Didja Hear? (July 14, 2005)

Chris Cantore of 91X shared the news yesterday that the Clear Channel World Domination Headquarters on 9660 Granite Ridge Drive is being split into two, plus the water was turned off so people had to bring their own water bottles. With CC divesting programming interest in the four Mexican-owned stations by September 2006, it seems that the leased building is being downsized into half of its original size when it opened in 2002. Already, CCSD lost the JSA'd KSDO (when Chase Radio Partners sold it to a Spanish-language religious broadcaster), XETRA 690 (to CCLA in 2003, then itself sold to another Spanish-language programmer), and the two satellites for two of its San Diego stations in Temecula. Now, CCSD is divesting its programming and marketing interests for the four remaining Mexican-owned radio stations, Z90 (90.3), 91X (91.1), Magic 92.5, and KOOL 99.3, which would leave the building house with six fewer radio station studios than it did at its peak after it added Z90 and Hot Country 99.3 when it purchased the programming rights from Victor Diaz's Califormula Group.

After the 10am hour, Robin Roth came on commenting that she's glad that she doesn't have to pay for air conditioning. What's next for Clear Channel? Coin-operated air conditioners (in each studio, naturally) for a buck an hour? Don't laugh! This could become a reality as the cost of electricity and oil are skyrocketing higher all the time in America's Behindest City.

Does this mean that Clear Channel would also have to give up their secret basement hockey arena as well?

Jack-FM: The First 100 Days (July 14, 2005)

Today marks the 100th day of the existance of Jack-FM 100.7, which supplanted the Star concept. As of late, the station started playing something that it hasn't played since the station said "Die, Star" that day. Jingles? There are now singing jingles for Jack FM being played.

E-mails about Jack come in every now and then. Here's one from reader Tony Bixby:

Everybody has been talking about how great Star 100.7 was. Tracy Johnson and the team at Star were wizards and knew exactly what they are doing. Let's be honest, Star has had some unshining moments!

Shawn & Donna in the mornings
Celebrity DJs on Memorial Day and 4th of July (all voice tracked)
DJ's voice tracked on weekends
Pirate Boy takes over the star airwaves
Dave Smiley leaving
The New Guy reveals his real name
Whirl Till You Hurl competition
Love Soup
The Love Doctor
Ricky Lopez at night
Jen's Jukebox
Super Mouth
Throwing away every radio personality and Star history for JACK

I'm sure there are many more! I'll be the first to admit I've been a Star listener from day one. From Jeff & Jer's first day, to Jagger & Kristi's wedding, to listening to the Fugitive clues. I was a fan. Now, I'm not. Star had many great radio moments, but not all great, including the switch to Jack. When will this April Fools joke end?
