THE ROGER HEDGECOCK SHOW
KOGO/AM 600 - 3P - 6P (Pacific)
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
THE RADIO MAYOR OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
WEDNESDAY JUNE 1ST , 2005

TODAY ON THE RADIO: Yes there is more fallout from SD council and decision
to okay worker contract scheme!! Michael Smerconish from WHPT in Philly
visits to talk about homeland security and his book “Flying Blind.” Guns
at the fair update. Vote Yes on Vector Control and a whole bunch more!!
ROGER in rare form after a long weekend so buckle it up and get your
homework done prior to 3:07pm plVALENTINE CRUISE!!
(this one you can afford)

SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE ON THE RADIO is cruising’ these days. Heard just
yesterday that KOGO’s program suit and at least one of our talk radio
hosts is planning a cruise in December of this year. (I would pay not to
go on a cruise with a suit). Not sure where they are going. But it did set
the ponder to working. I need a cruise my ownself.

Since I’m low runged on the economic ladder it can’t be someplace real
fancy and the ship can’t require dress up to be at the Captain’s table. I
have one suit and I’ve successfully avoided wearing it more than twice
since I bought it after the Wildfire Debacle of 2003.

I’ve decided that my cruise will be up the beautiful Tijuana River Valley.
It’s close to home and most of us haven’t visited this splendid paradise,
maybe ever. It’s a hidden treasure. We’ll do four nights and three days
along the river on one of them two decker bay ships. We’ll stop in Tijuana
to shop and buy curios and maybe some drugs. We’ll sail up river as far as
we can. The waterway has gotten a little clogged in recent years with
“endangered feces,” but that is a sight to be seen by itsownself.

We’ll eat fish and other stuff that we catch off the boat. We’ll swim in
the river like when we was kids. At night we’ll watch the fireworks that
happen in Tijuana each evening. Gunfire actually but from a distance it
looks like sky rockets and fancy designed air theatre.

Let others wander off to New England or set sail with a suit person. We’re
gonna have the time of our lives. Price will be cheap. We swear this will
be a vacation cruise you’ll talk about the rest of your life….assuming any
of us get back alive. Watch this space!!

MUTTERINGS

**I’VE ALREADY GOT A FAVORITE IN THE SD MAYORS RACE…It’s Jim Bell. He’s
been passed over a hunnerd times and keeps coming back. Sooner rather than
later his ideas about the county economy are gonna catch on. Jim’s idea is
dirt simple. He sez the county needs to become self sufficient in wheat.
He figures that we can each grow enough wheat to feed our selves and maybe
even turn some of it into petrol for our vehicles.

Jim’s been scoffed at a lot but more and more of us are coming around to
the wisdom of a major wheat harvest. Not only would be feed our families
and power our cars, we could also use wheat as our county and city
currency. Gummint employees would be paid by the bushel. The DROP program
would be an increased allotment of wheat DROPPED on retiring workers.
Really rich retirees would have big silos on their property and not have
to worry about food or fuel for the rest of their lives.

I don’t think there is another candidate in the SD city mayor’s race who
has this kind of approach to city finances. Given what y’all have got
right now Jim Bell may be a man for our time? Give it some thought, okay?

** VECTOR CONTROL discussion continues apace. I’m a yes vote cause I
really like the idea of prolonged life…at least within reason. Some folks
continue to argue that West Nile Fever and Hantavirus is some kinda
gummint conspiracy to get nine bucks from each of us.

I haven’t suddenly become a big fan of big gummint but there are some
tasks that I’d like gummint to do and one of them is to be real aggressive
when it comes to public health. We’ve always had challenges with disease
transmission and all but now in the after 911-01 world I really want a
well put together health operation. TB and polio are making a comeback
thanks to illegal immigration. The bird virus and the rodent virus have
traveled from long places away and now reside in San Diego County. Yep,
I’d like my gummint to get to work keeping most of us alive.

But the gummint already has money to do this job. Well each county in the
state has a vector control district and each is supported by a vector
control fee that is part of our property taxes. (to the best of my
research knowledge this loot is not part of a general fund @ the county)
In recent years that fee has gone down rather than up. But now with WNF
and HV we expect gummint to do more. And since we passed a statewide
initiative sometime ago, the vector fee can’t be increased without our
vote.

So we get to vote. And yes because we demanded a vote we have to pay for
the vote to be done. Some folks are like startled: Why am I being forced
to vote (you voted to get a vote). Why is the vote costing money? (cause
free don’t exist anymore). I almost threw my mail ballot away (darwin is
in charge of this problem). I don’t have nine dollars. (mortgage your
cat). I can get a can of Raid and do the same job. (goodbye now).

On the other hand I don’t much cotton to the county and various vector
folks being real scared about making the case for the vector fee. It ain’t
a real complicated argument to make and health folks did make a serious
strong case to the county board of supervisors which prompted them (all
together) to authorize the vote back several weeks ago. And the
supervisors themselves are timid as a virgin on the matter. None of them
want to step up and say yea we got a major health concern and we need a
couple of bucks to beef up our defense forces. Same folks who voted for
the vote gunshy to support their decision. Amazing.

And I’m upset too cause the health folks are in the press (where reporters
will print anything you say and not question anything you say) saying that
unless we cough up the nine bucks each that they are gonna stop trying to
save our lives. Huh? It’s the old “we’ll have to fire cops and
firefighters,” trick that gummint always uses to scare us into tax
increases. Idiots!!

I’m still a yes vote on Vector Control. I got 8 bucks back from an
insurance rebate. I kick in a dollar and I’m home free.

**JAZZ 88.3.…City College in San Diego runs a radio station that I’ve just
discovered. All Jazz most all the time. Near no commercial breaks save a
donation pitch seldom now and then. I don’t play it on the way to work
cause at that time of my day I’m fired up and ready with game face. But in
the eve on the trek home it is soothing, especially after hearing
anti-vector control folks on the radio for hours on end. It calms me and
sets my mood for the evening at home with my bride.

Great music all the time. If you like Jazz give it a try. I’m hoping that
maybe Grossmont College will come up with a country college station. I
keep trying to avoid commercials on the two current country radio stations
but they plot against me and run their breaks at the same time so I can’t
punch away from one stations cluster and get music. I could do that in
Dallas-Fort Worth cause the two competing stations took breaks at
different times.

Shouldn’t be badmouthing commercial radio, should I?
