5-5-05
(do we have a lottery?)

TODAY DATE A GOOD SET OF NUMBERS TO BET? Can you bet that way in
California? Folks back east in Rhode Island would get nuts when numbers
like these presented themselves. Some would bet the same numbers every
day. Their system. Gambling a way of life in many places of USA. Folks buy
a ticket every day on the way to or from work. Most don’t spend a lot at
one time but keep buying a ticket a day or on a regular basis. Mostly blue
collar folks looking to get out of the factory. (do we have factories any
more?)

Gambling is very big hereabouts, including Dehesa Valley. But folks have
to truck a decent piece to get here and we suspect they spend more than
the price of a daily lottery ticket. Looking at the thousands of cars that
transit Dehesa Road (now renamed Memorial Hiway in honor of all the
roadside graves) folks who come out here to take a chance are really
taking a chance. Cars are mostly old ones, bumped up and near brokt down.
And they are in a hurry to get to the Indian casino. Drive like a bat out
of heck. And they must either work shifts or have no shift cause traffic
can be a bear on the road way past midnight and near the crack of dawn.

And the tribe is doing something major at that end of the valley. Big
earthmovers plowing up hill tops and horse pastures. I should call a
couple of long time locals to find out what’s happening but I kind of like
to be curious. I try not to drive that way out of the valley anymore or at
least as infrequently as possible. It’s dangerous.

I think it was better when folks just picked up a lottery ticket at the 7
& 11 on the way to work.

MUTTERINGS

**CORRECTION X TWO….yesterday I invited you to counter demonstrate this
Friday and I suggested the date would be May 9th. There ain’t no Friday
May 9th this year. It would be tomorrow May 6th. Here again the event that
we need to counter:

PLEASE JOIN US THIS FRIDAY AS WE HOLD A UNITY RALLY AND SAY NO TO
MINUTEMEN, NO TO ARNOLD AND NO TO RACISM (11:00 am in front of State
Building 1401 Front Street (Ash & Front Street Downtown San Diego)

We also spelled wrong the name of the CA lawmaker who is behind this Open
Border appeal. Her real name would be Lori Saldana. I know we ask you to
do a lot of angry citizen stuff, so we won’t push this, but if you happen
to be in the area tomorrow morning, stop and join us. Friends of the
Border Patrol will be there along with folks from the Republican National
Hispanic Association and others.

**HTFTTF XI THANKS…we’ve thanked our 500 or so listeners who traveled to
D.C. with us last week. We’ve thanked the 18 or so radio talkshow hosts
from around America who broadcast nonstop and we paid homage to the great
folks at Talkers Magazine and Talk Radio News Service who set up our Radio
Row. Today some folks behind the scenes who helped us organize and be
effective as citizen-lobby teams.

After ten previous trips to hold lawmakers accountable in both D.C. and
Sacramento we’ve gotten pretty good at marshalling our resources. Kudos go
to Dennis and Diane Snyder. They of Escondido Charter High School and
regulars on every trip we’ve made. Diane is kinda the Hold Their Feet To
The Fire historian. And, as in past trips, this duo accepted the task of
forming our 500 or so listener-lobbyists into lobby teams. I think we had
40+ teams this time. About 5 or more on each team. And each team was
assigned a group of House and Senate members to lobby. To make it easier
(the capital grounds are large and there’s a lot of marble and concrete)
Denny and Diane assigned teams to lawmakers based on building geography.
We tried to keep an assigned team in a single building (I.e. Rayburn) and
in some cases on a single floor to cut down on trucking all over the
place.

Dennis and Diane not only did the team assignments for ROGER’S listeners
but also for those who came up with John & Ken at KFI and our other radio
hosts. And they also did the lobby tutorial for all of our listeners both
in San Diego, LA and in D.C, ably assisted by Jim Daugherty.

This kind of professional organizing guaranteed that we reached every
singled elected official in both houses of congress. I suspect that
professional lobbyists are calling Dennis and Diane to learn how they do
it.

Jim Daugherty is kind of like our video historian. He used to teach
audio-video at ECH. Now he freelances. And he’s a regular on our HTFTTF
trips. He video tapes our trips and tracks our lobby teams as they
confront lawmakers. This trip he taped our rally in front of the White
House on Monday April 25th. I was talking with a producer from Fox and
Friends setting up a Tuesday appearance by ROGER on that morning TV show.
I asked if Fox had covered our rally so that they’d have b-roll for the
interview with ROGER. The producer said no, they had missed the rally. So
I called Jim and he took his tape over to Fox and let them dub his stuff
which Fox then used during the interview with ROGER. We’ve gotten so good
at this that we even provide services to news services. Yikes.

I keep saying that our historic trip to D.C. last week to lobby for Secure
Borders could not have happened without a lot of folks. Without Dennis,
Diane and Jim none of our 11 trips would have worked right nor been as
productive as they have been. THANKS.

Tomorrow, kudos to our partners.

**SPANISH LESSON

Gran Apertura = Grand Opening
Sabado = Saturday
Comida Mexicana = Mexican food
Para Mas information = For More Information
Proximamente = Coming Soon

Bone up cause there is a bill in the CA legislature that is called Spanish
Only that will make Mexican talk the official lingo of California. Chances
of passage are very good. I’m starting to carry a little translation book
with me so I can understand what folks are saying in the supermarket. The
phone company is also going to be helpful. They are changing their phone
messages…soon when you get connected a voice will say: For Spanish press
One, For Spanish press Two.

**WE ARE A NATION AT WAR and our media is enthralled with Runaway Bride,
American Idol and Desperate Housewives. That’s a way low common
denominator. Gummint education is working!!

HOMEFRONT SAN DIEGO…866-424-9467...Our community commitment to the
families of Warriors deployed in the war against Islamic killers. In
recent days we took a whole bunch of food to a family that was hungry.
We’ve got like a half dozen cars in repair shops for military families
(most of our shops either do the work for us for free or at cost). Today
KC our lead volunteer will do lunch with folks at the Thursday Club (they
do an annual rummage sale in Balboa Park) and accept a check from that
group for Homefront San Diego. On Monday KC is up in Poway to accept a
check from Reno Construction after a benefit golf tournament. Every dime
and dollar goes to benefit military families…none of our volunteers get
paid!! Overhead = Zero.

Listen daily on ROGER’S show as we report on HFSD success stories, laud
merchants and business folks in our community who have helped our families
and put out the word for help needed by specific military families.
