Dr. Demento Plays Song With the "F" Word (10:40pm October 10, 2004)

Looks like Carla Ulbrich beat Howard Stern to the race to get their utterance of the "F"-word on the satellite by almost 15 months.

The history-making Dr. Demento playing a song with the "F"-word in it occurred late Sunday night, but as always, the revoultion isn't being televised on the radio.

Dr. Demento had it played on satellite.

XM Radio's channel 40, Deep Tracks, featuring the Best of the Dr. Demento Show on Sunday Nights, aired a Dr. Demento show from June 13, 2004, featuring the #1 song of that week, Carla Ulbrich's "If I Had The Copyright (The F-Word Song)" uncensored with no bleeping of the word that forms when you take the first letters of Van Halen's album "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge," which could be where the F-word came from anyway.

The original June 13 airing of the show on terrestrial radio stations played, of course, the edited version of Carla Ulbrich's "F-word" song.

Though the FCC can't allow the terrestrial broadcasters to air programming featuring the F-word, satellite radio may air material containing the F-word in any context because satellite radio, like cable TV, is a private service paid by consumers.

Jeff Morris, a long time Dr. Demento website author on his space on the Internet, said that XM 151, which also aired the same show the day before, did not air that Carla Ulbrich song (because XM 151 is Laugh Tracks and is not an XL channel where XM chooses to allow F-word material to air), as Laugh Tracks is designed to be more of a family channel. Instead, Morris said that the #1 song on XM 151 was replaced with another #1 song, "The Liar Sleeps Tonight", a popular anti-Bush novelty song by Mr. Whitekeys and the Fabulous Spamtones, which aired twice on that XM 151 airing late Saturday night.

Morris says that he's not 100% sure this is the first time "that F-word" has aired on an XM Dr. Demento show.

He also says that it wasn't the first time XM 151 has changed the show. They removed "The End" by Hot Waffles from XM-68 (the first show they aired).

The F-word can be heard on many of the XL channels on XM Radio. Subscribers can choose to have channels blocked out from their tuning boxes by calling XM Radio and requesting to delete the XL channels from their list of services for no charge.

Also that weekend, Carla Ulbrich was a studio guest on the syndicated version of the Dr. Demento Show, heard on four broadcast radio stations that stream on the Internet such as WLUP 97.9 Chicago (http://www.wlup.com/). You can visit Carla Ulbrich's website at http://www.carlau.com/ and buy some of her albums including the CD single with both versions of "If I Had The Copyright (The F-Word Song)." The song is now getting played on XM radio's comedy channels. Please request it at xmcomedy@xmradio.com
