

Tuning around the dial to see what else is on while I work out there in the San Diego outland, Star 94.1 was playing a whole bunch of songs and artists I don't recognize. Jack FM plays a lot of stuff from the 70s and 80s I recognize; wish they would play the 90s and 00s hits I recognize such as dance and comedy music. KGB FM continues to live in the year 1984 as it plays nothing compatable with today's generation of music fans. KPRI sounds okay to listen to, but needs to cut out the downer rock. KIOZ was caught playing some awful hard metal garbage I can't relate to. Neither US 95.7 or KSON play comedy country that dfsxradio.com plays, so I don't feel threatened by them. Channel 933 can't seem to play any pop dance hits heard on XM 81 the BPM channel. Magic 92.5 needs a new music director...fast! I'm sick of hearing the bitch Diana Ross wailing "Missing You" every other day; gawdawful! I thank God I only work in San Diego; I live on the Internet. Time for me to flip on ipartyradio.com to escape corporate radio hell.

Prime-time Olympics coverage stumbles at Turin (Reuters)...Dogged by U.S. mishaps on the ice and snow of Turin, Italy, and stiff competition at home from "American Idol," NBC's prime-time coverage of the Winter Games stumbled across the finish line with the lowest Olympic ratings in at least 38 years.

Univision Reducing Ownership Stake In Entravision...Entravision to buy back 7 million shares of common stock. Univision solves its DOJ problem by selling some Entravision stock back to Entravision. Univision's facing a March 26 deadline to lower its stake in first cousin Entravision to 15% - and it announces it will finish doing that by selling Entravision seven million shares of its "EVC" common stock for roughly $51 million. Univision had already bought two Entravision stations in the Bay Area (for $90 million) to get down to about 20%.

R&R News Analysis: Stern-Free CBS Stations See Steep Listener Losses...The first batch of winter 2006 Phase One Arbitrends was released Monday by Arbitron, and, based on the results, CBS Radio's WFNY (92.3 Free FM)/New York and KLSX (97.1 Free FM)/Los Angeles have a difficult challenge ahead in attracting morning drive listeners to slots once dominated by Howard Stern. Read more at the link. Perhaps CBS Radio should have gone with putting the Premiere Networks' "Bob & Tom Show" on the former Stern stations instead of Roth and Carolla.

radioandrecords also reports that SBS's Latin Urban KXOL/Los Angeles on March 5 will officially launch a new countdown show hosted by legendary air personality Rick Dees.

allaccess reports that The FCC has granted BROADCAST COMPANY OF THE AMERICAS' application to provide programming from SAN DIEGO to cross-border XHBCE 105.7, thereby rejecting complaints from LAZER (owner of a 105.7 in Hemet) and EMMIS (owner of Power 105.9 in Los Angeles) that the station's owner JAIME BONILLA was operating the facility (originally a Class B licensed to MATOMOROS JARAMILLO, BCN, MEXICO) at variance with its authorized parameters and interfering with LAZER's KXRS/HEMET, CA, and that BCA kews or should know of that wrongdoing.

Welcome to Decade Two of the Groove Music Era (Updated 9am, Feb 27, 2006)

If 1955 was the start of the rock and roll era when Bill Haley and the Comets hit the charts, then 1996 could also be defined as the beginning of the groove music era when a New York radio station flipped its format on Feb 14 to dance music and started a trend for dance-hungry fans everywhere.

WKTU 103.5 "The Beat of New York" (now streaming) launched a dance music format that inspired some radio staitons in the U.S. to flip off the grunge and hip hop and even smooth jazz in favor of dance music such as the late Groove Radio 103.1 in Los Angeles, but dance music's bigger success would come when it timed coincidentally with the Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowing Clear Channel to gobble up stations and homogenize their CHR playlists with bland dance-less top 40 formats nationwide, creating a crave for dance music.

Thanks to Napster, Real Audio, Shoutcast, mp3s, and all kinds of other gizmos and formats, the dance music genre, with the help of personal computers, have helped make dance a favorite music format in the dance music era, while Clear Channel continues to churn out payola-influenced cookie-cutter CHR crud for a declining young audience, who knows where to find dance music.

Recently, ipartyradio.com, one of our top favorite radio stations, has added live deejays as well as a weekend mix show to its lively dance format.

iPartyRadio.com is the creation of dance music enthusiasts that have ties to former dance radio stations in Chicago and Philadelphia, as well as talent from New York City, Washington DC, Phoenix, Milwaukee and Boston. It is our goal to provide you your favorite party music as well as keeping you informed about your favorite artists and events relating to the dance music world.

And of course, there's the longtime favorite grooveradio.com streaming since 2000.

Do a Google search for more streaming dance music stations, or check out the Radio Data section for dance radio stations.

Check out their websites and listen.

KLSD's Pixel Venture Trips Out (Feb 27, 2006)

It looks like KLSD 1360 has pulled the plug on their penny-a-pixel banner venture. I hope I don't get billed the $30 I paid for and the banner I sent for dfsxradio never saw the light of day on their website.

JUST IN! KACV NO LONGER STREAMING DR. DEMENTO!!!! (Updated 9:30am Feb 25, 2006)

Two people in the USENET newsgroup rec.music.dementia announced that Dr. Demento's radio show is no longer being streamed over KACV in Amarillo, TX, though the show continues to be carried on the station over their limited-range terrestrial antennas.

With Talonian Productions asking many affilliates that stream to pay $10,000 a year for the privilege to carry Dr. Demento's radio show on the Internet, four of the eight known stations have stopped streaming the show.

This leads me to wonder if Dr. Demento's production company continues to shoot itself in the foot with demands like this that could eventually hasten its doom, and with competetors such as all-comedy music radio stations on the Internet around, listeners will get their fix of funny music without Dr. Demento elsewhere.

Dr. Demento needs to get with today's times as people will settle for downloads, file sharing, and podcasts of funny music instead of wasting their time in a futile attempt to convince a poorly-educated music director from commercial radio in the Southern California Outland to carry Demento's radio show.
