KIIS/Los Angeles Vet Bruce Vidal Dies Vidal, who spent 14 years at KIIS-FM, died early this morning, apparently of a heart attack; he had been suffering recently from diabetes-related health problems. Colleagues estimate that he was approximately 55 years old at the time of his death. Vidal, who came to KIIS from KIOI/San Francisco, began his career in Minnesota and later worked in St. Louis and Riverside. At various points during his tenure at KIIS, Vidal hosted all the station's airshifts except for mornings, but filled in on occasion for longtime morning personality Rick Dees. He received national press attention in the mid-'80s for his on-air rivalry with then-wife Laurie Allen, who was on the air at crosstown competitor KMGG at the same time Vidal was on KIIS.

The KXTA (1150) Web site says to look for the new merged superstation with XTRA (690) on Monday. However, employees at the stations haven't been told much, and some assume they'll be working through the end of the year. Trying to get a comment from management at either station is beyond impossible, this despite the fact they're in the communications business.

Ian Eagle and Solomon Wilcotts will call Sunday's 10 a.m. Chargers-Bills game for CBS.

ESPN will carry the 68th Heisman Trophy Presentation live at 4 p.m. Saturday. Chris Fowler is the host. Fox Sports Net has dispatched Petros Papdakis and Carolyn Hughes to New York for the Heisman presentation. They'll have reports at 10 tonight and Saturday on the Southern California Sports Report.

The first of 28 college football bowl games kicks off Tuesday when North Texas and Cincinnati meet in the New Orleans Bowl.

Until last night it was right there, live and in color at www.foxsports1150.com: "Super Station launches Dec. 16"! Just below were the logos from XTRA Sports 690 AM and Fox Sports AM 1150, plus these words: "From Ventura to Baja - over 100,000 watts of power"! Already, I sense trouble. As we are reminded every weekday from 4 to 8 p.m., XTRA 690 booms from Baja to the Canadian Rockies. Now they're telling us that with an additional 23,000 watts, the "superstation" will reach only to Ventura?

The memo also said the new lineup will be Tony Bruno from 5 to 9 a.m., Jim Rome from 9 to noon (finally live again in San Diego), Steve Hartman and Bill Werndl (or "Wurndell," as it read on the memo) from noon to 3 p.m. and Lee Hamilton from 3 to 7 p.m. Everything else is "to be determined," although look for plenty of Fox Sports Radio programming in the late-night and overnight periods.

ABC's argument for a flexible "Monday Night Football" schedule received a boost this week with that horrible Dolphins-Bears game. Good matchups are due the next two Mondays (Patriots-Titans, Steelers-Bucs) before it gets ugly on the final night with a 49ers-Rams stinker. ESPN's "Sunday Night Football" also could argue the case. It has Cardinals-Rams this week and Bucs-Bears on the final Sunday. But any flexibility in the prime-time schedule almost certainly won't happen until 2006.

Stacy Taylor is filling in for Roger Hedgecock at KOGO this week. Filling in for Stacy at 6 p.m. is Sully and Scooter, the two misfits of talk radio. They are normally heard on the weekend afternoons at KOGO. (For Temecula listeners, remember that KOGO-FM in Temecula is no more, so you'll need to tune it only on AM 600 if you can get by with interference from AM 590 in San Bernadino nearby.)

The station at 570 AM will change to adult standards at noon today following Michael Jackson's talk show. This Michael is the talented one, not the no-nosed one ... The new 570 AM will kick it off with non-stop Frank Sinatra music at noon.

Dr. Dog has both bark and bite... Sometimes, talk radio sounds like a zoo. Turn to almost any AM station and you'll hear snakes, weasels, foxes and a few dodo birds who should have gone extinct years ago. But only one local show is actually about our four-legged friends. Read about it in the December 12th edition online. If you live in the North County area, buy the paper and give the newspaper a reason to exist as an alternative to the Useless-Buffoon here.

Quickies: If all that schmaltzy holiday music on Kool 95.7 is driving you up your Christmas tree, alternative/classic rock station KPRI (formerly known as Sets 102.1) is offering an alternative on its Web site, authenticrock.com. Tune in to hear an all-Christmas-music "station" featuring tracks by hip rock artists.

... The Temecula region, the land of yuppies just north of us, now has a new format on an old frequency. The Clear Channel company has dumped 94.5 FM's simulcast of San Diego talk station KOGO and replaced it with a simulcast of "My 94.1," the female-oriented local light-rock station.

Ah, those lucky Temeculans. They'll get to hear morning show hosts "Jagger & Kristi," the artificially sweetened married disc jockey team that used to be at Star 100.7 ...

North County Times - Ann Zivotsky
While Telemundo and Univision battle for Spanish-speaking viewers, a new weekly program, "Urban Latino," is aiming for young, English-speaking Latinos. Both an entertainment and public information show, "Urban Latino" (12:30 a.m. Fridays, XETV/Channel 6 and 11:30 p.m. Saturdays XUPN/Channel 13, which is Channel 49 if you're in Tecate) is gaining viewers.

On November 19, Clear Channel San Diego fired 34 staffers, including afternoon DJ Benny Martinez, who was heard on oldies station KOOL 95.7. This means that there are two local Clear Channel stations with only one live-and-local DJ. KOOL 95.7 is only live and local in the morning with Dave Mason, and afternoon DJ Mike O'Brian is the only live-and-local DJ on country station Bob 99.3. The rest of the day, both stations rely on voice-tracked DJ feeds from air talent based in other cities. -- Ken Leighton

"P.O.D. did not get played on local radio until after they were signed to Atlantic, and 91X was one of the last stations in the nation to add them to their playlist," says a local insider who would know. Read more at the website!

# "Re: www.570klac.com. With the exception of a few board ops who are being let go, most all the staff has already exited. Unlike other L.A. Clear Channel stations, there will be no board ops on Fabulous 570, it will simply be on prophet except morning drive. Last I heard on Monday, management had agreed to the money that Paul Freeman was seeking for the morning show gig. But I haven't heard an official word if he got the gig." From sc groove bb at

LIQUID AUDIO FINALLY BITES THE DUST..board votes to dissolve company... (December 9, 2002 12:51pm) The board of Liquid Audio voted Friday to dissolve the company. The Redwood City, California company had stayed much longer than other sound format software companies under the massive success of Real Audio, Windows Media and mp3. The board had opposed a $100 million dollar merger plan in November and a takeover from investor Steel Partners II before that. Unlike other "dot.com" companies the stockholders will not be totally left holding the bag. The board also approved a $2.50 per share dividend on Friday. Liquid Audio will continue to operate until it has disposed of its assets.
