Radio Needs to Take Some Chances (Sep 24, 2005)"American Idol" judge and radio countdown host Randy Jackson advises radio to take some chances. On both ends of the demo scale - to start reaching younger ears by reviving the old top 40 idea of "Pick hits" to expose untried music. Delivering the keynote address at the NAB Radio Show's Radio Luncheon today, the American Idol judge and former A&R exec warned the radio industry that failing to embrace change gives competitors an opening to steal away listeners. "It's not like it was 20 years ago, when radio was the only game in town," he said. "Look at what American Idol did to the record labels. This little TV show did an end-around on them. What is radio going to do when Internet radio hits critical mass? Plus, there are already 21 million iPods out there." But Jackson went on to recount how important radio was to him as a child, adding that he believes radio has the power to reconnect with listeners and remain relevant. "Step up to the plate, and grab their attention," he said. "Spend money on program development, and look for the new idea." He also urged radio to take more chances on new music and praised the opportunity HD Radio will afford the industry to launch creative new formats and give increased exposure to new artists. "Seize the moment," he said. "In the end, it always comes down to the product. The public is waiting. Don't let them leave you behind."
The New 91X Already Taking Some Chances (Sep 24, 2005)New 91X MD and afternooner Marco Collins has introduced something that has long been missing from the San Diego airwaves: remixed music in the afternoon.Friday afternoon at 5:50pm, Marco started a weekly feature called "X-Mix" featuring popular songs mashed up and mixed up to form a 40-minute block of memories and absurdities. You can get these musical mashups, the latest featuring Gwen Stefani vs. The Clash, at http://www.partyben.com/. Marco used to work at Live 105.3 in San Fransisco and was introduced to the mashups from another deejay there. The Sixx Mixx mashups airs on that station Fridays from 6-6:30pm. The Sixx Mixx website has a few downloads here: http://www.partyben.com/downloads/sixxmixx.html More mashups also found at http://www.mashmix.com/ and http://www.culturedeluxe.com/ Also at 91X: something I never heard since the sale of 91X to Jacor I swear: Nancy Sinatri's 1966 hit "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'." This Is Your Radio On Drugs (Sep 24, 2005)On both 91X and 94/9: Weezer's "We Are All On Drugs." Is alternative rock turning into Dr. Demento or something. You gotta be demented to play stuff like that.Dave and Jeff Fired (Sep 24, 2005)This past week, ESPN Radio 800 replaced the locally produced Dave and Jeff show with The Sportsbash from the 1-4pm time period. No reason was given.Red To Go Dark? (Sep 24, 2005)All access reports that Emmis-owned adult standards WRDA (RED @ 104.1) in St. Louis has lost morning personality Dana Daniels. No, not because I'm going to the game, but because ROCK 105.3 FM now broadcasts Chargers games and this Sunday happens to be a night game versus the New York Giants (starting at 5:30 pm). If you do the math...and, I did, 3+ hour game with 2 hour post game analysis will pretty much run through my entire show and into the show after mine. So, it's my first Sunday night off in years, but, it'll give me a chance to catch up on listening to the music that I'm so far behind on...plus, I'll get an early start on celebrating the anniversary of my birth."2005 NAB Marconi Radio Award Winners (Sep 24, 2005)Below is a complete listing of 2005 NAB Marconi Radio Awards winners:
