Three TJ Stations Change Frequencies (June 26, 2004)

The three Bonilla-run Mexican radio stations from the Tijuana area have switched frequencies due to the SCT (the Mexican equivalent of the FCC) and the FCC have agreed how to fix the problems the three radio stations are causing to other nearby stations.

Here is what's going on:

XEKTT from 560 to 1700 kHz, 10 kW fulltime
XESS from 780 to 620 kHz, 5 kW fulltime
XESDD from 920 to 1030 kHz, 5 kW fulltime

XESDD couldn't get on the air because there is already a 920 kHz station operating from Ensenada, but has yet to sign on on its new reassigned 1030 kHz frequency. XEKTT already moved to 1700 while XESS on 620 has been on and off.

What's weird about the agreement is the fact that Bonilla has agreed to move one of the stations to 1030kHz, right next to his KURS 1040 radio station broadcasting from 10 miles north of the border.

Yet another frequency has popped to life in TIJUANA as the troubles with interference for U.S. AMs continues, with the 620 AM frequency suddenly sprouting a station this week. As is the case with 1700 AM, which came to life this week with the programming heard for several months on 560 AM, the broadcasting is intermittent on 620, but the signal appears to be running at relatively high power and nondirectional.

As of early THURSDAY (6/24), 1700 was back on and booming into SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, but 620 was off, returning later in the morning with a signal audible with some interference in coastal LOS ANGELES. Signals on 560, 780, and 920, the three controversial stations that have been broadcasting in recent months and interfering with Stateside stations, remain off the air for now. The programming appears to be from PACIFIC SPANISH NETWORK, the JAIME BONILLA-led company that owns Adult Standards-Talk KURS-A/SAN DIEGO and was reported to be operating the other three offending stations.

Commentary: yet, not one of them is bothering to play accordion punk! Bummer.

Additional info: A TJ station on 105.7 is currently not on the air judging from where I live North of I-8. North County listeners can get a Spanish 105.7...from Hemet, just 30 miles east of Temecula. East County listeners can get a translator for KWVE, but the origin of the transmitter on 105.7 there remains a mystery, possibly with no more power than 10 watts.
