ADDS:

NO ADDS

- It's a KOOL 99.3 Twin Spin Weekend!

- Histar.com finally got rid of its stupid Star Zone. This is the last time I'll mention it. The Star Zone robs your bandwidth by installing spyware, and won't work in non-Windows AND non-Internet Explorer (which is dangerous anyway). Don't use Outlook or Internet Explorer because of security issues. Microsoft can't do software right.

- New Format / New Rotation

Have you heard the new format and new playlist on FRSD 96.9FM? Our station got bigger and bigger, expanding from a cd in a walkman up to our current library of around 20,000 songs, all of which, by the way, RULE.

But the complaints were trickeling in for quite sometime, that something was wrong. Less and less people were tuning in, and even some of the DJs themselves weren't listening as much, because so much crazy stuff was coming up.

So we had to figure out how to keep our crazy music, but make sure the station sounded "listenable" at the same time. And this is how we figured it out:

* All DJs get 50 songs, per month, which go into the general rotation which plays when no DJ is in the station. These 50 songs can be anything that they want to put in, as long as it's under 9 minutes in length, doesn't contain commercials, and doesn't sound like a radio test pattern.

* All San Diego music, meaning music made by San Diego bands and artists, past and present, plays every 24 songs, which is how many DJs we have. This is in addition to the fact that any DJ can put local music into his or her 50 for the month to play, and means that San Diego music will always get airtime, simply because that's what you do when you're a local radio station and don't suck.

* Every month, and at no shorter interval, we can switch out our 50 songs, or leave in the current 50.

* This has cut down on our rotation by about 90%, from around 11,000 songs to about 1200. Please note that our DJs can and certainly are playing any music they like during their shows. This change to the format only pertains to what's going on when no DJ is present in the studio (which is generally mid day, middle of the night), and no one is in the station.

What we've noticed is that we tend to have a "best of" approach now, where instead of loading up our playlist with every song by any band that we like, we now have to pick the best tracks by however many bands we want to squeeze in. The reports we've been hearing back are awesome, and all the DJs are reporting that the music is sounding back to kick ass again.

Don't worry if you think we'll be playing the same stuff too much either. Ballpark us at having 1200 songs in the rotation (which is a hell of a lot more than any other station in town, which normally hovers around 10%-20% of that number), multiply it by the average song length of three minutes, and not counting call signs, DJs shows (where they can play whatever they want from the 20,000 or more), and news shows, we have a total of 60 hours (two and a half days) of music. So, it's possible and probable that if you listened all the time, every few days you might here the same kick ass songs from time to time.

Local San Diego bands, make sure you're sending in your CD's to Johnny Defiant. You can find our mailing address on the contact page. Your music will play probably once or twice a week, at various times, but rest assured, you will get airplay simply because you are a San Diego band. And, if a DJ actually likes your music (there are a lot of great bands from our town), then he or she will probably play it that much more often.
