David Tanny Runs For California Governor 7-26-03Platform: to outlaw sleepy and boring radio stations. Raise the minimum wave to the level of the prevailing wage, about $27 an hour. Pass a law that requires every male between 21 and 65 to watch Striperella on TNN Thursdays at 11pm. Require fast food outlets to raise the cost of burgers to $3.99 and lower the cost of 16 ounce salads to 99 cents! Require Cox and Time Warner cable to replace the shopping channels with low-power English-language TV stations. Force SDG&E to lower the cost of electricity to 2 cents a megawatt! Outlaw canned radio programming unless the jocks have names such as Bob, Billy, John Boy, Tom, and Demento.Anyone interested in funding my campaign? Only need $3,500 and 65 signatures to put me on the ballot! Thanks to some rich guy who wants to be the next governor of California who shall remain nameless, paying money for a signature, it looks like political anarchy come October 7th. If that's all it takes to unseat the current governor, then the recall process needs a serious revaluation. We know Governor "Dufus" has screwed up the California budget well, thanks to his mishandling of the 2000-01 electricity crisis, also blamed on the greedy electricity utility companies and natural gas companies. We know "Dufus" waited a week after last year's gubernatoral election passed until he revealed the budget crisis. What a hack he is! But the process of recalling the governor is the wrong way of doing it. Who knows what we'll end up as candidates? A bunch of inexperienced no-namers who never held public office? What makes them qualified to take on the state? Something about the recall process needs to be changed, but using your millions to literally bankroll a recall petition to pay people to sign a ballot is in poor taste. As Kyle would say to Stan in "South Park": Dude, this is f--ked up, right here!
San Diego Radio Wires 7-26-03!John Maffei - North County Times TV/SportsChargers camp coverage is a real chore for local media The Chargers have moved their training camp from UC San Diego more than 100 miles up Interstate 5, through crushing traffic, and across the 405 to Carson. The move was made to get away from the distractions of home and to help the Chargers bond as a team. And it very well may ---- that's a question only time can answer. What is known for sure, however, is the move has created a hardship for the San Diego media covering the team. Read more about it in John's column. Footnote: Cal Radio News will not be covering the Chargers training camp. Signs of the times (also from Maffei): Days after it was announced KOGO Radio (600) had lost the Padres to The Mighty 1090 starting in 2004, KOGO hung a sign in Qualcomm Stadium. But it was an old an embarrassing sign, proclaiming KOGO as "The New Home of the Padres." Two days later, there was a black strip across the top of the sign, which was finally replaced by KOGO's signature "The Big One."
Jay Posner - TV/Radio Sports - The San Diego Union Driving north on Highway 101 last week near Santa Maria, I was able to pick up The Mighty 1090 on the car radio. But regardless of whether I tuned in 690 or 1150, XTRA sounded rather faint. Maybe the wrong station is using the slogan, "From Baja to the Canadian Rockies." XTRA's more like "Baja to Buellton."

Two SD Stations Streaming 7-25-03Just this week, KPRI 102.1 and FRSD 96.9 recently began streaming their signals on the web. The KPRI website is at the top of this page. Check out the FRSD Pirate 96.9 website for the stream http://www.pirate969.org/.KPRI's streaming is powered by live365.com, which streams many commercial broadcasters through its website. DFSX Comedy and Fun Radio is hosted on live365.com. FRSD's extensive playlist is found at their website, which lists many band and song names I can't mention here. Most of which are songs that have gotten airplay only on college radio or overnights on 91X, songs from the peak days of punk, and many other kinds of songs that just never got any airplay or publicity at all. 96.9's signal has been received as far north as Santee, though a Mexican station from Mexicali to the east sometimes interferes with FRSD in the valley.
San Diego Radio Wires 7-24-03!North County Times - Randy Dotinga(note NEW URL) From 91X song-picker to home seller... Chris Muckley is now on the other side of the business of selling. The hordes of insistent record promoters have vanished from his life, replaced by another potentially pesky breed ---- looky-loos. Yep, the music director at 91X has become, of all things, a real estate agent. While critics rap 91X as a pawn of its corporate owners, Muckley said he actually had plenty of freedom as music director. "I got to pick a lot of songs that people wouldn't otherwise get to hear," he said. "I actively pursued imports and local music. It was my job to go out and find music instead of just what was brought to me." Muckley's departure from 91X ---- he quit in June ---- comes at a time when the station is facing perhaps its most significant competition ever. Mike Halloran, a fixture in alternative rock circles and an eternal nemesis of 91X, recently helped create FM 94/9. The station is doing well in the ratings and runs promos bragging about its respect for music and independence from corporate influence, both clear jabs at the chattier 91X. San Diego Radio Wires 7-23-03!Clear Channel in San Diego is rumored to be helping Salem-owned KCBQ 1170 stay on the airwaves by "allowing that station's antenna to be relocated to Clear Channel's tower for KPOP(AM)."Los Angeles Radio Wires 7-21-03!Daily Breeze - Richard WagonerTip from L.A. Talk Radio And it appears that KBRT (740 AM) isnÆt a daytime-only station after all. At least it doesnÆt have to be. According to K.M. Richards, referring to the FCC database, KBRT is authorized for 10,000 watts during the day and 113 watts at night . . . enough to cover Catalina Island ù where its transmitter is located, but not enough to break through San FranciscoÆs KCBS, which blankets most of California, including Los Angeles, at night. After trying night broadcasts for a time, KBRT gave them up, even though they are still authorized to have them. |
