Where Were The Stations in 1994? (July 25, 2004)

Hard to believe that ten years went by so fast. Many radio station buyouts, mergers, and location moves happened in San Diego county, with a few North County stations getting bigger prescences along the way.

First off.

KKLQ-AM 600 was once paired with KKLQ-FM 106.5 on Gibbs Drive. Now, KKLQ-FM is downtown owned by Univision, and KOGO 600 is housed in the CCSD building, after once taking a brief residence on Murphy Canyon Road.

XTRA 690 was on Pacific Highway with 91X (XETRA-FM). Now 91X is in the CCSD building. XTRA is partially in the CCSD with the rest of it principally as part of KXTA 1150 in Los Angeles. One station run by a building in Los Angeles and partially out of San Diego. Nothing new to 690. Mighty 690 in 1982 was billed as a Los Angeles station out of TJ to get more advertising revenue.

KFMB-AM 760 and KFMB-FM 100.7 are still on Engineer Rd.

KECR-AM 910 is still housed somewhere in El Cajon.

AM 1000 was housed on Laguna Drive in Carlsbad with KKOS 95.9. AM 1000 is now on Astor. More on KKOS in a moment.

KURS-AM 1040 is still in Chula Vista.

KSDO 1130 was on Murphy Canyon Road. They were once owned by Gannett, which was bought by Jacor, then Clear Channel, then Chase Radio Partners where the station was once housed in the CCSD building. Now owned by Hi-Favor Broadcasting, it moved to who knows where?

Compass' KCBQ-AM 1170 was housed in Santee with KCBQ-FM 105.3 (now KPRI 102.1). Now owned by Salem, it's housed with KPRZ in University City, which is NOT a city!

KPRZ 1210 was housed in San Marcos. It's now in University City.

KSON 1240 was on Murray Canyon Road with KSON-FM 97.3. I'm not sure if that station is still in that location.

KGMG-AM 1320 was in Oceanside. It's now run by Palomar College as KKSM.

KPOP 1360 and KGB 101.5 are still together, first on Engineer Road, then moved into the Kearny Villa road housing with KIOZ and KOGO, then they all moved to CCSD in 2002.

AM 1450 was housed in Escondido with 92.1. 1450 is on Aston with KCEO 1000.

XHTZ (Z90) was in Chula Vista under Califormula. Now it's in the CCSD building.

91X was on Pacific Highway with XTRA 690. Now 91X is in the CCSD building.

XHRM 92.5 was housed in National City. Now it's in the CCSD building.

KECR-FM 93.3 was in El Cajon as a religious station housed with KECR-AM 910. Jacor bought it in 1995 and launched KHTS Channel 933 from the 91X/XTRA building in 1996. It's now in the CCSD building.

KFSD-FM 94.1 was once in Downtown. Nationwide bought it in 1996, then Jacor, bought it in 1998 and moved 94.1 into the 91X/XTRA building. It's now housed in the CCSD building.

KBEST 94.9 was once housed on Towne Centre Drive in University City. Now it's in the KSON-FM building on Murray Ridge.

XHKY-FM 95.7 (which moved to 99.3) was in Chula Vista. It was part of the Califormula Radio Group. Now it's KOOL Oldies 99.3 in the CCSD building.

95.9 KKOS Carlsbad is now 95.7 KUSS in the CCSD building. In between, 95.7 was once in the 91X/XTRA building on Pacific Highway when Jacor purchased the station in 1998.

KYXY 96.5 is still in its present Linda Vista Rd. location.

KSON 97.3 is still on Murray Canyon Rd.

KIFM 98.1 was housed on Noble Drive. It's now located on Murray Canyon Road with two other stations I'll name later in this report.

Rock 102.1 (as KIOZ-FM) was on Kearny Villa Road. It's now Rock 105.3 in the CCSD building.

KCLX 102.9 was once on Murphy Canyon Road with KSDO-AM. Now KCLX is Viva owned by Univision and housed downtown with La Nueva.

Sunny 103.7 (as KJQY) was on Broadway. It's now KPLN and lives in the KYXY building.

Compass' KCBQ-FM 105.3, however, once in the KCBQ-AM building in 1994, became KXST 102.1 Oceanside in a swap with KIOZ 102.1 Oceanside, which became Rock 105.3 San Diego. KXST is now KPRI Encinitas on Shoreham Drive.

In 1994, we once had these pairings: KKLQ-AM 600/KKLQ-FM 106.5, KECR-AM 910/KECR-FM 93.3, KCEO-AM 1000/KKOS 95.9, KSDO-AM 1130/KCLX 102.9, KCBQ-AM 1170/KCBQ-FM 105.3, KSON-AM 1240/KSON-FM 97.3, KGMG-AM 1320/KIOZ 102.1, KSPA 1450/KOWF 92.1.

These pairings in 1994 still exist today:" XTRA 690/XETRA-FM 91.1, KFMB-AM 760/KFMB-FM 100.7, KPOP 1360/KGB 101.5

Just about every San Diego AM station had one FM station. The notable exceptions were KPRZ 1210 and XPRS 1090.

Hope that covers most of the stations in the area at the time.

Backwaves: The Readers Strike Back! (July 26, 2004)

Time to open up the mailbag and see what the readers have to say.

From William McCabe: Great trip into 1994, but you left out some of these:

KKLQ-AM was on Gibbs, but in 1994, when Par Broadcasting, owners of KIOZ 102.1 and KGMG 1320 bought the KKLQ-AM/FM combo, the stations moved to Kearny Villa Road, and KKLQ-AM was renamed KOGO, the frequency's old call letters. When Jacor bought a few other stations, they moved KOGO to Murphy Canyon where KSDO-AM is housed. Jacor also moved KPOP there when Jacor sold what used to be KCLX to Heftel (now bought by Univision). When Clear Channel built the current CCSD Granite Ridge facility in 2002, KOGO moved there along with the 11 others, so KOGO in eight years' time moved from one facility to another three times!

92.1 in Escondido was paired with 1450 and owned by Art Astor. When Astor bought KCEO (the owners of KCEO dealt KUPR 95.7 to Nationwide), Astor moved 92.1 and 1450 into the Laguna Drive facility in Carlsbad. In 2002, Astor moved them all to Aston. In 2003, Astor sold 92.1 to Jefferson-Pilot who took 92.1 as a translator of KSON-FM.

Par's KIOZ 102.1 Oceanside I guess was housed with 1320 in Oceanside, then moved to Kearny Villa around 1993 I think. Par bought KKLQ-AM/FM in 1994. Compass's KCBQ-AM/FM needed to be sold due to financial hardships on the broadcaster. In early 1996, when there was still a four-station limit for a single broadcaster in town, Par donated AM 1320 to Palomar College who turned it into a broadcast outlet for their longtime cable-only radio station, and swapped FM 102.1 for Compass' FM 105.3 transmitting facilities so that Par could at long last put "Rock" onto a local transmitter covering all of San Diego; while Compass got money to cure its debt load, and a weaker FM 102.1 from out of Oceanside. Compass operated the former KCBQ-FM as the new KXST from Mission Gorge Road in Santee while Par Broadcasting moved in their newly-acquired KCBQ-AM into the Kearny Villa building, but "Rock" reaimed their microwaves from 102.1's transmitter to 105.3's.

Jacor eventually bought Par, then Jacor owned or operated 91X, XTRA, KHTS, KCBQ, KIOZ, KOGO, and Q106. They bought KSDO-AM and 102.9 in 1996. But when they bought KGB and KPOP, they sold KCBQ since eight (91X and XTRA didn't count) was the maximum. It's a mess and I lost track afterwards.

Thanks for a blast from the past.
