Dick’s Last Resort can thank 94/9 for a successful “Free on Fifth” event, which was held outside of Street Scene’s boundaries and packed people in to see bands like Rocket from the Crypt and Bad Credit. Though the brass at the station denies it, insiders say it was indeed a protest because Clear Channel had exclusive rights to Street Scene this year. While not big fans of the San Antonio Cartel and all for the not-as-corporate folks protesting, we do have to ask: If 94/9 were offered an exclusive deal with Street Scene, would they have taken it? You bet yer sweet ass. Our suggestion: Next year 94/9 should team with other independent stations—92/1, KPRI, etc.—and offer a cross-promotional deal to Street Scene that approximates what behemoth Clear Channel can bring to the table.
