San Diego Day (Aug 7, 2005)

Here's something you won't find in the Union-Tribune. Wonder if payola is involved with the newspaper not reporting stuff like this?

From pirate969.org:

It's San Diego Day!!! What's San Diego Day? Well, it's an idea inspired by us over here at FRSD 96.9FM. The idea being to have a summer day in the park, complete with BBQ, beverages (wink wink), sports, hanging around, and just having a nice day in America's Finest City. For discussion, check the thread about it on the message board.

WHERE: Balboa Park, at Administrative Courtyard. [directions]

WHEN: Sunday, August 7th, 2005. 11:00am - Sunset.

COST: Absolutely free.

WHAT TO BRING: Bring any food you might want grilled up, and our chef will be manning the grill. Also, bring any beverages, but avoid glass bottles. Maybe a lawn chair or two, blanket, and other picnic type stuff. We will be keeping a section of the grill meat-free, just to be extra sensetive to our vegan and vegetarian friends.

The theme for this event is fun in the summer time. Our list of activities will include water gun fights (continual shooting; bring your own), volley ball, kick ball, improvised lawn darts, croquet, reading cause you're tired of playing, and tomar el sol. We'll have some speakers set up to play music, and just generally a good time.

The highlight of the day will be a kick ball game pinning FRSD 96.9FM against the crew of Radio Active San Diego. Long have we had a grudge, and on August 7th, that grudge shall be settled once and for all, on the glorious fields of a kick ball game. Yes Radio Active, we are throwing down the kick ball gauntlet!

Crazy Frog Hits #1 and #5 (August 6, 2005)

Here's some music news you won't find in the Union-Buffoon newspaper.

The Crazy Frog is taking America by storm.

You wouldn't know it if all you restricted yourself to is San Diego terrestrial radio. What about San Diego-based Internet radio?

In 1996, we had "The Macarena", and in 2000, we did "The Hampster Dance". Both became summer anthems.

In 2005, this year, we finally have an unofficial summer anthem. "Axel F" by the Crazy Frog hit #1 on this week's Dementia Top 20 radio show, and #5 on this weekend's Dr. Demento radio show.

And, no, nobody paid Tanny or Hansen to play that song. The listeners demanded, and it soared on the charts.

"The Top 20 Ballot has been going nuts", says pop music expert David Tanny, a veteran radio news reporter on SDN who runs the six-year-old dfsxradio.com internet radio station. "I'm shocked that in the San Diego Outland skyline, nowhere is this song to be found on any of the radio station's playlists. This is a fun song and everybody of all ages are demanding to make it #1 again for next week's DT 20 radio show."

Tanny shares some of the comments he's received in the request e-mails. Says one, "DFSX is playing the popular music radio abandoned years ago. Thanks for getting the Crazy Frog. My kids dance when that song comes on." Says another e-mailer, "Axel F by the Crazy Frog is lots more fun than some rapper who sounds like he can't stand fun. The Frog is fun." And another, "You're the only local station that plays that Frog song. I asked Channel 933 to play it and they said something like that they'll think about it. Sure. It's not on their playlist so they won't play it unless their label pays the programmer a Hummer." And one more, "Tanny should run 91X. Maybe put dfsx music on it complete with epithets once that station is free from Cheap Channel's hands."

As of Friday at 9pm, "Axel F." has gotten some 75 votes for next week's DT 20 show, which isn't and will never be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, but Tanny says that another new song is closing in on Axel F with just 24 hours left to vote. What is it? He won't say.

And, yes, dfsx plays "Macarena" and "Hampster" as well.

The company has not publicly said that it intends to launch a full-fledged digital music offering. However, several music industry executives confirmed that the company has been actively discussing plans to enter the market for several months, including proposals for a subscription-based service.
