Spring 2003 Ratings Period 2

The May survey had some surprises in listening habits. With the rise of XM Radio as an alternative, I am seriously considering adding XM Radio to the list of channels you can rate, but since there are well over 100 channels, I'll let the readers simply vote for "Any XM Radio Channel" in exact quotes, meaning, that you select that vote if you listened to any one or a combination of XM channels, period, for any length of time.

San Diego radio in the mornings shows Tony and Kris at the #1 position, but internet listeners who can get Bob and Tom on the Internet rated that show #2.

We recently discovered with the help of a secret agent that several people who work at a certain radio conglomerate were stuffing the ballot with their employer's stations, including illegal write-in votes for stations such as KGB and Bob that are no longer being rated. Sorry for the long delay, but to make a long story short, we are removing the listings for all San Diego Clear Channel radio stations from the Evalutrons ballot, and disqualifying the May ratings, replacing them with negative opposites of their April ratings. With the negative reception the locals are showing towards CCSD, it's no surprise that Clear Channel does not stand for San Diego; they stand for the almighty buck.

We will also discuss in private whether to requalify the CCSD radio stations for future ballot consideration.

It's just as well, since even with the overinflated numbers for Padres Baseball on KOGO the ratings have tanked for the broadcasts. Stations such as channel 933 and Z90 have disapearred off the radar when the disqualifying votes were removed, so, effective June 2003, though they're still on the ballot on another website, votes for any Clear Channel San Diego radio station (except XTRA 690, which is essentially a Los Angeles radio station), will not count towards the averages. You can still vote for Clear Channel radio stations in other areas such as KIIS or KFI.

The most popular daypart, Mornings, had Jeff and Jer on Star 100.7 leading the pack. Middays had KYXY 96.5 at the pole position, but The Planet 103.7 lead in the noontime hour. Afternoon drives led with KIFM 98.1's smooth jazz, and based on the big headache of dealing with these stupid gits from CC, I could use some smooth jazz to sooth the savage beast.

Evenings saw the rise of XM Radio, though still unrated as of this quarter, as people are indicating that they're listening to several channels, most of which, knock the socks off of anything CCSD programs. Clear Channel just can't do radio right.

The following stations were nominated by petition on another website, and last month for May 2003, I asked the readers if they wished to vote for KROQ 106.7. Only two out of 233 members cared to vote for the addition.

  • . ( B ) KROQ 106.7, Los Angeles - alternative rock. (not added, 117 yes votes needed to add)

The following stations are eligible for being rated beginning in July 2003:

  • . ( I ) XRM Radio - Listen to the dance and electronica hits! Winamp required.

The following stations are eligible for being rated beginning in May 2003:

  • . ( I ) GrooveRadio.com - veteran underground dance station just returned to streaming in May 2003.
  • . ( I ) WorldTalkRadio.com, San Diego - talk programming.
  • . ( I ) SDTalk, San Diego - talk programming

With these changes, here's how the ballot stacked up for the month of May 2003.

Registered voters have been sending in what stations they listened to each day via e-mail and registration number, and as for Arbitron, their idea of restrictive voting is outdated and useless for today's music listening base.

Note: the ranks are for May and not for the combined averages.
