Nationwide Radio Wires (10-18-2003)rronlineRIAA Sends Lawsuit Warnings... Execs from the label group told a Senate subcommittee earlier this month that they'd begin sending warning letters to individuals suspected of infringing through peer-to-peer networks before actually filing suit, and the first round of letters is on its way. The letters tell the addressees the RIAA has "substantial evidence" against them and say the notification is "in the event that you have an interest in resolving these claims through settlement." The first round of 261 suspected infringers received no such warnings, and the RIAA was widely criticized for naming a 12-year-old girl in one lawsuit (she later admitted to sharing more than 1,000 infringing songs) and for suing a woman who apparently didn't own a computer capable of running the KaZaa software she was accused of using to infringe.

Roger Hedgecock Flashfax (10-18-2003)GUESS ITÆS A STORY WEÆRE ALL INVOLVED IN... ROGERÆS RADIO PHONE lines wonÆt cool off from 3p - 6pàall of us have a comment to make about the grocery workers strike. ShouldnÆt be a surprise, we guess. We all shop. We all work and all of us seem to be comparing our work wage and benefit package against the grocery workers, and it appears that most of us come up wanting in the compensation department. HOW DARE THESE FOLKS who make a kingÆs ransom wage and get free meds go on strike. I think IÆm gonna apply. IÆm likely only at the bagger skill level, but IÆll go to night school to learn scanning. WE KNOW ONE PERSON WHO AINÆT GOING ON STRIKEàthat would be Julie Meier Wright who bosses folks around at the San Diego Economic Development Corp. We read in the Reader this week that she knocks down $515-thousand a year. Screw Vons, IÆm gonna check job openings at the EDC.**WEÆRE TRYING TO GET CLEARCHANNEL to buy into an idea whose time has come. Build me a house. Prices have gotten real high and I canÆt afford to live and work in San Diego County. So weÆre pitching the suit brigade here to make us homes. We put that note in the company suggestion box last week. No reply as yet. But itÆs only a matter of timeàthe school district up in Santa Clara has already built 40 one and two bedroom apartments on land the district owns. Gonna give (well rent cheap) the homes to teachers. San Diego Unified is looking at the idea. A school district as home developer. Clever no? Might get better if they can figure a way to turn the project into Shop Class. Get the big kids in Junior and Senior years to do the buildingàfree for the on the job training. WeÆre liking this idea more and more.
San Diego Radio Wires (10-18-2003)John Maffei - North County Times TV/SportsRatings show Mighty 1090 in a growth spurt... excerpts: When John Lynch launched The Mighty 1090 in March, his desire was "to be more than the little old sports station in San Diego." Now, seven months after the station launched, it has surpassed XTRA (690), the self-proclaimed giant in the industry, in the San Diego ratings.... Clear Channel's merging of XTRA 690 into 1150 has backfired in the ratings... In the seven months since its launch, The Mighty 1090 has stabilized its lineup by adding Ted Leitner and has secured the play-by-play for the Padres, San Diego State football and basketball as well as the NHL's Mighty Ducks....
Jay Posner - TV/Radio Sports - The San Diego Union Arbitron's summer ratings book was released this week, and for the first time XPRS-AM (The Mighty 1090) came out ahead of XTRA-AM (690), with an average rating of 0.9 to 0.7 for all listeners 12 and older. It must be somewhat disconcerting, however, that there was no growth from a year ago in the number of people listening to sports-talk radio. Add the two stations' numbers and you get 1.6 û the same rating XTRA had by itself last summer, when there was no Mighty 1090.
San Diego Radio Wires (10-18-2003)Reader BlurtShadoe Stevens filled in last month on a radio station in San Diego. He says it was his first DJ shift since 1979. Many know Shadoe as the announcer on Hollywood Squares. Or as the actor who played Kenny the landlord on Dave's World. Or as Fred Rated, the huckster character who smashed stereos in 1980s TV commercials. But before all that, Stevens deejayed and was program director at KMET and KRLA. Thirty years ago he became the first program director of KROQ-FM. After 24 years out of radio, in an era when DJs are being replaced by voice-tracked announcements, Stevens says he wants to get back into radio. He said his 3-year effort in webcasting (http://www.rhythmradio.com) has not panned out financially. Concerning the lack of independent radio stations in San Diego, Stevens said, "When you have consolidation, it means you have less competition. Competition spurs creativity. There are a lot of hollow stations [here]." -- Ken Leighton Random Access Radio Los Angeles 10-17-03!A weekly look at what's going on at the radio station websites.95.5 KLOS - can somebody please get rid of that loud splash page?!?!?! 102.7 KIIS - KIIS-FM Private Punk Rock Show w/ Good Charlotte... National Radio Wires (10-15-2003)Seal slams hip hop... Musician SEAL is sick to death with most urban music - because it's all so negative. The singer is frustrated the genre has become tied up with competition and the lust for money, instead of the beauty music should convey. He says, "I can't stand music that's always 'I am' and 'I'm this' and 'I've got that' and 'I'm better than you'. I loathe that kind of music. I find a lot of hip-hop boring because of that element to it. It can be so hateful. Everything and anyone you know is beautiful.' That's the lyrics to one of my songs."

Thanks Jason. Does anyone else have any fun stations on the Internet to note here? Sure beats the hell out of this urban r&b crap that passes as Top 40 here in San Diego. They're not playing the same crap all of the other stations are playing. In related news, Karen Kay, formerly of Q106 fame, is now working KDL in Santa Monica 103.1 where she's on 10am-3pm daily. from signonsandiego: Los Angeles Radio Wires 10-14-03!Gary Lycan - Orange County RegisterSTORY: (read Gary Lycan - OC Register) Listeners of KNX/1070 AM and KFWB/980 AM can expect to hear changes - some very subtle and some pretty obvious - in the months ahead in the wake of firings that claimed the general managers at both stations. George Nicholaw, who has run KNX since 1967, a year before the station switched to an all-news format, was dismissed. So was his counterpart at KFWB, Roger Nadel, who had been there since 1996 and had previously worked at KNX
