San Diego Radio Wires 6-14-03

Note to some obscure radio websites: send in your radio news and links or they won't be mentioned. Cal Radio News can't use what is not known to exist.

The Mighty 1090 has almost landed the Aztecs broadcasts; the deal is in principle only, but other radio bidders have until Tuesday to contest the agreement to a contract. The SDSU agreement is for three years with an option for two more. And it goes much deeper than football and basketball. There is the possibility a handful of baseball games will be carried, and there is an agreement for football and basketball coaches' shows, as well as an athletic director's show and a show featuring the school's Olympic sports.

Also: still no word on who gets the Padres broadcasts: still either KOGO or 1090! The question is: do the listeners care for the Padre radiocasts anymore?

And: Dan Rowe, voice of the Minnesota Vikings from 1991-2000, agreed to a two-year contract with KFMB to do Chargers radio play-by-play. Rowe, 53, will become only the third play-by-play broadcaster since 1984, following Ted Leitner (1985-86, 1998-2002) and Lee Hamilton (1987-97). Ironically, Rowe was replaced by Hamilton (albeit briefly) when the Vikings switched stations in 2001.

Also: still no word on nctimes.com updating to the latest Randy Dotinga radio column. Since it costs me $4.00 to drive to North County, just going for the paper doesn't make any econonic sense.

Radio Wires 6-13-03!

OK. We got some of our bugs fixed. Sorry for the infrequent updates.

File this under the "what the @#%^% took them so long to report this news department"... San Diego radio veteran Jim McInnes is back on the air. He can be heard from 6 p.m. to midnight Sundays on KPLN/FM 103.7 "The Planet." In October, McInnes was fired from KGB/FM 101.5 "Rock 105" after 28 years. Clear Channel said the outlet was "evolving." He was replaced by Mojo Nixon. McInnes made his Planet debut May 25. A spokeswoman for the Infinity Broadcasting station said McInnes also will be heard filling in for vacationing station regulars. Since few others know classic rock better than McInnes, he's expected to thrive at KPLN, which is live 24/7 and doesn't use computer automation or "voicetracking" like many Clear Channel stations do. During his hiatus, McInnes wrote local newspaper columns, discovered painting, and performed with his band Modern Rhythm Band. He's collecting requests for "The Vinyl Resting Place" (the name of his show in which he plays albums listeners haven't heard for some time) at his e-mail address jimmcinnes@cox.net.

Thursday's Blurt...nothing radio wise this week.

Thursday's Randy Dotinga column...not on the nctimes.com website! The webmaster is lazy again.

Can't these fair-weathered radio columnists get anything in a timely manner?
