2003 Proved TV a Mixed Medium Dec 31, 2003

Did a lot of television in 2003 suck? Sure -- but a lot of TV didn't suck this year, too, proving once again that a 500-channel universe has greatly improved the quality of the medium, even if it's raised the confusion level at the same time.

Aaron Barnhart's best moments of 2003 in TV. http://tinyurl.com/2p2c7

And here are the lowlights, conveniently spread over three days:

Monday: News blues. http://tinyurl.com/3fpne

Tuesday: That wasn't entertainment. http://tinyurl.com/2ca3l

Wednesday: Thanks for nothing, Channel 5. http://tinyurl.com/3gmqd

Meanwhile, TV Barn contributor Gary Dretzka looks back on the year of the DVD and concludes it could have been even better but for Hollywood's myopia thing.

The Wires (Dec 2003)

  • Kurt Hanson: Downloading is "burdensome" for the consumer and costly for the provider -- while streaming provides for the best in on-demand "portability" and efficiency. Those are the thoughts of Wharton Business School professor Peter S. Fader, who predicts that the streaming model will eventually win out over the "a la carte" and "subscription" download business models in online music. Also today in RAIN, why the holiday shopping season may have been a present for satellite radio stockholders.
  • NY Times: A federal appeals court ruled Friday the recording industry can't force Internet providers to identify subscribers swapping music online, dramatically setting back the industry's anti-piracy campaign.
Also from rronline.com: Appeals Court Reverses Verizon Decision..Saying that peer-to-peers are not equivalent to the central-server technology that existed when the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was written, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, DC today reversed a District Court ruling that ordered Verizon Communications to hand over the name of a suspected copyright infringer to the RIAA. The three-judge panel said the DMCA, which includes the expedited subpoena process the RIAA used to demand the Verizon customer's name, "betrays no awareness whatsoever that Internet users might be able directly to exchange files containing copyrighted works." Today's ruling calls into question the status of hundreds of RIAA lawsuits against accused infringers whose identities were acquired by way of DMCA subpoenas. The RIAA can still pursue the identities of suspected infringers, but it must now file suit and get a judge's approval of any subpoena. RIAA President Cary Sherman said that's going to lead to some changes: "[The ruling] unfortunately means we can no longer notify illegal file sharers before we file lawsuits against them to offer the opportunity to settle outside of litigation. Verizon is solely responsible for a legal process that will now be less sensitive to the interests of its subscribers who engage in illegal activity."
  • (read Stereophile) There's traditional AM and FM radio, there's XM and Sirius satellite radio, and there are various cable and satellite dish "radio" music services. And finally, there's HD Radio. Having invested over 10 years in development, and one year after gaining initial approval from the FCC, iBiquity Digital and several of its industry partners, including Texas Instruments, Philips, Kenwood, JVC, Onkyo, and Panasonic, plan to introduce HD Radio technology to the consumer market during the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 7
  • (read WINK TV) Pirate radio stations are popping on Southwest Florida airwaves. Stations 91.9 FM in Fort Myers and 100.5 FM in Naples both play explicit songs, feature raunchy DJs and are gaining a loyal following. The rap and hip hop stations aren't legal and don't follow FCC rules. Now, legitimate commercial stations are pressuring the FCC to take action. WAVV 101 FM in Naples says the broadcast from the pirate station interferes with its signal. Listeners expecting to hear EZ listening songs by Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand end up getting something much different. "They hear obscene language and obscene songs and they think we've changed formats," said WAVV FM engineer Al Baxa
  • NY Daily News: Local terrestrial broadcasters say they are unbothered by Sirius Satellite Radio's $220 million deal to carry play-by-play broadcasts of all National Football League games starting next season. The National Association of Broadcasters has often warned that Sirius and fellow satellite company XM want to compete directly with local radio. But local stations say they're not worried about this deal, in which Sirius will carry the full local broadcast for each NFL team, with local station IDs and ads. "We're fine with it," says spokeswoman Karen Mateo of Infinity, which carries the Giants on WFAN and is the biggest NFL rights-holder around the country. "People around the country will be hearing our game, promoting 'FAN."
  • Toronto Star: In New York City, citizen groups have reportedly banded together in a bid to banish the "All Christmas music format" from radio as a form of cruel and unusual punishment. We're talking about the endless, relentless, unceasing stark raving, maddening #%^&$#@ drip-drip-dripping akin to water torture. The longest-suffering victims are just-barely-pre-postal mall workers who cannot escape "Jingle Bells," which in-store systems begin playing in November and continue spewing until well after Christmas Day. Factoid: There are exactly 362 stations in the U.S. ù with no fewer than eight in the Manhattan area alone! ù that have adopted the All-Xmas format this year. We have it a little easier here in the T-Dot market because a single station ù 97.3 EZ Rock ù has grabbed the Toronto monopoly on the "All Santa, All The Time" format (
  • News Observer: As baby boomers get just a little too old for the taste of many radio advertisers, they may well ask: Will they still pitch me when I'm past 54? For years, radio advertisers have put by far the greatest effort into reaching listeners between the ages of 25 and 54, a demographic group well served by radio and also considered to be the prime working years. But now that the leading edge of the baby boomer generation - those born 1946-1964 - is entering the mid-50s, the radio industry is grappling with the challenge of how to convince advertisers that this very large chunk of the population is still worth paying money to reach. After all, boomers are different from other generations.
  • NY Times: Radio is awesome, isn't it? It's free, it's on whenever you want it, and you can choose from among eight or 10 stations. About the only people who could possibly complain about it, in fact, are people who have to listen to it. They'll tell you that the music you hear on the radio is mostly the same cloying pop junk, played over and over. That 20 minutes of every hour is ads, played over and over. And that as you drive, the signal comes and goes with the territory. Two years ago, two companies - XM and Sirius - came up with the same solution: pay radio. Each went to the trouble of blasting private satellites into orbit. Each beams 100 channels of clean, static-proof digital sound down to XM and Sirius receivers in the cars and home stereos of monthly subscribers. So why would people pay for radio, when they have a free alternative? Because satellite radio is fantastic - a cultural source unlike any other. It's so addictive, the Sirius manual actually refers to its customers as "users." Because the 100 channels are largely free of commercials, their program directors don't have to appeal to all the mainstream, all the time.
  • Remember Those Q106 Cards? - There was a time when all I listened to was pop radio. I was a card-carrying member of KPOP, a top-40 radio station in Sacramento, Calif. I'm not sure what my "listener ID card" was for, but it was cute -- black with hot pink and white call letters -- and it meant that I belonged (read the Gleaner)

  • http://www.talkradiodailynews.com - Paris Hilton is in line to inherit $28 million - but she won't even need it. The Hilton heiress, widely perceived as a spoiled floozy who never worked a day in her life, is actually proving very adept at making money, and lots of it. By next year, she'll likely have raked in some $10 million, experts predict. The deal offers are pouring in. Some are routine fashion packages, bit movie parts and lucrative TV commercials in Japan, but she's also getting some kinky offers involving nudity, sources said (read NY Post) You'll find this and other "Talk Bites" like it at RDN's sister site,
  • Busineswire: Premiere Radio Networks has agreed to a two-year network radio sales representation deal with Radio One, Inc. The new network, Premiere Urban One, will encompass Radio One stations, Clear Channel Urban stations, and Urban Contemporary formatted stations owned by other broadcasters. Premiere Urban One will be included for measurement in RADAR 80, which will be released in late March, 2004. Terms of the deal will not be disclosed
  • Read RDN: All Comedy Radio announced that network legend Tim Kelly has joined the media company as partner and senior advisor. Mr. Kelly was co-founder of Premiere Radio Network, a company he helped build into the nations largest radio syndication enterprise. He left Premiere in 2002 after 15 years with that company, serving as Executive VP, General Manager. He has also served as a programmer and radio personality at a number of major market stations, including KIIS-FM, Los Angeles, where he developed the early products that would be the genesis of Premiere
  • insideradio: More warning signs from younger radio listeners...Young-skewing demos' in-car listening is noticeably lower than the 12+ average, says a new Arbitron-Edison Research study. Full coverage of this year's Fly-In in tomorrow's Inside Radio.
  • insideradio: Rush Limbaugh feels more legal heat...Limbaugh told listeners this afternoon that Florida prosecutors today seized his medical records from the four doctors that treated him for back pain.
