But there's another category of radio programming. Call it "do-it-yourself" radio, programs started and maintained by people with an interest in a particular subject and who often pitch in with the hosting, producing and fund-raising to get their message on the air. Three prime examples of such programming in this market are "Andrew Schorr's Patient Power," "Cop Talk" and "Conversations With Father Bob." FMQB: Clear Channel running Ad-lets? Five second ads? Talk about a short attention span disorder. XM will broadcast the 20th Annual Farm Aid Anniversary Concert live on September 18 from the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, IL starting at 12 noon est.. This year's event features Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Kenny Chesney, Arlo Guthrie, Buddy Guy, Emmy Lou Harris, Los Lonely Boys, John Mayer, Widespread Panic and more. You can hear the show on X Country (channel 12) and XM Live (channel 200). Houston Astrodome Gets Its Own Radio Station! FCC OK's low-power FM for thousands in 'Dome. The FCC has authorized a 30-watt low-power FM station to operate inside the stadium and deliver information to the approximately 10,000 Hurricane Katrina evacuees currently living there. Licensed to the nonprofit, Texas-based Austin Airwaves, the station — which operates at 95.3 — will air news about storm recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast, along with information about jobs and enrolling children in Houston-area schools. Voice guy and longtime WLUP (THE LOOP)/CHICAGO Production Director BOB DUNSWORTH has left the legendary Classic Rock station after 14 years. BOB has signed as a Voice Over talent with ICM BEVERLY HILLS. He will also continue to be represented in CHICAGO by LINDA JACK TALENT, and for radio Imaging by ADAM GOODMAN at VOICEHUNTER. You can hear all of his demos and get contact info at www.bobdunsworth.com. (Sep 9, 2005)The seven Clear Channel stations in San Diego raised 10 tons, 19,890 pounds of coins, bills and checks amounting to an estimated $275,000.00 during the 14-hour Storm Aid event at Qualcomm Stadium. The money will be presented to the Red Cross for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.Jack-FM decided to play Dr. Demento yesterday afternoon when during the 4pm hour the station at 100.7 played The Rocky Horror Picture Show's "Time Warp" from the cult movie of 1975. Guess Jack wants to get demented after all. Last Friday afternoon's Demented Top 20 time slot on dfsxradio.com was apparently miscued as it ran the Star Trek Volume II supersubject of the "I Still Get Demented" radio show. Looks like some engineers got two shows mixed up. No plans to air last week's countdown today. Yesterday on the 91X Resurrection Lunch Hour, Steve West played some kind of Esquivel mix of "It's My Life" by Talk Talk. Wonder if Jack-FM will play Esquivel sometime.

SDN has no affillition with these stories. From Webwire: The American Red Cross and XM Satellite Radio have joined forces to launch Red Cross Radio, a 24-hour, nationwide XM channel to provide help and information for Hurricane Katrina victims, Red Cross staff and volunteers along the Gulf Coast, and other Red Cross workers across the country. The newly-created Red Cross Radio (XM Channel 248) is broadcasting on XM Satellite Radio from coast to coast What Did D.T. Listen To Yesterday? (Sep 8, 2005)FM 94/9, Planet 103.7, Jack FM 100.7, Mighty 1090, MP3s of Firesign Theatre and Van Halen, and last night's Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien (in the morning on TV).What didja think I was listening to? dfsxradio.com? Where do you think Mickey Mouse vacations? Complaints and Grievances (Sep 8, 2005)Why can't Clear Channel, KFMB AM/FM, KYXY/Planet, 94.9/KSON/KIFM, KPRI, KCBQ/KPRZ, and all of the other local stations including DFSX pool together for a single American Red Cross donation drive instead of having each station group fend for themselves? It seems that the main purpose of that Clear Channel Storm Aid stadium event yesterday served more as self promotion than to collect donations. Why not put your competetive gloves aside and invite the other stations into the donation drive fold.Do you really think that the FCC raid of Pirate 96.9 will actually lead to bigger ratings for the local broadcasters? Will the listeners blame the broadcasters for complaining to the FCC and turn to their mp3 players for music instead of them? That's good public relations, isn't it? No? Can't we get a better adult pop station than My 94.1? It's just pure monotony. I prefer KBIG out of Los Angeles with it's mature rhythmic dance mixes instead of whatever My seems to like playing. And finally...is it too much trouble for any of the radio stations in town to mix in some of the hits from the 60s and 70s more often into their formats? I'd like to hear KYXY play some 60s and 70s classics, FM 94/9 play some 60s psychedelic era rock, KSON play some 60s and 70s country classics, 92.5 play some 60s Doowop, Motown and soul classics, and Jack FM playing rock hits from the 60s and even the 50s. With KOOL gone and all oldies formats in San Diego dead forever, and many late Boomers and Gen Xers fans of 50s and 60s pop rock as they grew up listening to them on oldies stations, shouldn't the stations consider keeping these songs alive on the airwaves in this fashion? D.T.'s Car Radio Presets (Sep 8, 2005)Slow news day. Nothing seemed to happen. So let's do a feature I haven't done since Buffy slayed her last Vampire two years ago with my car preset reccomendations.
