Fall 2002 Ratings Period 2!November 2002's ratings weeks stunts and a format change at 94.9 apparently meant nothing to the participants in our Evalutron radio station survey.Period 2, which covers all of November (we don't go by weeks, but months), have revealed that not much has changed since Period 1 of this Fall season. B94.9's new alternative rock format among the Evalutron readers didn't make a dent in their listening habits. A few comments from the readers: "Cookie cutter? Right! So is the new 94.9. Same junk rock recipe. No thanks!"; "94.9 is not run by Clear Channel, but J-P is also a corporate radio company that has foisted its own idea of alternative rock on the public, which sounds more like 91X than the old Flash or Premium did. I'm not fooled. 91X has more variety than 94.9. I'm sticking with the X"; "I'm dissappointed at 94.9's 'new' direction in programming. They're using their unlistenable rock format to trash Clear Channel instead of programming something original that's not being served locally such as adult lounge or adult dance music?"; "I hope Halloran falls flat with his idea of modern rock that plays the same songs as often as 91X does, except that 91X doesn't play that novelty fiddle tune whatever that's called."; "94.9 should go back to KBEST oldies, as they once did a better job doing oldies than that 94.1 or 95.7 ever did, but 94.9 should do an oldies format more like KCBQ 1170's way than the cold way CC is doing their 95.7"; "I don't like the new format at 94.9. I don't listen to 91X either for the same reason. I prefer real rock and roll like that from Sets (KPRI) 102.1 and KGB-FM"; "New format. Same songs. Not better. Try again, Mike and add some songs that are more like what the old 91X would sound like in the 80's except with new songs"; "The most popular format in San Diego is alternative music, but we have enough stations serving that genre here. Why is 94.9 duplicating the same songs I can already hear on 91X and 92.1? What about asking what format we can use here? I want an easy listening station without the Madonna and Britney fluff that's on KYXY with real songs, plus a mixture of real jazz and swing, and some classical-like excerpts for good measure"; "94.9 would do a better job if they put Radio Dismal on and reprogram 1240AM into a 24-hour news station, which is what San Diego really needs." Registered voters have been sending in what stations they listened to each day via e-mail and registration number, and as for Arbitron, their idea of restrictive voting is outdated and useless for today's music listening base. In a Worst-To-First ratings poll, DFSXmas, which was an 80's station in October, flipped to All Christmas Comedy music and zoomed to #1 in the period two rankings. DFSX, which had an all-Halloween format for the last two weeks, slipped back to its normal rank. The new Christmas 95.7, playing relaxing holiday music, hasn't made a dent in the habits of San Diegans as they're listening to better ideas of Christmas formats on live365.com Anyway, the Fall 2002 Period 2 Ratings for the San Diego listeners only rate the following stations they have been hearing. We combined the new and old ratings system back to a single ratings system as follows:
Stations below the 1.0 rating: KOGO, XTRA, ESPN 800, KSDO, Radio Disney, KPOP, 91X, Channel, My, B, KOOL, Bob, KGB, KIOZ, Planet. Top Morning Shows: 1. John Boy & Billy, 2.
