RECALL OF MAYOR PLANNED A former Murphy supporter about his plans to launch a full scale recall in June. Phil Hart voted for Murphy in 2000. Now, he's beginning an effort to have him recalled. "Thousands upon thousands of people now realize what's going on at city hall. They're not happy about it, and I think they are now ready for a change," Hart said. Hart will officially begin his recall effort on June 9. Click here for full story. MT SOLEDAD CROSS PETITIONS CERTIFIED Registrar of Voters officials have certified more than 72,000 valid signatures on petitions to save the cross at the Mt. Soledad War Memorial. A minimum of 33,000 valid signatures were required to force the San Diego City Council to reverse its decision to remove the cross at the war memorial on Mt. Soledad or face a public vote on the matter. Mayor Murphy says the council will review the vote May 17. If the council doesn't reverse its decision, a special election is required for voters to decide whether the towering cross should remain on Mount Soledad.
GAS PRICES HIT NEW HIGH Gasoline prices in the San Diego area have hit another record high. The average self-serve price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is now at $2.64 in the San Diego area. The Utilility Action Consumers Network (UCAN) predicts gasoline could reach $3 dollars a gallon by summer and is calling on the governor to declare a state of emergency. Click here for gas price updates. NEW FOCUS ON REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS Law enforcement officials in San Diego County are reminding parents to check the state's web site listing registered sex offenders and where they live. This follows the news registered sex offenders in Florida have now admitted to kidnapping and killing a 9-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl in recent weeks. To access the location, name and photos of possible registered sex offenders in your neighborhood, go to the Megans Law web site. Click here for web site. |
