911 Families for a Secure America chimes in on border wars. And ROGER

SAVE OUR CROSS!!
(update)

YOU HEARD YESTERDAY that following ROGER’S advice, members of the Mt.
Soledad Memorial Association and folks from our Save Our Cross Committee
traveled to D.C. to meet with the U.S. Parks Department. ROGER figured it
was time that Bill Kellogg of the Memorial Assn sat down with Parks folks
to get the real tale on how his group will be allowed to function when Our
Cross and Vets Memorial are turned over to the Feds as approved by the
Congress and okayed by the President.

Kellogg has foot drug on the transition and that has put Our Cross in the
cross hairs and SD City Council has balked at the turnover. Burp.

Anywho the meeting yesterday went great. Meeting was with the number two
guy at Parks and his legal counsel. They bent over backwards to assure
Kellogg that there will be modest impact on his operations under federal
assistance. The folks also met 85 - 90% of Kellogg’s demands. The
conclusion is that Kellogg now, is said not to oppose the turnover by City
Council to the feds. Will he support the turnover is the big question and
ROGER will seek an answer to that question today on the radio.

HISTORY has a tendency to get re-writ so may we remind (boss won’t, I
will) that it was on ROGER’S radio show that the premise first appeared
that Kellogg very badly needed to sit down with Congressman Duncan Hunter
(a solid supporter of Our Cross) and folks from the U.S. Parks Department
to get info from face of the horse. ROGER further (on the radio) suggested
that our Cross Committee pay Kellogg’s way to D.C. for the meeting. All
that happened. Not looking for credit but history ought to be factual.

Meanwhile we await a letter from the Parks Department to Duncan Hunter,
putting in writing the matters discussed in D.C. That letter will then be
transmitted to members of the San Diego City Council, who have been forced
by our petition drive to re-vote on turning Our Cross over to the feds.
That re-vote happens on May 17th. ROGER will likely take his show live to
Golden Hall where council will meet on that date. We have high hopes that
at least one council person will change vote and allow the Memorial and
Our Cross to be deeded to the feds.

We invite you to join us on May 17th. We’ll need your support. It would be
nice to get this job done. We’ll go to the ballot if necessary. We’d
prefer council folks would get smart and vote YES and get back to keeping
out of jail and putting up barricades so the citizenry can’t get into City
Hall with pitchforks and all like that.

HEADS UP TOMORROW…the first legal day that candidates for SD City Mayor
can pick up nominating papers. A statement of declaration. Between then
and May 27th candidates must come up with 500 bucks and the signatures of
200 registered voters in the city of San Diego. Former Police Chief Jerry
Sanders got off the blocks like a rocket. He’s doing daily press releases
and appearing on every radio and tv show east of the Rockies. Other
declared candidate Donna Frye has been most silent. ROGER trying to get
her to come and get some free air on his programme. She prefers radio
hosts that are less politically savvy and more inclined to be responsive
to hugs and ear nibbles. That way she avoids tough questions. Most local
talk show hosts are clueless (sorry).

Say what you will about Dick Murphy, but he came on ROGER’S show and faced
the music. It was seldom a pleasant experience but he came back time and
again. And he got the chance to make his case, agree with it or not. Donna
doesn’t have that courage. Jerry Sanders has appeared on the show. Tells
you a little something about the field as it exists this date.

MUTTERINGS

**COUPLE OF HOMEFRONT SAN DIEGO ITEMS….first, if you want to donate a car
to HFSD for a military family, be advised that the new IRS regs that
restrict the tax deduction donors can take doesn’t apply to us. The IRS
regs deal with firms and/or charities that solicit for donated cars, then
sell those cars at auction, often at a deflated price so that the charity
doesn’t get full value of the vehicle. There’s also some skim for the
auction and administration of the vehicle processing.

When you donate a car or truck to Homefront San Deigo, there is no sale.
No auction. We take your vehicle, get it to one of our local auto shops
for bumper to bumper inspection and fix-up..and then we take a military
family to the DMV, change title and give the family the keys to the car.
Donors get to deduct “full market value,” for the vehicle. (that’s the
price you’d be able to sell the car for if you put a for sale sticker on
it at the curb in front of your house.)

We do need cars. We have a lot of lower ranked enlisted families with
husbands deployed who need reliable and trusty transportation. We have a
back up of families on our vehicle request list. So if you are buying a
new car, have one sitting in the yard, want a great tax deduction and want
to help a Warrior Family here in Homeport San Diego. Call please. We’ll
send a tow truck, work with you on the paper work and put a military wife
and kids into your car. 866-424-9467.

AND PLEASE CHECK BEFORE you get involved in charities that say they
benefit military families. ROGER launched his Warrior Family effort weeks
after 911-01 and we’ve learned a thing or two over time. Our premise is
that we’ve adopted every single San Diego County family with a Warrior
deployed. When we say “we,” we mean this community. Mostly we try to serve
our families by appealing to this audience to get the job done. Fix a car
for us, donate food for families, buy us pillows for Warriors at Balboa
Hospital, give us cars, give us a hospital bed….as much as possible we try
to serve families without spending money.

Homefront San Diego is not and will never be an employment grab bag. Our
volunteers are actually volunteers. They get paid nothing. So when a
dollar comes our way that dollar (all 100 cents) gets to a military
family. We don’t take out for salary or light bills, or phone bills or
employee insurance and health and medical benefits. (heck by the time you
skim all that crap off your dollar the military family would be lucky to
get a dime). So ask if the military charity will spend some, part or all
of your donation on charity employee wages. You may still want to give to
that military charity but know beforehand how much of your money will
benefit a family and how much will benefit somebody who makes a lot of
money off veterans and military folks. Ask to see the payroll numbers.

And be wary of folks selling stuff. Like wrist bracelets or pins and all
like that. And be careful about charities that are very obvious about
asking for your money. Some folks have to fund raise full time to make
payroll.

Now that don’t mean that Homefront San Diego may not ask for your money at
some point in time…we did once to buy 40 TV sets for Wounded Warriors at
Balboa Hospital. You responded and as soon as we had enough to buy the Tvs
we stopped asking. We ain’t asking now because you’ve (without our asking)
given us a few bucks and the bank account we have with the Navy League of
San Diego (our 501c3 partner) has enough in it to respond to military
family needs.

We’re gonna beat you up constantly for baby formula, diapers, canned food,
cars, gas cards and phone cards and fill in the blank. Some military
charities don’t want that stuff cause they can’t meet payroll with it. We
want it because our FAMILIES need that stuff!! (sermon over, sorry)

**ROGER DOES RUSH NEXT MONDAY MAY 16TH….9a - 12n planet wide and then the
local show at 3p - 6p. Long day but always great fun. Most of the nation
gets real startled when ROGER starts telling tales from the left coast.
Knowing, of course, that what happens here don’t stay here. It migrates to
the east…yeeeech!!!

**WE’RE WORKING with local folks to help set up a Minuteman effort along
our border here in San Diego County. Happens in a couple of months. We’re
being supportive, offering advice and we hope to broadcast from the border
as local Minutemen take to the field.

Fun to note that folks are telling us not to use the term Minutemen with
regard to our local effort. They want it called Border Watch. Huh?
Minutemen it shall be. Watch this!!

**LADY WHO WORKS AT THE FRONT DESK AT MY DENTIST OFFICE is a sweetheart.
Always nice to see a pretty smiling face as you are about to face the
drill or when you depart with face all froze up and floppy lips.

She has a son who is in the U.S. Army. 10th Mountain Division up at Camp
Drum. Been to Iraq once and set to return. I always ask about him. She’s
always worried but always so proud.

Yesterday I asked and her face lit up big time. “He’s made sergeant,” she
said. And “he’s only 21 years old.” She’s got a picture of her man right
behind her desk. I guess now that I can take SP-4 Karolyn Smith (she’s
back from Iraq) off my prayer list I should add the Sergeant. I’ll do that
today.
