The Last Day for Fabulous 690 Is? (Jan 14, 2006)

From Accessdip in radio-info LA: "Well, the final curtain is being drawn on the great history of the Mighty 690 as and English Language station. This morning, Brad Chambers mentioned that the new owners would like to close the sale on XETRA by the close of business Monday. He also mentioned that there may be a 15 day period before that company can take over the station. So the last day of standards on 690 could be as early as Sunday night, or as late as 1/31, but no later."

Stay tuned.

KCRW EXPANDS MUSIC PODCASTING WITH VIDEO OFFERINGS OF LIVE SHOWS...Beginning Tuesday (Jan. 10), public station KCRW in southern California is offering video podcasts of live sessions performed by music bands on its show "Morning Becomes Eclectic." Business Week: One device that could really help HD radio gain traction would be an HD-ready iPod -- which is a definite possibility, says Richard Doherty, director of consultancy Envisioneering Group in Seaford, N.Y. Here's why: On Jan. 10, Apple introduced its first iPod-related radio product, an FM remote for iPod nano and the fifth-generation iPod. The iPod Radio Remote, selling for $49, allows users to skip tracks, adjust the volume on iPods, and listen to FM radio stations. It could be a sign that Apple, long pressured to combine iPod with a radio service, has finally chosen its technological path.

NY Daily Times: Turns out Howard Stern isn't completely gone from terrestrial radio after all. Illegal pirate radio broadcasts of his Sirius Satellite program have been heard this week - for free - on broadcast radio, including 95.1 FM in Brooklyn and 101.5 FM in North Jersey.

Letters: Memories of 80s SD Radio (Jan 14, 2006)

From Richee S.:

I used to work with you at [name of job deleted by SDN editor] back in the 80s.

You and Jim T. and Russ W. and Dean R. and the son of the police caption. There was one other guy, can't remember his name, drove a yellow Corolla I think.

Anyway I live in Kansas City now. I came across your website when doing a search to see if I could find Jim T. Apparently he has posted some comments on your website? thus I how I found your website.

You have a very impressive website. I am in awe!

It is interesting to see KPRI is back. I remember back in the early 80's when they were competing with KGB as one of the two big San Diego Rock Station. I was working at the [name of job deleted by SDN editor] at the time, and we used to deliver pizzas to them. They were on Aero Dr next to the airport. The drivers loved to get that run because the DJs would give there surplus promo record album as tips. I even still have a bumper sticker from KPRI somewhere. I should scan it and send you a copy.

In terms of radio, I always went for the underdog. Which is why I fondly remember KPRI.

I also remember 91X when they first started. did nothing for me at the time . . . but now . . . put me in a time machine, send me back, and I would be their number one fan.

Maybe it is just me, but music just does not seem the same. Blame it on the internet - and people stealing songs. But if one were to look at the Billboard chart from say the 2nd week of Jan 1981, there would be all the big named groups. Now 25 years later, it seems it is all hip-hop ghetto music.

Back is the 70s - and 80s, one had a whole stable of groups in all genres - and one could count on their fav group releasing a new album every 6 - 9 months. One does not have this stable of groups anymore - Boston, Styx's, The Smiths, Depeche mode , Madonna, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Spyro Gyra, Tina Turner, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Rush, Alan Parsons, Boz Skaggs . . .the list goes on and on and on and on!

It scares me that if I were asked to name one current group, the only one I know of is Britney Spears!!! (and I don't like her music), oh and Rufus Wainwright

When I do listen to radio, I tend to listen to NPR and PRI.

Oh and now that I have high-speed internet, and even though I live in Kansas City, I listen/record to Mr. KABC out of LA every night - he is great!

Take Care
