SCREWIN’ WITH BIG MIKE
(stop it already)

MICHAEL AGUIRRE HAS RUFFLED FEATHERS in serious fashion down at Ye Ole
City Hall in San Diego City. Mayor and council, DA and law officers with
five hundred stars on their shoulders are panty wadded and wiping spittle
from their faces. The upset is that the City Attorney is supposed to
puppet. Council and Mayor make arms move and fake mouth go up and down and
out come words voiced by the guy doing the strings down below the stage
set. Casey Gwinn is the model for this puppet act. Basically what folks
want is a city attorney who keeps his/her mouth shut and when asked to
speak reads from a city hall script.

WELL CITIZENS OF SAN DIEGO DON’T WANT THAT!! And so THEY ELECTED Big Mike.
Get that? Elected. His mandate comes from the PEOPLE and not from city
hall. The voters in San Diego (Big Mike was elected just like the
Mayor…from all city districts, not one) want him to find the boxes of
pension documents that were hidden away. They want him to cooperate with
federal probes of pension and union wrongdoing. They want him to hold feet
to the fire and man the bully pulpit.

THE HELL WITH THE PEOPLE!! How dare Big Mike actually be a City Attorney.
We’ll take away the powers of his office. We’ll deny him access to city
cable TV channel. We’ll disparage him in public and we’ll take valuable
time away from hiding documents and preparing our civil and criminal
defenses to attack Big Mike.  Huh?

There is a bottom line and that is stated above. Michael Aguirre
represents the voters of the City of San Diego. Unlike Dick Murphy, Big
Mike’s election is not contested. He is not half a City Attorney or one
third of a City Attorney. He has the public mandate. And from here in
Dehesa Valley it would appear that folks mess with Big Mike at risk of
defying the citizenry.

Our DA is too busy being in parades to deal with small crime prosecution.
And P. Lamonte Ewell needs to get back to being resigned instead of
denying Big Mike access to the city cable TV system.

Much of this may self resolve. If all of the civil and criminal probes
currently underway bear fruit Big Mike’s adversaries may poof!!

MUTTERINGS

**ROGER’S SHOW WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE IN SPANISH? We’re working on the
technical aspects right now. ROGER don’t speak Spanish, I don’t, Angela
don’t and Macarena can only “get by,” despite her USD education. So there
is a translation thing that has to happen. But we know our show is big in
Tijuana and we want to capture that audience. The process is likely to
involve a computer translation program.

We expect a number of new advertisers to sign on to the Spanish version of
the show. Car dealers selling 52 Chevy’s and home builders who make houses
out of cardboard. And all like that.

But there is another motive. Since we’re all gonna have to speak Spanish
in a few months this broadcast will act as a tutorial for those of us
learning Spanish.

We learn in this weeks San Diego Business Journal that local TV station
KNSD is gonna do Spanish too. That’s gonna help. Especially as we move our
southern border up to about San Francisco. HELP!!

**TRUE STORY…Univision was in ROGER’S office yesterday to do a story on
his leading 18 or so talk radio hosts to D.C. April 23 - 28th for Hold
Their Feet To The Fire XI to reform American immigration policy. The TV
camera guy set up and the lady reporter started her interview. Talking and
taping continued for about 30 minutes when the TV photo guy suddenly sez:
“I don’t think I am recording.” Huh? Yep. So they begin again. And well
into the second interview the camera guy sez the same thing. I think by
about the third or fourth try the camera guy figured out how the camera
worked. Not really sure tho if the guy ever got an image.

**SDBJ also tells me this week that two new airlines are firing up at
Lindbergh Field. Discounters and direct flight folks. I hadda read the
story twice because my eyes hadda be lying. Lindbergh is too small and
outdated. Can’t possibly be serving more flyers and more airlines. Ain’t
we got an authority looking for a new airport site cause Lindbergh is in
the crapper? Humm?

Truth be known Lindbergh will be too small for the airline traffic
projections. The inside word is that by the year 3001 the airport will be
outdated and have to be re-located. We’d better do something quick.  HUH?

**SAN DIEGO TOURISM IN THE CRAPPER? Tourism folks are like most business
folks. Business is always good, but could always be better. No business
person worth salt will tell you the truth..it’s not good for business.

But a regular reading of the SDBJ (between the lines in most cases)
reveals that all is not well down by ye ole ballpark. Lousy weather has
cut into hotel bookings and downtown eatery profits. You can’t smoke here.
We’re too close to Mexico. Enron By the Sea headlines don’t help. Gas
prices are killing the chambers boast that we are a driving destination.
Our water is brown most of the time (wonder why that is?).

But we get insider info on a comeback campaign specifically regarding the
brown water to surf and swim in…Chamber has a new ad campaign that
features nearly unclad womens and bulked up boys on surf boards in brown
water. The ad copy explains that brown water from Mexico isn’t dangerous
or unhealthily. Ad cites a medical study done at Harvard and in
conjunction with Scripps Ocean School…the research finds that Mexicans eat
a lot of spicy food and that kills bacteria in human waste from Mexico
that makes San Diego ocean water brown. So the brown water is actually
more healthful than blue or green water which is full of fish poop…and
fish don’t eat spicy foods.  If the brown water has a salsa taste it’s
okay. Surfs Up Dudes!!
