(stay home) A MUCH BALLYOOED OPEN BORDER event in downtown San Diego this morning was a dud. Camera crews from San Diego and Mexico outnumbered the folks who showed up to bad mouth the Governor, the Minutemen and talkradio. The basic theme never changes: people trying to break into America (or being coyotied) are getting real thirsty and bruised up and even dying. Which is kinda like being real sympathetic because the guy who burgles your home cuts himself while breaking your window for entry. Mostly a bust but with all the TV cameras present the tale will be overplayed and hyped and lead local newscasts. Next to blood on the street this stuff is lifeblood of local TV news(?). Several counter protestors did show up. I figure if they had 24 folks demanding free transport across the border, we had about 12 or more folks saying that is suicide. Thanks to all who did show up to counter demo. At the very least it forced the media to take our pictures to provide some balance to the nutjobs. Oh, and the press release sent out by the “we’re dying,” crowd promised a guest appearance by former SD Police Chief and now U.S. Marshal David Bejarano. He was a no show, most likely cause his bosses told him he works for the feds and he should shut up and get back to escorting prisoners from court to jail house. Too fun!! I attended the event to shoot some digital pix. I wore my Hold Their Feet To The Fire XI shirt with President Bush on the front and his quote: “We’ve gotta enforce our border.” I got a lot of ugly looks. But some folks looked confused. Many don’t read English. I was tempted to shout, “La Migra.” MUTTERINGS **PROMISED THANKS TO SEVERAL PARTNERS who helped make HTFTTF XI happen. We’ll make good on that promise here. Foremost among those who worked for months to plot, plan and make the citizen-lobby effort work, FAIR. The Federation For American Immigration Reform. Back in January I called the President of FAIR Dan Stein and asked for his groups support. FAIR is perhaps the largest and most respected of the immigration reform groups in USA. Dan said yes. FAIR then devoted a staff of nearly a dozen folks from its chapters across America to coordinate, plan and organize. Fair set up a press center at Radio Row in D.C. Helped us with press contacts and worked to provide newsmaker guests for our 18 radio hosts. The group also spent 35-thousand dollars on radio ads in major markets to urge radio listeners to join us in D.C. Kudos also due to 911 Families for a Secure America. Some 600 members of families that lost loved ones on 911-01 are part of this group. Each member recognizes the need to secure our border and prevent another Islamic killer attack on America. The Coalition for a Secure Drivers License partnered with us. We got website help from The Eagle Forum. Numbers USA was helpful. And we partnered as well with Move America Forward. (Sobbie from their staff was tremendous in helping us work with radio hosts and booking guests while in D.C.) And finally ROGER partnered with the Minutemen, many of whom came from the Arizona border to be with us in D.C. to fight for secure borders. They were our heroes during our citizen-lobby effort. The result of these partnerships is that a little ole radio talk show in San Diego, California was able to put together a national network of citizens, radio show hosts and immigration reform activists that startled lawmakers in D.C for three days. We aided in the passage of HR 418 which clamps down on illegal drivers licenses, tightens amnesty regs and closes a stretch of the border fence at Smugglers Gulch in San Diego. The effort was historic. We all worked at it for months (since January) and the hard work paid off with a flawless exercise in people power. Next time some special thanks including a tribute to a San Diego company that sponsored Hold Their Feet To The Fire XI…we ain’t a union and we don’t get gummint grants to do this citizenship stuff. **ALAN BERSIN….Arnold taps Al to head up CA ed department. Nearly dumped a good splash of Jack Daniels in my lap when I read that headline. The guy was a total bust in San Diego as head of SD Unified and that qualifies him to get promoted to state job? Mostly folks get fired (Al had to leave early in SD) when they are incompetent. In gummint you get promoted. I shud have gotten a gummint job years ago. **BIG MIKE getting all the blame. To hear the good(?) folks down at Ye Ole City Hall in SD City all of the city woes can be placed at Mike Aguirre’s doorstep. Mayor Dick Murphy resigning is Mike’s fault. City could have fixed all its problems except for Big Mike’s interference. And now Big Mike tosses another wrench in machinery. Today’s news rag tells that Mike may hold up city budget unless city increases payments to the pension fund. And legal folks say Mike has that authority under the city charter. From the ponder that we do, council and manager and pension folks don’t like being told they can’t do stuff even if it is illegal. Now comes the new gunslinger in town toting a law book and the culprits are livid. In a western movie this is where the crooked townsfolk hire up a paid fast gun to set up a showdown at high noon. Or is it where the Indians attack the town, I forget. **OH AND is this true…over the transom comes data that suggests that the guy who heads the city fire union is getting paid by the city at a fire captains rate, while also pulling down wage from fire union. That can’t be happening can it? Well of course it can. There is no outrage that cannot be perpetrated upon the citizens of Finest City.
